Mockingjay Suzanne Collins 390 Pages In the story Mockingjay, by Suzanne Collins, the main character, Katniss Everdeen, along with the rest of the population of Panem, is in a war with the capitol. They are at war with the capitol because they don’t like that the capitol tries to control their every move and watches what they do. It all started in the first book of the trilogy, “The Hunger Games,” when Katniss volunteered as Tribute to go into the Hunger Games so that her sister Prim wouldn’t have to go in the arena and possibly die. Everything that Katniss has done after going into the Hunger Games has been monitored by the Capitol because she has been rebellious and went against what the Capitol tells her to do. Another “character” in Mockingjay is the Capitol and they are the antagonists in the story because they are trying to screw Katniss over. The main external conflict in the story is that Katniss Everdeen and all the Districts, except for District 2 which has joined forces with the Capitol, are at war with the Capitol. The main thing that motivates Katniss to keep fighting the war with the Capitol is that she hates the Capitol and wants to kill the president of Panem herself. Some symbols in Mockingjay are the Mockingjay and President Snow. All these things described above are important to the story because if it weren’t for all these things in the story, the story wouldn’t be exciting and it would be pretty
Bestselling author, Suzanne Collins, on her novel, Mockingjay, delves yet again into the world of Panem; now plunged into chaos thanks to one, Katniss Everdeen. Collin’s theme is displaying upon readers that sacrifices have to be made for the “betterment” of society, but be weary of who you sacrifice for. She adopts a troubled tone to drive the point that amidst all the chaos and anarchy, not even those you root for know all the answers.
Katniss is the protagonist of the novel. She is a tough, self-sufficient, extremely loyal girl whose childhood was cut short by responsibility. After her father died, her mother sank into a deep depression, so it was up to Katniss to feed the family. One evening, she was going through others' trash in desperation when Peeta Mellark purposefully burned bread from his family's bakery and gave it to her. She feels like she owes him for that action, because after that she realizes the forest will be how to feed her family. She and her friend Gale regularly hunt wild game and gather food, selling some and keeping some for their families. Katniss dearly loves her younger sister Prim, so much so that she volunteers to go to the Hunger Games in Prim's place. Though Katniss could very easily feel bitter towards her more sheltered sister, instead she is fiercely protective of her. During the Games, this protectiveness transfers to another young tribute named Rue who Katniss grows very close too and mentors as she were an older sister to Rue.
In the novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, the main character and protagonist is 16 year old Katniss Everdeen, a strong and selfless young woman who is far more mature than her age suggests. As the main provider for her family after her father died, Katniss had to become responsible and resourceful at a young age, which forced her to participate in rebellious behavior in order to keep her family alive. She is an unselfish and protective character, putting herself in danger in order to keep the ones she loves safe, especially for her little sister Primrose. Even after the pain and hardships she has had to go through not only in the games, but in her life, Katniss maintains her
To begin with, The Hunger Games is the first book in the Hunger Games Trilogy, and is written by Suzanne Collins. First off, the novel takes place in Penem, a make-believe future where the Capital is surrounded by districts. The Districts are like slaves to the Capital, give away resources to the Capital and only keep some resources to themselves; so you can imagine that the districts are very poor. The Capital also forces the districts to give up one boy and girl to go to annual Hunger Games, so to prevent War. Katniss, the main character in the book, ends up being part of the hunger games alongside with Peeta. Katniss then has to fight for her life because there may only be one victor. Lastly, throughout this book you’ll see conformity and civil disobedience play a huge role in the Hunger Games.
“ I volunteer, I volunteer as tribute.” Says Katniss Everdeen, the main character in my book The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins . Has someone that you love ever been in danger? Prim Rose Everdeen has been chosen as the girl tribute for district 12. Her older sister Katniss volunteers in her place because of how much she cares about her . Katniss Everdeen is Prim’s sister and also the main character in the book “The Hunger Games.”, by Suszanne Collins. This an action packed distopian book that show what the world could be like in the upcoming years if we don’t fix our culture. I believe that Katniss is a brave and courageous person and that love for someone can overcome anything.
I chose to the modern mythology known as The Hunger Games a novel written by Suzanne Collins and later adapted into a feature film. The novel was actually part of a trilogy The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay. The story begins by introducing you to our main character Katniss Everdeen who lives in a world run by the Capitol where President Snow resides and has enforced a form of martial law on all 13 districts. Every year the Capitol hosts their annual Hunger Games which is a form of entertainment for the Capitol. Out of every district two tributes, one boy and one girl will be picked to participate in the Hunger Games which is a battle to the death. Whichever tribute manages to survive till the end will be rewarded by getting to stay in the capitol and their district will be given more food and supplies. The reason Katniss becomes a part of the games is because her little sister prim is chosen during the reaping to be the tribute so Katniss hearing her sisters name volunteers as tribute to save her sisters life but she tries to win the games for her district and to provide for them. The only problem is she finds it hard to murder the other tributes because they are all so young and she doesn’t see why she must kill them for the Capitols entertainment.
“We had to save you because you're the Mockingjay, Katniss, says Plutarch. While you live, the revolution lives” (Collins). Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games is a complex character who epitomizes the archetype of a hero, however, she also shatters the mold by rebelling against the capital and endangering her whole family. She starts out as a hero to her family, especially her sister, and then becomes the symbol of strength to everyone. Katniss sacrifices herself by volunteering to join the Hunger Games in place of her sister, it is a game of survival where a boy and a girl from each district are forced to fight the other members of other districts to the death. By going out of her ordinary world and preparing to join a game where her life could be taken, she fits right into the archetype of a hero. Her bow and arrow, the weapon that only she can wield, will be the only things to help her survive. Despite these heroic qualities, Katniss makes an erroneous decision and blunder mistakes that shows the reader the flip side of Katniss.
Katniss Everdeen, the main character is seen in an incessant state of anguish, worrying about her beloved younger sister Prim, without the slightest concern for her own welfare, an idiosyncrasy that robustly contradicts with the typical perfect and flawless main character portrayed in almost all action/adventure films. The controversial scene then ends with the fearless Katniss Everdeen taking her sister’s place and volunteering for her in the Hunger Games after she had been conscripted. There are even ceaseless ties made between District 12 and World War II concentration camps ranging from the rag like clothing to the groups of hopeless children with guns aimed at their face, further deliberating Katniss’s initial mother like and selfish instincts when preferring to worry about her sister in an environment that can be related to a significant historical atrocity. As a set-up for the rest of the film, this sequence plays an important role in constructing the underlying theme of the film as a whole. The fact that Katniss finds her own empathy, sense of caring and compassion and her journey of going from a un-trusting and instinctive girl to a strong moraled, selfless woman that would rather die than take an innocent human life. An
Succeeding Katniss’s rescued from the previous hunger games, it is revealed that she is living in district 13 (which was believed to be non-existent) with the rest of district 12, who were bombed. President coin pressures her into becoming the face of the revolution, the Mockingjay, which she accepts after she sees Peeta, who is captured by the capitol, acting as a traitor. While seeing another broadcast of Peeta, he warns Katniss that district 13 is about to be bombed, and that they will be dead by morning. After it is deemed safe to leave the underground bomb shelter, Gale and other rebels make a plan to rescue Peeta as well as Annie, who are hostages by president
The Hunger Games, a novel by Suzanne Collins, is the story of 16 years old, Katniss Everdeen, who fights to death for her district. The Hunger Games is an event hosted every year by the Capitol of Panem, where a randomly chosen boy and girl both need to represent each of the twelve districts that the capitol is composed of. When Katniss little sister, Prim, is chosen to be the representative for District twelve, Katniss volunteers to take her place and fight along her male counterpart, Peeta. The reason I choose this book for my book report is because Katniss is not your typical 16 year old girl. Not only is she her family’s provider but she’s also skillful, strong, rebellious, and unsentimental heroine. These are characteristics that society would mostly link to a 16 year old boy rather than a girl.
In the novel, Mockingjay by Suzane Collins, the protagonist, Katniss Everdeen, is the face of a rebellion, whose goal is to overthrow the capitol of Panem from its tyrannical ways. She along with her group, squad 451, are assigned a mission. The mission is designed to penetrate and overthrow the capitol and kill its president to free the country from the capitol's rule.
To start, Katniss betrays the Capitols orders and leads the rebellion of districts to fight and start a revolution. This is betraying President Snow and his orders. “Peeta, this is your home. None of your family has been heard of since the bombing. Twelve is gone. And you’re calling for a cease-fire? I look across the emptiness. There’s no one left to hear you.” (Mockingjay 129) This shows that the Capitol is horrible and Katniss is calling them out on it. They brainwashed Peeta and she is trying to explain to him and all of the districts why they need to rebel. Katniss and the rest of the rebellion are trying to betray the Capitol. They want to survive and live a free life. They are doing this through rebellion. As explained previously, Catching Fire shows that betrayal is a common part of survival, and so does Mockingjay. AT the end of the story, “I am Katniss Everdeen… I brought down the Capitol….President snow has been tried and found guilty, sentenced to execution.” (Mockingjay 353) This shows that the rebellion succeeded in taking down the Capitol and betraying them. This let all of the citizens of Panem survive. They betrayed the Capitol and can live on their own now. Both Catching Fire and Mockingjay taught the reader that betrayal is a common part of survival but in different
Though Katniss has agreed to be the Mockingjay, she doubted that she would be of any use to her group, District 13. It took time for her to even decide if she wanted this position, as Katniss had believed she was too hated to bring hope to the other areas. In her time as the Mockingjay, she thought that most of the name was just for the camera, which broadcasted “propos” throughout the districts. She was even taken out of her training just to film tapes of her in action. She became angry of this and stopped following her schedule for a while.
This novel is narrated from first person point of view, Katniss Everdeen, a young-adult protagonist from District 12. The novel begins with a reaping ceremony, in which tributes for the Hunger Games were selected from each district. District 12 is surrounded by electrified fences to keep away from wild animals however it is just “another reason to keep [people] inside the fence of District 12” (Collins,p.185). Nature is used against the populace to keep them under surveillance. The Capitol holds the power to segregate and judge its subjects while the populace are too scared and incapable to reflect and question on their conditions, and as a result they have little or no agency over the system that governs them. Katniss acquires the ability
