The bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) is a very popular bird with deep roots in outdoor culture. This bird has been on a long term population decline documented as starting in the 1980s (Perkins et al. 2014). With its popularity bobwhite quail have become the forerunner in promoting habitat management and conservation. This is not only because of its fame as a game species but by the financial impact this bird has on state and local economies. Promoting this very specific habitat management regime is categorized as “umbrella management” due to the fact that bobwhite conservation effects all species that inhabit the same habitat. One of the non-game animals believed to be benefiting from this “umbrella” is the Texas Horned Lizard (Phrynosoma
The plants do not need the oxygen, so it is expelled into the air. Other organisms inhale the oxygen by various methods, and they exhale carbon dioxide for the plant to use to create oxygen. Some oxygen is in the water and is consumed by organisms.
The bald eagle—a symbol of America. But what is it and where did it come from? The bald eagle has been the official bird of America since 1782 when it was chosen due to its majestic beauty, great strength, long life, and because it being native to North America.
Columbian White-tailed deer are distinguishable because they have a long black tail on the outside, and the male's antlers point all rise from the one main beam. The Columbian white-tail is one of the large subspecies with "antlers narrowly spreading and curving steeply upward” Columbian white-tailed deer's diets consist of young willow, cottonwood, alder and other deciduous trees in riverbanks and the surrounding area. This is where they can usually be found. Male Columbian white-tailed deer are bigger than females, they have large antlers and they shed them every winter and regrow them in spring. Both sexes have a white underneath their tail which is why they got the name.
Mason Neck Park and Mason Neck Wildlife Refuge, officially known as Mason Neck State Park and Elizabeth Hartwell Mason Neck respectively, are home to a multitude of species, such as the bald eagle, the Virginia pine tree, and the white-tailed deer (“Elizabeth Hartwell Mason Neck,” 2016; “Mason Neck State Park,” 2016). Critical to the conservation of endangered species, Mason Neck Wildlife Refuge, run by the National Wildlife Refuge System, a part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, provides a safe habitat for the various organisms (“Elizabeth Hartwell Mason Neck,” 2016). On the other hand, the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, the governmental agency responsible for Mason Neck Park, keeps human’s recreational needs in mind and provides activities such as canoeing and fishing (“Mason Neck State Park,” 2016). The human interference present within the Mason Neck Park may impact the local ecosystem (“Mason Neck State Park,” 2016). Although there are activities available in Mason Neck Wildlife Refuge, they are “wildlife-oriented recreational developments” meaning the well being of organisms living in the Refuge will be the first priority (“Elizabeth Hartwell Mason
Have you seen the Brevard white squirrels? There famous in Brevard because they are spotted rarely anywhere else. On September 30th three baby white squirrels were spotted on campus and carried to safety.
Greater Scaup (Aythya marila) and Lesser Scaup (Aythya affinis) populations have been steadily declining in the last decade. This has raised concerns among wildlife biologists as to what is the driving force behind these declines. The United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) is the main managing agency of waterfowl in the United States. The USFWS has decided to lower hunting bag limits in effort to decrease the population decline. In this report, I have reported the life history of the scaup, background to the population decline, current regulations, and other material dealing with the scaup population decline. I have created a proposed management plan to improve scaup habitat and compensate for the population decline.
All animals have their own distinct way of communicating to one another and to other species around them. A white tailed deer is one of the most common types of deer in the United States. A male deer is known as a buck while a female deer is known as a doe and her babies are known as fawns. Bucks are usually bigger in size than does. Deer go through a breeding season that causes bucks to go into rut, where they are less cautious with what and where they go and more active than usual. White tailed deer communicate through scent, visual presentation, and vocally.

Sam Bird sat in their first period class and gawked at the man they met last weekend while on the bridge. They were in-love with him.
Tobacco was a main crop in colonial America that helped stabilize the economy (Cotton 1). Despite the fact that tobacco took the place of the other crops in Virginia, as well as replacing the hunt for gold with tobacco cultivation. It proved to be a major cash crop, especially in Virginia and Maryland (Weeks 3). Tobacco left many people financially troubled because other occupations were disregarded or not as profitable as tobacco farmers (Randel 128). The unemployment that tobacco brought about made many colonists poor and homeless (128). After the tobacco boom started, many men signed themselves to indentured servitude hoping to be freed and given land along with other promised goods (Tunis 79). Three hundred and fifty thousand
In 2010 the University of New Hampshire did a study and estimated about 1400 bobcats in the state of New Hampshire. Since 2007 the population has been growing by approximately ten percent each year (NH Fish and Game). As they breed the population will continue to increase and this could cause problems. This could increase diseases and property damage. In order to control New Hampshire’s bobcat population fifty hunting and trapping permits should be issued.
The United States is full of amazing habitats for numerous animal species. There are many examples of species that have been eliminated from the American landscape for economic benefit of a few individuals. There are many examples of species hunted and in some cases eradicated, but I believe there is no example that has had as many species affected in a single area as the Florida everglades. The number of available bird species in the everglades made it an ideal location for the mass slaughter of birds for their feathers. Now, and in the future, if people wish to preserve natural spaces, we need to understand how we interact with the environment and how our actions can impact these delicate ecosystems.
Raina Rodriguez Cleopatra Being the most powerful person to rule an area is difficult, but to be female and to be the very last ruler is even more troubling. Cleopatra, a name known to many, was an Egyptian ruler and last true pharaoh of Egypt. Cleopatra was born in 69 BC in Alexandria, Egypt to the last dynasty in her family. Many people have speculated what Cleopatra’s ethnicity is, and she very likely has Greek descent and African background. By the age of 14, Cleopatra had gained joint regent with her father and eventually after his passing, gained joint monarchy along with her brother, age 10, and herself at the age of 18.
“Hunting and ecosystem-based management is the smartest and most cost-effective way to manage our wildlife. The basic idea of ecosystem-based management is that you manage ecosystems rather than specific species or disciplines.” For example “you do not mange pheasants as much as you manage the ecosystem in which the pheasants live. If the ecosystem is improved, it will produce more pheasants naturally.”(1)
Omega Gaming entered the online casino world in 2012 and have been on quite the wild ride ever since. Each time they create a game they seem to put together something truly creative and entertaining. They recently released Eye of the Pharaoh, which shows that there are no signs of stopping this runaway wave of momentum anytime soon. There might be many games based around Egypt and Cleopatra in 2016, as the market is practically flooded with them, but Omega Gaming have managed to create something different, which appears to stand out against the masses.
