The Outsiders S.E. Hinton wrote her first book, The Outsiders, in 1967 at the age of 19. Before The Outsiders, she was pedestrian, but then became an eminent author; many of her books are still read today. An example of this is The Outsiders, which was an assigned book for me this year, almost 50 years after it was published. The Outsiders has themes like not judging by appearances and how people from different backgrounds are treated differently by society. It is about a boy named Ponyboy and follows a few months of his life. Ponyboy is a Greaser, or a person in the lower class and poorer than the Socs. Despite being pinioned by his background, he is tenacious and wants to escape his way of life. But one of the major obstacles of achieving
The Outsiders, a novel by S.E. Hilton is set in Oklahoma in the 1960s, tells the story of a group of greasers that will always back each other up no matter what the situation. On the other hand, the play Our Town by Thornton Wilder, is set a small town in New Hampshire in the early 1900s that focuses on the lifestyles of common people that share common interests and live together as a whole community. Both stories emphasize the theme of cherishing life.
The title of the story is The Outsiders. S.E. Hinton wrote it. Dell Publishing published the book. The main characters include Ponyboy, Darry, Soadapop, Dally Winston, Johnny, Cherry, Two-Bit, and Marcia.
Have you ever been part of a social group? Did you ever feel like an outsider? The book The Outsiders took place in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the 1960’s. This book is about two teenage groups, the Socs and the Greasers. Both the Socs and the Greasers sometimes felt like outsiders. But which group was the real outsiders? Or, are the outsiders the people who see beyond society groups? I believe that the real outsiders are the people who see beyond society groups.
Ponyboy Curtis - The novel's fourteen-year-old narrator and protagonist, and the youngest of the greasers. Ponyboy's literary interests and academic accomplishments set him apart from the rest of his gang. Because his parents have died in a car accident, Ponyboy lives with his brothers Darry and Sodapop. Darry repeatedly accuses Ponyboy of lacking common sense, but Ponyboy is a reliable and observant narrator. Throughout the novel, Ponyboy struggles with class division, violence, innocence, and familial love. He matures over the course of the novel, eventually realizing the importance of strength in the face of class bias.
There are two groups in this book, the lower income families on the east side called greasers and the higher income paid families who live on the West side of town called Socs. One night the protagonist, Ponyboy Curtis and friend Johnny Cade were making their way back from a movie, they decide to lay down and talk for a little bit before they go home. His older brother, Darry, is waiting when Pony walks in. They instantly start arguing and Darry smacks Ponyboy across the face. Ponyboy and Johnny runaway moments later and find themselves in a park with drunk Socs who attack Ponyboy. Ponyboy regains consciousness to find himself lying on the ground next to an Socs dead body. Johnny had stabbed a Soc in the back with his switchblade. They hang low at an abandon church for a long week. Then, Dally arrives to check up on them and takes them out to lunch. He
While reading The Outsiders by S.E Hinton, I felt as if I took a time travel to the 1960’s. The book clearly gives an insight to the past. Unlike other book, The Outsiders has its own unique meaning. The author created something different than a modern clique book that I read in my day to day life. Hinton’s word choice creates an interesting book where it felt as if it was non-fiction than young-adult fiction. I like this book because the author made something extraordinary by stating the past rather than another author’s writing twenty-first century book.
S. E. Hinton focuses writing about teenage problems in society. While growing up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the concept of high school cliques was senseless to Hinton. She states, “I was mad about the social situation in my high school where everyone got in their little group and wouldn’t make friends outside of it.” (SEHinton.com) The Outsiders was published in 1967 when Hinton was only 17 years old. Hinton’s wrote the novel to fill a gap in the existing teenage literature available at the time. Hinton is credited with changing the way young adult fiction is written (Peck). She wanted to read realistic stories about teenagers and based The Outsiders on events in her own life. Hinton states, “One
Ponyboy and his brothers live on the poorer side of town. They are called greasers and are not as privileged as the socs who live on the richer side of town. Being a greaser is difficult because they are the lowest class. The socs often harass and beat up the greasers. In the beginning of the story, Pony gets beat up by a group of socs.
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton This novel takes place in Tulsa Oklahoma around the 1960’s. Many of the people in this novel have character traits that make them different and special.
Ponyboy is a smart kid who treasured school, unlike other greasers. He starts off as a shy, soft teenage boy who wanted a different life to the typical greaser lifestyle. A main event that starts his change was on the way back home from the movies. He was jumped by a group of “Socs” and they threatened to kill
People should stop judging a book by its cover. Most people think that all greasers want to do it’s start trouble but that is not true. These greasers are great people that should not have to be judge everyday by the people who do not know them. Me and Ponyboy share a lot of the same characteristics. We are similar in many different ways. Some ways are good and some ways may not be so good. He is a nice person, he is smart in school, but sometimes doesn’t think properly out of school which leads him into trouble. Out of all of the characters in “The Outsiders”, I can relate most to ponyboy. If I knew Ponyboy in person, I would definitely be in his clique and I would fit right in.
Johnny Cade is from the outsiders.Johnny is a 16 year old boy that lives in Tulsa,Oklahoma. He is energetic, smart, and his parents fight a lot.Johnny friend is ponyboy curtis.Johnny likes to listen to ponyboy talk about sunsets. The author is S.E. Hinton
When you think of the word ‘outsider’ you think ‘outcast’, or, ‘someone who does not belong’. Well in this case, that would be accurate because Greasers are the Outsiders in town while the Socs run the place.
The Outsiders: Book Review The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is a fantastic story about a fourteen year-old boy named Ponyboy Curtis. Living in a divided society where the Greasers and Socs are bitter enemies that never got along, Ponyboy usually spends most of his time with his two brothers, Sodapop and Darry, and his Greaser buddies, Johnny, Dally, and Two-Bit. After an accident forces Ponyboy and Johnny to run for their lives, Ponyboy learns that Greasers and Socs aren’t all that different as they think they are and that their status doesn’t define them. He also discovers that nothing gold can stay, but there is still a lot of good things left in the world to look forward to.
Out of all the amazing American writers no one compares to S.E. Hinton, better known as Susan Eloise Hinton. Early life of Ms. Hinton was no different from anyone else. Susan Hinton wrote a lot of amazing and inspiring books; her books were also about teens. Whether you are intrigued by the early life, works, or about her writings of S.E. Hinton you will learn that she leads a remarkable life. Hinton was born July 22, 1950 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She attended Will Rogers High School this is where most of her writings were based from. While she was in high school, she started her first draft, and also one of her books The Outsiders was published in 1967. This book was actually based on her high school when the blue collar families which were called Greasers yet on the other side of town were the Socs which were rich from the money in the oil in the area. The Socs wore expensive clothes, and drove nice cars (Smith). Hinton wrote books with the narrators as males, and she did not think boys would read her books because she was a woman writer, so she used her initials as her pen name so readers wouldn 't know she was a woman writer. Hinton met a boy in her biology class as a freshman, he became the inspiration of her second book ,and helped her with her writer 's block by making her write until she got to two pages before they would go out on a date and if she didn 't fish two pages they wouldn 't go out the day.(hinton) She did know later they would get married in 1970.
