The Cay is a good book because of how Timothy and Phillip work together and they work together and their characteristics show that they become weak and curious with nothing to do then they start to become independent and brave.Reason why I say this is because in the story Chapter 3 states that “I couldn’t the tears back.Im sure he heard me,but he didn’t move a muscle of his face.” It also says that “ I stayed on the edge of the raft for a long time thinking about home and rubbing Stew Cat’s back.” Which meant that he misses his home back in Dutch West Indies. In addition to add,Throughout the story his emotions and feelings change to being curious, nervous,Frightened, being brave and independent. In this part of reading the story from chapter
He also learned a lesson from his mistakes which ultimately creates a catharsis in the reading
It is not something I would have chosen on my own, but it was enjoyable. My favorite part was the ending when Phillip explains what he would say to Timothy’s grave if he could ever go back to the cay. However I think the author could have included more. In particular, the author should have included more of Phillip's thoughts towards certain situations like Phillip’s blindness, the hurricane, Timothy’s death, or his rescue. Even though it lacked somethings the book did reach its goal of having Phillip conquer his prejudice against Timothy. All around it was a good book and I would read another book by Theodore Taylor.
In “The Cay”, Phillip gets separated from his family, gets stranded on a deserted Island, and loses his sight. These events change Phillip’s life forever and cause an inner transformation in him. Through his inner transformation, Phillip learns to let go of racist beliefs, survive while being blind, and becomes a more mature individual.
One of the main conflicts in the story was that Phillip became blind which caused survival to be challenging. When Phillip became blind, he had to learn the skills to last on the island. If he would not have been blind, then the struggles would have changed drastically. Finding food and fresh water would have been less complicated. When the hurricane hit the cay, it caused critical damage to their shelter and killed Timothy. Timothy was so exhausted after the storm that he collapsed and passed away. This devastated Phillip and he realized that he would be on his own. Everything Timothy taught him came in handy. The problems of this story formed lots of suspense to keep readers
Throughout the book the author creates multiple moods. The moods the author creates are happy, anger, sad. At points of the book the happy mood is when Maleeka starts to write her poetry. At other times of the book the sad mood is when Maleeka describes her childhood. Maleeka lost her father at an early age. Also during the book angry moods are displayed as well. Angry moods are displayed when Charlese is treating Maleeka badly. Charlese treats Maleeka badly when she thinks she can boss Maleeka around and tell her what to do. Maleeka get treated bad by other kids as well.
Bruce found Bucky rummaging around in the kitchen, he looked at him for a second confused.
“Do not judge a book by its cover” .When philip and timothy meet phillip goes first to judging him as an “ugly black man” he did not understand why they were different .In The Cay,philips character reveals that personal growth comes from overcoming obstacles and challenges in life. In the non-fiction article about malaria called Stopping the Spread and the passage from The Cay, a historical fiction novel by Theodore Taylor, malaria is disscussed. The authors portray the symptoms of malaria in different ways in order to give the readers a clear pictures of the danger of the disease.
The Cay is a story about a boy named Phillip who was about a boy who become blind and stranded on a deserted island. Towards the beginning of the story Phillip does not see everything clearly. Once Phillip loses his sight he then begins to see everything around him more clearly. Soon, when Phillip regains his sight he needs glasses. These glasses represent how Phillip can now see the world. Later, when Phillip returned home to Curacao Phillip started to view blacks as ordinary people.
idea of becoming his father. He experiences a significant amount of guilt because he feels that it is his fault that his father died.
Throughout the whole book, the reader can sense his unhappiness with the new house and new surroundings, but eventually he gets used to it. He also feels sad, but his sadness differs from the rest, because he is upset about not being able to play with the boys
He sees her now as what he forced her to become when he took away her innocence and childhood. This is also the first time that he becomes genuinely horrified at his actions. He finally sees what his actions have done to others and how horrid his actions really are. Because of his evil actions taken throughout the story, he drives himself further and further into a state of isolation and despair. His recurring nightmares of the little girls he tormented and his genuine shock, show how he is unable to beat his conscience like he had for so long. He went from a man who shrugged with no remorse when heard that a girl he raped had killed herself, to a man who was overcome enough by his guilty conscience and realization of forever being alone after the rejection by Dunya. So much so, that he ended up killing
