Botulism is poisoning by a toxin. It is caused by bacteria called Clostridium botulinum. This germ is commonly found in soil and can grow in improperly canned goods and preserves. Botulism is a rare, but serious illness that can make you unable to move your body (paralysis) and can affect your ability to breathe.

CAUSES
Botulism poisoning can be caused by:
• Eating improperly canned food or preserves.
• Getting this germ into an open wound or sore.
This toxin works by blocking the way the nerves work in your body.

RISK FACTORS
Risk factors for botulism include:
• Eating homemade canned or preserved goods.
• Using illegal drugs. This increases your risk of getting wound botulism.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

• Difficulty breathing.
• Not being able to move your body (paralysis).
• Vomiting , nausea, or abdominal cramps.

DIAGNOSIS
Diagnosis will include a medical history and physical exam. You may also have tests on your blood or stool to identify the bacteria.

TREATMENT
It is important to get treatment as soon as possible. Treatment will include medicines. You may also be given antibiotic medicines. You may also have supportive care, such as:
• Intravenous (IV) fluids or feeding tube, if you are unable to swallow.
• A breathing tube or machine, if your respiratory system is affected.

HOME CARE INSTRUCTIONS
• Take medicines only as directed by your health care provider.
• If you were prescribed an antibiotic medicine, finish it all even if you start to feel better.
• Keep all follow-up visits as directed by your health care provider. This is important.

PREVENTION
• Boil any home canned and bottled products for 10 minutes before eating them.
• If you do home canning, be very careful to follow food-safety procedures.
• Keep any oils that contain herbs or garlic in the refrigerator.
