Boston Marathon Bombing Report

On April 19, 1995, Timothy McVeigh set off a truck bomb outside of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The attack under McVeigh left 168 people dead and more than 650 people injured. More than 300 buildings surrounding the area were damaged due to the explosion. “Until September 11, 2001, the Oklahoma City bombing was the worst terrorist attack to take place on U.S. soil” (http://www.history.com/topics/oklahoma-city-bombing). This bombing was a major eye opener to the US.

On April 15, 2013 during the Boston Marathon in Copley Square, two bombs exploded near the finish line killing at least three and injuring over 170 people. This bombing sent the nation in an uproar and it was immediately recognized as a terrorist attack. When the Federal Bureau of Investigation took over, a few days later a surveillance video and photographs of the two suspects were released.

On April 15, 2013, Boston’s first attack on public citizens, in a long time. During this attack 3 civilians were killed and later on there was an officer shot by the suspect. There was also 264 people who were wounded during this time as well. All this was caused by two bombs that went off on Boylston Street each at different parts of the street. This was known as the Boston Bombing. Hello I’m Cameron Smith, our country has many monuments and memorials, all dedicated to people or events that would never be forgotten in America's history. On the dated listed above the Boston Bombing happened, which affected many people who lived in America. This is why I am proposing a new monument to honor all those people who risked their lives to go save others who, were injured. This monument would also honor those who lost their lives during this tragic accident. This monument would be built in Boston, near where the bombs went off.

A few hours after the photos were released the suspects shot an MIT police officer multiple times killing him. The two of them then carjacked a Mercedes-Benz in a neighborhood of Boston where they took the owner of the car hostage. They then forced the hostage to withdraw money from an ATM (Shallwani, 2013). The car’s owner was able to escape when the suspects stopped at a gas station. His cellphone remained in the stolen vehicle, allowing police to focus on Watertown (Shallwani, 2013). On April 19th shortly after midnight the brothers were spotted by a local police officer in Watertown (Arsenault, 2013). Within minutes the area was a standoff between the police and the brothers. As many as 300 bullets were exchanged between police and the brothers in the firefight (Arsenault, 2013). The suspects threw pipe bombs at the police when they were surrounded as well as a copy of their pressure cooker bomb, an exact duplicate of the Boston Marathon bombs. After several minutes of tense gunfire and homemade bombs going off the elder brother, Tamerlan, walked towards the officers until he ran out of ammunition (Arsenault, 2013). On the covers of newspapers and on the screens of many, the story of the Boston marathon hits the ground. Twenty six thousand eight hundred thirty nine people from all over the world came to run in this awe-inspiring marathon. Until the tragedy strikes right in their faces. The explosions, injuring scores of people, effected the lives of innocent civilians. Cheers were replaced with screams, sirens, and the first responders providing aide to the citizens. This was a brutal event just like the one on September 11, 2001. Instead of using seclusion towards political and economical reasons for events, the mass medias perceptive towards incidents involving the religion Islam has created the stereotypical thought in society in which we live in today.

During the iconic Boston Marathon two bombs went off. Thankfully about 3 quarters of the participants had already crossed. Public officials reported that 17 people were in critical condition, 140+ injured, and three dead including an 8-year-old boy. The two bombs were set fairly close to the finish line roughly 100 yards apart. According to the timers the bombs occurred 12 seconds apart.
