EM 505: FOUNDATIONS OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT
Today the greater Birmingham area has been issued a weather service announcement notice stating that a sever flood is approaching the area. Birmingham is considered one of the most popular areas in Alabama we should assume that there is high traffic in the area. Also, exits routes should be set up in the event of departure. The News may also inform the citizens to have an evacuation route first aid kit and the necessary supplies to survive for at least three day away from home. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to show that I have clear understanding of how to properly respond in a disaster. Also, for the purpose of this paper the citizens must be informed of a plan that will hopeful lead them to a safe risk management plan. The point is to eliminate the potential risk factor in

Also the ability to find temporary shelter is one of the responsibilities I have to take under consideration when planning and organizing the evacuation process after a disaster. The American Red Cross, the organization has shelters set up across the emergency route as and they have the resources to accommodate all persons looking for safe and sufficient refuge they also make available food and medication to families that have evacuated from the flood. Lastly, returning home will be very difficult because there is a chance that once we return home environment will be the same therefore keeping my family safe in all aspects not just the evacuation stage but the all stages to keep my family protected and out of risk. Keeping my family out of harm’s way will be proven to be a good idea when it comes to rebuilding the community because families are considered “as a main component of the whole community”(NRF
Tragic events that cause damage to property and life may destroy the social, cultural and economic life of a community. Communities must be engaged in the various phases from prevention to recovery to build disaster resilient communities. In order to do this, there must be a disaster preparedness plan in place that involves multiple people in various roles.
We have come to a time where it is imperative to reset our courses associated with the safety of the employees, the safety of the brand and the longevity of the company alongside their competitive edge. As senior manager, consideration should not be limited to solely short-run solutions. It is primary for the company’s decision makers of all tiers manage the negative and positive potential of any crisis as time can carry the possibilities of unknown limits. Accommodations must be made for the entire community (Senior Management, Ergonomists, Labor Leaders, Politicians of the city, Service Staff, Human Resources and Line Management) under the company’s payroll that has been affected by this natural disaster using our revised Crisis Management Portfolio.
The resources most in demand for the vulnerable populations after a storm in Houston: electricity, food, water, information, and housing. Also, citizens
Natural disaster threats accompany people practically everywhere and often people are unaware of the fact that one day the disaster may strike and change their life drastically, such as the ones that can occur in Huskietown. In such a situation, it is important to get prepared for potential disasters and know how to act and behave in different situations. To make it clearer, it is necessary to have a clear plan of action in case of a disaster and, what is not less important, it is necessary to clearly understand what real natural disasters can really occur in the given area. In such a way, it is obvious that in order to come prepared to a disaster it is necessary to know as much information about the disaster itself, its effects
When disasters occur suddenly, the following days makes it difficult for people to get to work due to fallen trees or destroyed cars and home or roads flooded. By evaluating a given area or even country, can reduce these negative impacts by using risk identification, risk reduction and risk transfer. This is the important job of risk manager to do these risk assessments in order to better prepare for unfortunate events that will occur sometime in the future. There are public assistance programs set in place in the event of a disaster destroying a town or city for example.
The differing needs of a vulnerable population have to be addressed in order to alleviate issues that were noted after Katrina. In particular, the needs which are known prior to a disaster, such as evacuation for the infirmed, elderly, impoverished, and those who lack the means to evacuate. The Department of Homeland Security represented a solution to addressing these needs via a three phase response: “pre-event planning and preparation, the event, and recovery” (Dept. Homeland Security, 2008). It has been widely studied that residents of a vulnerable community may be impacted more severely and are disproportionately affected than those with means following a disaster. Assessing how to prepare for each of the phases represents an issue for emergency managers especially when it comes to those who lack the means to prepare for themselves. Quickly rebuilding homes in a devastated area won’t help a community when a disaster strikes again. Platt stated that “disasters offer a window of opportunity to strengthen communities”, via “construction and change land uses to prevent a recurrence of a disaster”. (Platt, 1998) It also can be argued that following a disastrous event, this is when a true opportunity arises, by providing an opportunity to work through solving the societal issues that are the basis for a vulnerable populous via comprehensive political reforms and
The Community of South Amboy appears to be supported of future mitigation efforts, in order to reduce flooding in the area; however, they don’t know who to contact in order to assist with the mitigation efforts The community of South Amboy could benefit from reducing the floods in the area, because insurance premiums will decrease, business and job opportunities will increase in the city of South Amboy. The lack of knowledge an organization could be a major roadblock for the community of South Amboy; however, the city’s emergency manager can assist in educating and organizing the community in order to create and implement mitigation plans in the
Communication is also very critical in the case of a catastrophic event. Thus, the first respondent need to be a good communicator for communication is an essential part in response to a catastrophic event (Pope, 2005). It is also the responsibility of the first respondent to have a practical plan to implement in case an emergency erupted following the catastrophic event. The aftermath of a catastrophic event is highly unpredictable and emergencies cannot be overlooked. It is, therefore, the
Nobody knows when floods happen. These are natural disasters that can just strike when we least expect it. We may live in deserts or atop a mountain and still experience flooding.
Communication is widely regarded as one of the most essential elements in successfully managing an emergency situation. The dissemination of information, which is both timely as well as accurate, to the parties concerned goes a long way to lend a hand in ensuring that the recovery activities in an emergency situation, together with its management takes place effectively. For that reason, five critical assumptions are used to provide the basis of disaster management strategy.
Basements are an essential part of homes in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They get turned into recreational rooms for the grandchildren, small apartments for graduate students, and even storage spaces. So when one of them floods, it is a very discouraging and expensive mess that no one looks forward to. Because of this, it helps to know a few things about basement flooding that can help prevent some of the damage from occurring.
Risk for disasters is a part of life; emergency situations occur more frequently than many people believe. A wise person plans for the worse, and hopes for the best. After a disaster, how well a community can recover will depend largely on how well they prepared in advance. Risk management includes identifying any potential risks to a community and proactively planning to minimize the threat. Proactive organization of resources and people to respond to emergencies can mean the difference between a community’s ability to regroup and recover, and the loss of life. To better
The effective contingency plan should only include the high-priority items and it should be as simple as possible. The purpose for the contingency plans is to response quickly when there are changes of an organization’s current strategy. For example, the predefined strategy is based on some assumptions about the economy but the outcome is not what the organization assumed, the contingency plan can support the organization to react promptly. The effective contingency planning includes a seven step process. First, Identify both beneficial and unfavorable events that could possibly derail the strategy. This step includes the development of the formal contingency planning policy statement in order to provide it to relevant stakeholders the authority and guideline that required developing the effective contingency plan. Policy will be published when executive confirms it. To gather the high-level business requirements, define scope and allocating project resources. Second, Specify trigger points and calculate about when contingent events are likely to occur. It involves the Business Impact Analysis (BIA) to identify threat scenarios, prioritize key business processes and critical systems for business continuity. Executive approval on those choices of the critical business functions and the priority to recover during the disaster. Third, Assess the
This subject aims to teach students the main elements of emergency management for natural disasters and to a lesser degree terrorist attack. Students will understand the principles involved in emergency
Over the past few decades, the significance, magnitude and consequence of risk management and communication have been brought before the world over and over again in a number of situations related to health, terrorist activities, natural disasters etc. When one turns the pages of history, it is rather obvious that lack of planning and absence of resources due to unpreparedness makes it difficult for the concerned authorities to manage an emergency or epidemic a problematic and traumatic task. The chaotic situations can turn out to be more nerve-racking and tense when preparations are not made before hand (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services 2002).
