Stachybotrys Chartarum or more commonly known as Black Mold is by definition a possibly toxic mold that can produce toxins called mycotoxins. Mycotoxins are produced by specific strains of mold which when found in food can cause foodborne illness, which in some cases may become fatal. There are varying mycotoxins found within fungi but this is one of the deadlier mycotoxins versus other mycotoxins, trichothecene. Despite the fact that many people do have mold allergies, this isn’t an allergic it is a reaction to trichothecene that is brought into your body by an outside source, breaking cells down. The purpose of this essay to talk about why black mold is such a serious issue, especially in food service and how it may be prevented.
Black mold like other funguses reproduce at a faster rate in damp, humid places. The ideal environment is a moist, dark area void of sunlight with a humidity level of fifty percent. (CDC) Most people would like think that water

First, you start with the basics, cleaning of the equipment and food service area. Especially, anywhere water may be allowed to sit. This means properly cleaning your sink area, the floors and walls surrounding the sink area, all gaskets in fridges and freezers, as well as the insides of them. This will prevent spores from being allowed to multiplied and preventing moisture from building up in those areas creating Stachybotrys chartarum ideal environment. If you discover that there is Black Mold you must report the discovery to a supervisor. The supervisor will then need to remove anybody within the building and have it removed immediately. Black mold isn’t something minor. Every day it sits there you risk exposing more people to deadly mycotoxins within your establishment. We all know what happens if you have a food borne illness or even a business that is causing people to becoming
The aforementioned case studies demonstrate the hidden and potential deadly effects of mold exposure. In Dripping Springs, Texas, a vibrant man (Ron) became essentially handicapped from exposure and inhalation of the deadly mycotoxins in the mold spores. In Cleveland, Ohio, toxic mold is responsible for the hospitalization of thirty infants and claimed the lives of four children. Mold is a serious public health concern that must be addressed through public education. Personnel must recognize and identify the potential signs and symptoms of toxic mold. For example, Stachybotrys (black mold) is a dark green almost black slimy mold that causes severe health problems, such as; respiratory issues, pulmonary hemosiderosis, asthma attacks, and memory
The black death first appeared in the Middle East and Europe in 1348. The black death swept through Asia and continued west and northwest through North Africa, Europe and the Middle East (Document 1). The black death was transmitted via fleas living in the fur of the black rat. The black death actually refers to the bubonic, pneumonic and septicemic plagues. The most common of these three strains was bubonic. Some symptoms
It is crucial that you form a plan to get rid of the black mold problem that you have in your home as soon as you can. Before you do anything it is first a smart move to get a hold of the necessary safety equipment. A pair of gloves, safety goggles, a respiratory mask, and some kind of outer protection for your body are the necessary pieces of gear that you are going to need if you don't want to be adversely affected by both the mold spores, and the cleaning agents you will be using.
For decades, experts have investigate the role of mycotoxins and how they related to people suffering negative health effects after occupying a water-damaged building. In 1966, the early years of this investigation, Harriet Burge, a renowned industry leader in fungal contamination, gave a risk assessment to review the indoor contaminations of mold. What did they incorporate?
Summary: The Black Death, by Philip Ziegler, covers the epidemic that spread throughout Eurasia around 1348. The book mostly focuses on England and how the disease affected this area. The book also covers other portions of Europe such as France, Italy, and Germany but not as in depth. Ziegler uses the research of many historians to piece together what occurred during this time of grief. Ziegler starts off the book explaining the origins and nature of the plague. He explains how the tartar attacked the port city of Genoa by catapulting diseased corpses in the city’s compound. The Genoese decided to flee and went further north, which caused the spread of
The Black Plague which was also known as The Black Death, first originated in Asia and spread across to the shores of Italy during October 1346. It is believed that the Black Death arrived in Europe with trading ships that arrived at the Sicilian port of Messina. Most of the people on board these ships were already dead, with others terribly ill. Many sailors had black boils on their body that were full of pus and blood. By the time the sickness was discovered by the authorities it was already too late because the disease had started to spread rapidly all around Europe.
The Black Plague, also known as the Black Death, started in southern Europe around 1348. Within three years, the Plague swept throughout Europe, killing many people. The main bullet that public officials had to shoot at the Plague was isolation, the complete separation from others. An infected person was isolated for a period of fourteen days, although the quarantine time was gradually increased to forty days. Disturbed by the effect that the Black Plague had, public officials created a sanitary system to battle contagious diseases. They used observation stations, isolation hospitals, and disinfection procedures. Pure water supplies, garbage and sewage disposal, and food inspections were started to improve sanitation. These efforts were especially
In “The Black Death” the author Phillip Ziegler attempts to fully describe the Plague that struck Europe in 1338 and remained until 1665. The year of the great Plague of London Ziegler tries to give an unbiased account of the Plague by compiling information from contradictory sources. Ziegler begins the book with the Tartans catapulting diseased corpses into Genoese as the Genoese escape back to Europe. Following this, the author provides some insight into the Plague in Italy, Germany, and France, in which he highlights the persecution of Jews, who became the scapegoat for the Plague in Germany. The majority of the book discusses the Plague in England, dealing with the people that died.
The Black Plague: The Disease that Changed Millions of Lives In 1348, a horrifying illness swept through Europe, leaving corpses in its wake. This disease lasted till 1351, meaning three years of suffering and agony. “The Black Death” is a pretty historically accurate movie. The costumes in the movie, the plot of the movie, the cause of the Black Death, how the Black Death spread, how to cure the Black Death, what the Black Death looked like, some of the sets in the movie, and the origin of the Black Death were all depicted extremely accurately. However, some of the sets in “The Black Death” were not completely accurate. The movie “The Black Death” gives the viewer a great deal of accurate information about the Black Plague; however, there are a few historical inaccuracies as well.
The Black Plague was caused by the yersinia pestis found in rodents. The origins of the plague can be traced back to the Gobi Desert in Mongolia around the 1320’s. Soon after the plague struck China, India Persia,
The subject of black mold gathered a lot of attention in the late 1990’s. Up to that time, little attention had been given to this topic and there were few government regulations regarding black mold.
Many of the people in the movie believed that the Black Death originated in France. Nevertheless, this was incorrect. Many of the people in Europe had heard of the “Great Pestilence” that was sweeping through the continent, even before it arrived in Europe (Black Death). The Black Death actually originated in China.” The plague first arrived in Europe in 1347 and came from the steppes area of Central Asia” (Bubonic Plague). The plague had been in Central China for a while before it began to spread elsewhere, but since Mongolians tend to live so close to their horses, the infected fleas did not even bother them (Bubonic Plague). However, eventually trading posts became spaces that had a ton of rats, and these rats brought the fleas that carried the disease with them, which is what caused the plague to spread all throughout Europe (Black Death). The movie did not necessarily get the origin of the Black Death wrong as people in England had only heard that there was a great pestilence sweeping the continent until it arrived in England. The people in England did not know where the
The Black Death took place in Europe during the fourteenth century. To the people of the time, facts about the disease were unknown until people started to notice problems that other people were having. The Black Death or “plague” that killed thousands in the fourteenth century may have evolved into a more modern version of itself.
The information gathered in this experiment may be relevant to those individuals who contend with food borne molds at home, or professionally. Because the rate of mold growth can vary depending
