Every writer has certain organization methods implemented throughout their book which make their piece of writing unique. Tina Fey, the author behind the memoir Bossypants, is no exception. Within the autobiography, she utilized different structural devices to portray her life, such as chronological order, lists, sub-chapters, and footnotes. The way Ms. Fey arranged her book undoubtedly affected the memoir as a whole. To begin, Tina Fey organized her book chronologically starting from kindergarten and working her way through her life until present. The memoir started out with the chapter, Origin Story, where she introduces herself to the reader and lays out her early life. For example, “During the spring semester of kindergarten I was …show more content…
For example, one chapter called Sarah, Oprah, and Captain Hook, or How to Succeed by Sort of Looking Like Someone, was very busy and multiple things were the focus of the chapter. To prevent this chapter from becoming confusing, Ms. Fey strategically used sub-chapters, including, “In a Shocking Turn of Events,” “Meanwhile, Across Town,” and “Back at 30 Rock” (page 181-184). All of these sub-chapters allowed for this hectic, action filled chapter to remain organized. In continuation, the use of footnotes within Bossypants, allowed for there to be clarity on certain topics. For instance, “To say he was unfriendly would be the biggest understatement since the captain of Hindenberg said ‘I smell gas.’” When first reading there might be confusion, but it had a footnote attached that said, “Or it would be the biggest understatement since Warren Buffet said, ‘I can pay for dinner tonight.’ Or it would be the biggest understatement since Charlie Sheen said, ‘I’m gonna have fun this weekend.’ So you have options” (page 56). With the footnote it offers more precision and the reader can take away from it the true intent, this guy was not a friendly guy. Furthermore, one chapter as dedicated to her Sarah Palin skits on Saturday Night Live. This chapter was filled with sub-chapters such as, “Week 4: Weekend Update Prime-Time Special with Will Ferrell,” and “Week 5: The ‘Sneaker Upper’” (page 205-207). The sub-chapters and footnotes that Fey included allowed for the memoir to remain well
In this book, Jeffrey Ogbar talks about the beginning of rap, where it started, some of the artists of this genre and some of the controversial topics the artists rap about. He also talks about the usage of the N word as well as men calling women the B word. In the first chapter of the book, Ogbar contextualizes the debate by talking about the history of the minstrel figure in American popular culture, relying mainly on the work of W. T. Lhamon and Patricia Hill Collins. He talks about how the earliest manifestations of hip-hop music in the 1970s came from the Black Power movement and often included direct rejections of minstrel tropes for example in the artist KRS-One’s song “My Philosophy”. Before going on a chronological study of the internal debates that many rappers have over their relationships with the minstrel trope, Ogbar finds the source of the debate in early twentieth-century black writers’, mainly W.E.B Du Bois, interest in elevating many portrayals of African Americans in the arts, versus Harlem Renaissance writers’ rejection of the emphasis on

In chapter three, it gives updates on his situation and explains the steps he took before getting into law enforcement. On February 4th, Serpico’s shooter was arrested; he was twenty-four-year-old heroin addict, Edgar Echevaria. His pervious arrest record shows he was arrested
We all need food to survive. Simply, without proper nutrition, our bodies can't survive. Eating right gives our body the fuel and nutrients it needs to accomplish various bodily tasks. For example, your body desires food to create hormones, form bones and normalize the rhythm of your heart. So, each week or month we go food shopping, picking up items that we need to survive during that timeframe. In 2017, the cost of the food for one week for a family of four ranged between $129.00-$252.10, which seems slightly crazy if you ask me. But what sounds even more ridiculous is the cost the labor to get food from the farm to the table. As we learned in this course about clothing the true cost doesn't take into effect the impact of production of the
It is very interesting how the book is structured. It is structured in chronological order according to how this tragic event happened. It starts
The Constitution was an attempt to address problems of decentralization that were experienced under the Articles of Confederation.
Milton Kuyers is a son of factory worker who grew up in Jenison, MI. He attended Calvin College and graduated with an accounting degree. He worked in the public accounting atmosphere for more than 5+ years when he realized that he wanted more of a life with his family. In order to make this change happen he took a 40% pay cut and joined Sterling manufacturing company as its new CFO. He later became the President of this company at the age of 33 and has been president of companies ever since then.
The book is organized in a topical manner. Which means that the chapters appear in collections of stories revolving around a specific topic, rather than in a chronological order. Some of these chapters revolve around her education, her siblings, and what happened after her interpreting session in the psychologist’s office. As mentioned before, she stopped interpreting. In fact, she stops doing much of anything as she contemplates her unhappy childhood. But soon after this event, her sister’s wedding is planned, and she is forced to confront her past at the wedding. She enjoys herself, but resents that she still needs to interpret for her parents.
In the first few pages of Chapter Three, Kingsolver talks about heirloom vegetables and says “these titles stand for real stories.” What is meant by the title is heirloom plants give off seeds that end up being saved and used for many generations (112). Those seeds have history behind them; family stories that span over several years. For example, on page 144 Kingsolver talked about this heirloom seed exchange in Iowa where one of the founders’ grandfather left a pink tomato plant that his parents brought from Bavaria in the 1870s. The seeds are comparable to a family heirloom. Both get handed down from generation to generation and have a story of what the meaning of the object is and how it all got started.
When learning about factual information, it is necessary to learn through the utilization of a textbook. Whether it is in Science courses or History courses, it is essential for a student to gain knowledge through the understanding that a textbook provides. In HIST3, Kevin M. Schultz initiates an approach to learning about United States History in a chronological manner through 1877. While it effectively states the historic events that happened throughout time, it avoids going into specific detail. In Chapter 2 of Schultz HIST3, he states the events that occurred when the first Europeans came into contact with Native Americans. This contact transpired when Europeans set out to explore lands outside of Europe in order to find riches and to
The book is about the transformation of tipis from past to the present day. The book mentions the first culture that made tipis which was the “Clovis” and a brief background of their culture. After the introductory into the Clovis’ history the book will go into the reasons behind the making of the tipis and how we view them in the modern day.
Comedy in Tina Fey’s autobiography Bossypants is effectively used to describe the overarching theme of body image issues women have on account of what society makes us believe. Body image is a key point in Fey’s novel and a major issue in the world. Tina Fey uses comedy to keep the reader entertained and wanting to read more about the hard and complex issue of body image. The main idea Fey is pinpointing is that society makes women change who they are and what they look like to fit the image men and the rest of society believe is best. By tracing through this theme, and adding in some jokes along the way, she takes a different approach on an issue the world must deal with.
Chapter Nine goes into detail about the late Paleoindian Period the growth of agriculture in North and South America. Clovis points appeared all over the Americas attesting to a continent-wide networking. However, as time pasted distinctive points and tools began to pop up based on region and the needs it provided for. In fact, a common theme of this chapter was the Native Americans ability to exploit their resources and maximize their intake of food sources.
In chapters 1-10 of Petey Petey gets frustrated at the mental institute because they were trying to kill these mice which were his friends. Petey gets frustrated because they are trying to kill his mouse friends and after Joe left all he did was sit by the window and do nothing. On page 47 it says “‘ Look at this.’ Skully pulled off the sheet and roughly shook his head away the mouse droppings. ‘We need some rat poison.’. This is the answer because it was probably one of the biggest struggles he faced because the mice were his friends. In conclusion we can say that petey faced many frustrations at the mental institute. In chapters 1-10 of Petey Petey gets frustrated at the mental institute because they were trying to kill these mice which
Surprised, Fey agreed to read over the script. Writer Seth Meyers had decided that he wanted her to play Sarah Palin during the big 2008 election. After reading what he had written, she agreed to perform (Fey 216). Being a big SNL fan myself, this part of the book was very entertaining. The reader is able to see the behind-the-scenes action that takes place while trying to get the performance down. The political skits are especially important to the SNL cast because it brings in some of the highest ratings. I enjoyed learning about that part of the show because it involved many of my own favorites episodes. Playing the role of Palin was difficult for Fey because it meant that she could receive some real hatred for degrading a fellow woman (Fey 230). All women can relate to this; hatred for the sharing of opinions are very similar to what Fey was dealing with. Speaking out about this, Fey said that it doesn’t matter what others think, your opinions is what makes you who you are (Fey 230). Lines like this help the female reader to believe that Fey is supporting us in speaking out about our opinions, which is something i really like about that line. The personal touch that Tina includes drew me into
