BP, known as British Petroleum until it rebranded to Beyond Petroleum in 2000, is the third largest energy company in the world. BP has operations on six continents, located in over 80 countries, with its main headquarters located in London, UK. Its largest operating division is BP America, which is located in Houston, Texas. The Deepwater Horizon was a semi-submersible offshore drilling rig owned by Transocean. Built in 2001 in South Korea by Hyundai Heavy Industries the rig was leased to BP from 2001 until September 2013. On 20 April 2010, while drilling at the Macondo Prospect, an uncontrollable blowout caused an explosion on the rig that killed 11 crewmen and ignited a fireball. The fire was inextinguishable and, two days later, on April 22, the Horizon sank, leaving the well leaking at the seabed.
On April 20, 2010, during the final phases of drilling the exploratory well at Macondo, a geyser of seawater erupted from the marine riser onto the rig, shooting 240 feet into the air. This was soon followed by the eruption of a slushy combination of drilling mud, methane gas, and water. The gas component of the slushy material quickly transitioned into a fully gaseous state and then ignited into a series of explosions and then a firestorm. An attempt was made to activate the blowout preventer, but it failed. The final defense to prevent an oil spill, is a device known as a blind shear ram, which was activated but failed to plug the well. After approximately 36 hours,
Deepwater horizon oil spill, also known as a BP oil spill. The spill occurred in the Gulf of Mexico. On April 20, 2010 “An oil well in the Gulf of Mexico failed, causing what has been called the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history and taking the
The Deepwater Horizon was a nine year old, ultra-deepwater, dynamically positioned, semi-submersible, offshore drilling rig built in South Korea. In 2008, British Petroleum (BP) leased it from Transocean to drill for oil in the Gulf Coast. In September 2009, the rig drilled the deepest oil well in history at a depth of 35,055-feet. On April 20, 2010 while drilling the rig exploded at 9:45PM (CST), killing eleven workers and injuring seventeen others. It was caused when methane gas from the well shot all the way up and out of the drill column, expanded onto the platform then ignited and exploded. The explosion then led the rig to burn, with the resulting fire unable to be extinguished 2 days later it sinked leaving
A tragic explosion on April 20th, 2010 changed the Gulf of Mexico and the area surrounding it completely. This was the disastrous explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig. The oil industry has been a large part of the United States’ history for decades and the company BP has been part of it since the start of oil production. According to the article “Standard Oil Company and Trust American Corporation”, John D. Rockefeller ran the Standard Oil Company from 1870- 1911 and controlled almost all of the United States’ oil production (Standard Oil Company 1). The Standard Oil company split into several companies in the early 1900s. The British Petroleum Company purchased some of the Standard Oil Company in Ohio and was later renamed “BP” (Standard Oil Company 12). BP leased the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in 2001. It was built in 2001 by Hyundai Heavy Industries and owned by the company Transocean (Blanchfield 6). 9 years later, the rig had an unfortunate incident that had a lasting impact.
The BP Oil Spill began on April 20, 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico after the BP leased, Transocean owned, Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded, killing 11 and injuring 17 of the 126 crew members. The explosion also sank the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig triggering a massive oil spill that would last for 87 days and leak 4.9 billion barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico. After the explosion, BP and the federal government enlisted the best minds in the country and worked tirelessly to come up with a solution to stop the leaks, but failed several times due to the extreme depth, pressure and technical complexity of using remotely operated vehicles (ROV). The final resolution of the leak was achieved on July 15, 2010, when a sealing cap was installed over top of the well. Although the stoppage of the leak took just under two months, the clean-up efforts continued for much longer as containment booms, chemical dispersants, skimming vessels and controlled burns were used to mitigate the environmental damage. The event was classified as the largest accidental marine oil spill in the world and the largest environmental disaster in United States history.
British Petroleum, now known as simply BP, is a multinational oil and gas company that is headquartered in London, England. On March 23, 2005, a series of massive explosions devastated one of the largest British Petroleum refineries located in Texas City. The blast rattled windows in downtown Galveston, 20 miles away and was even felt in Houston, 35 miles distant. Reports indicated that 15 people had been killed and well over 150 were injured, many of those seriously burned. A BP spokesperson addressed the media by explaining how the explosion had occurred while an “isomerization
On April 20th, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico exploded. Nearly five million barrels were poured into the sea over three months. The Deepwater Horizon oil rig was leased by BP from TransoceaN, a swiss company. It was operated on the Macondo Well. The Macondo Well is 50 miles southeast of the Louisiana coast in the Gulf of Mexico. The Deepwater Horizon is considered to be the largest marine oil spill in the United States. There were workers that were injured during the explosion and the Marine wildlife was endangered. According to Bethel, 28 workers were injured. 11 were fatally injured and 17 workers were severely injured (Bethel University, ). The Week before the explosion, a worker bumped the control switch, causing it
British Petroleum, also known as BP PLC, merged with Amoco Corporation of the United States in 1998, becoming one of the world’s largest oil companies. The oil rig Deepwater Horizon was
On April 20, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, located in the Gulf of Mexico exploded killing 11 workers and injuring 17. The oil rig sank a day-and-a-half later. The spill was referred to as the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, BP oil spill, Gulf of Mexico oil spill, and BP oil disaster. It was first said that little oil had actually leaked into the ocean but a little over a month later the estimate was 12,000-19,000 barrels of crude oil being leaked per day. Many attempts were made to stop the leak but all failed until they capped the leak on July 15, 2010, and on September 19 the federal government declared the well “effectively dead.” In the three months that it took to finally put a stop the leak, 4.9 million barrels of oil were
The Deepwater Horizon oil spill or the BP oil spill refers to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico which flowed for three months in 2010. The spill was a result of the explosion of Deepwater Horizon, which drilled on the BP-operated Macondo Prospect. The explosion killed 11 men working on the platform and injured 17 others (Summarized from Wikipedia article on: “Deepwater Horizon oil spill” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deepwater_Horizon_oil_spill )
When a person thinks of BP they image a green gas station and gas pumps. But BP has over 100 years of history behind it. BP was formally known as British Petroleum and the Anglo-Persian Oil Company. It was founded in 1908 by William D’Arcy, a rich British man who invested all his savings in his quest for oil in the Middle East. At the time BP was committed to protect the environment and took necessary steps to research areas where they would likely be drilling for oil to minimize habitat disruption and protect the area. But as competition in the area heightened, and shares of the
British Petroleum (BP) is the UK’s largest corporation and is one of the largest private-sector energy corporations in the world. It is the third largest energy company and the fourth largest company in the world. It is one of the seven gas super majors. It operates in over 80 countries, and in 2010 their production was approximately 3.4 million barrels of oil each day. The company is headquartered in London.
BP, formerly known as British Petroleum, is the third largest oil and gas producer in the world, producing almost 3.8 million barrels per day. BP was founded in 1908 by William Knox D’Arcy in London, United Kingdom. The company operates worldwide in several sectors of the oil and gas industry such as generating low carbon energy, moving oil and gas, and off and onshore oil and gas extraction (BP, 2014). However, the offshore Deepwater Horizon oil spill that happened on April 20th, 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico was one of the greatest oil spills that took place in history. The disaster caused the loss of the lives of 11 workers, severely injuring 17 workers, and the aftermath had a great impact on the environment in the Gulf of Mexico.
Deepwater Horizon was a well-known oil drilling rig which operated within the Macondo Prospect located in the Gulf of Mexico. This oil rig was a fifth generation ultra-deep water dynamically positioned, semi-submersible mobile offshore drilling unit, and was built in 2001 by Hyundai Heavy industries.5 Within the year of 2009, Deepwater Horizon drilled the deepest oil well ever recorded—vertical depth of 35,050 feet in the field of Tiber oil.6 A year later in 2010, it was then commissioned within the Gulf of Mexico. On April 20th, the industry of oil drilling all changed, here is when Deepwater Horizon exploded and began to sink within the Mexican waters.6 On the day of the explosion, Deepwater Horizon was within the process of completing its exploration, doing so by the capping of the well it had bored approximately three miles
On April 20, the explosion on the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico led to the largest accidental release of oil into marine waters in history. As a result, a huge loss of money and life was caused and affected serious environmental damage to wild animals and water pollution. BP was accused of their irresponsibility that it took 87 days before the well was closed and sealed. BP’s shares
British petroleum (BP) is one of the seven super major oil company in the world. BP are the fourth largest gas and oil company in the world. BP has a hand in every aspect of the oil business from exploring for new oil to marketing and distribution. BP originally started as the Anglo-Persian Oil Company in 1908, established as a subsidiary of Burmah Oil Company. The Burmah Oil Company. Would capitalize on discoveries they made in Iran and the middle east. The company would take its current name as British a petroleum in 1954. The company slowly started to expand from their roots in the middle east. BP chose to expand to Alaska in 1965. BP would continue their expansion in America when the gain the majority control of Standard Oil of Ohio in 1978. Also during the time BP would continue their ongoing exploration for new sources of oil. They became the first company to strike oil in the North Sea. The British government gradually privatized Standard Oil of Ohio for 1978-1987. In the last half of the 20th and the beginning of the 21st century BP took two major steps to expand their company. BP first major expansion occurred when they partnered with Amoco during this time they also acquired and absorbed Burmah Castrol in 2000. Also for 2003 to 2013 BP had a joint partnership with the oil company TNK of Russia. BP tireless effort towards expansion have made them highly successful and one of the top four oil and gas companies in the world. BP turned a profit of 6.48 billon U.S.
