A Long Way Gone The book I picked is “A long way gone”. It relates the experience of a child soldier from Sierra Leone, which is a country located in Southern Africa, between Guinea and Liberia, next to the North Atlantic Ocean. This former British colony has currently six million inhabitants, and gained independence in 1961. The official language of Sierra Leone is English, but only 30% of its citizens are educated. Besides that the average life expectancy is 40 years and AIDS / HIV affects 7% of the population; and the economic and social infrastructure of Sierra Leone are not well developed. In addition, nearly two-thirds of the population survives on subsistence agriculture, although the extraction of alluvial diamonds represents almost half the country's exports and the most important source of foreign exchange earnings. The first diamonds from Sierra Leone were discovered in 1930. In addition to diamonds, the country has many natural resources of titanium ore, bauxite, iron ore, gold and iron chromite. Today, Sierra Leone is in peace, and exports approximately $142 million worth of diamonds annually. Between 1991 and 2002, Sierra Leone has gone through a violent civil …show more content…
Members of a micro-cultural group such as child soldiers possess some physical and cultural trait that distinguishes them from others such as being a child and being more violent than usual for example. At the beginning of the book, villagers even though they were child soldiers because they are kids and wandering. This shows that micro-cultural group such as rebels have specific cultural and physical trait. However in that case, since the power is detained by the army and the rebel groups, they are the ones that represent the macro-cultural
Ishmael Beah was an innocent boy who enjoyed playing football, swimming in the streams, and even started a rap and dance group with his friends and older brother. The group discovered their love for rap music from old cassette tapes of O.P.P, Run D.M.C, and the Sugarhill Gang. Ishmael and Junior, along with their other friends cherished these few hip hop and rap cassette tapes. Ishmael constantly carried these couple tapes on him at all times. They choreographed dance routines and memorized all of the lyrics. The boys also entered a talent show in a close town. Ishmael, Junior, Talloi, and Mohamed have been singing and dancing to rap music since they first formed the group when Ishmael was only eight years old. They

The main theme in Gone by Michael Grant is that people will stand up for what they believe in when they need to. In this book when everything is going wrong all people over the age of fifteen have disappeared into thin air and kids are all that's left in the FAYZ (fallout alley youth zone). Sam and Astrid, the two main characters, have to stand up to the kids that put themselves in charge of the FAYZ. Sam and Astrid are forced into a position of leadership and must stand up for what's right.
In the book, A Long Way Gone, there is an array of different tones. The author uses them to shine light on the central theme and main idea of the story. The tone is important because it emphasizes the emotion of the text and the story being told. The author, Ishmael Beah, who is also the main character in the book has had a rough life. He grew up in the city of Mattru Jong, which is in the country of Sierra Leone. War had swept over the land changing everything and everyone. Beah was forced into being a child soldier at the age of twelve. By looking at the book, A Long Way Gone, one can see that Beah was put through things that no person should go through and it has shaped his entire world, with death, loss, and pain.
In Ishmael Beah’s memoir, A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier, Beah encourages the opinion that everyone is responsible for his/her own actions in all cases. Beah proves this opinion to be true through death, thievery, and violence.
A Long Way gone is a memoir about Ishmael Beah’s life before and after he was a child soldier. It took a toll on his life when his village was invaded by the rebel soldiers. His family was taken his mom and his little brother everything he had and known was ripped from his reach. Ishmael was a good kid and was kind because of the people around him his community shaped into the person he was when he lived there. He had a good place and had been surround by good people all of his life so it was easy for him to be happy just like the people around him.
War is and can be defined as both a state of emergency and the liberator to a world so corrupt and unjust. The war in Sierra Leone separated families and ruined lives. How can a fight for a cause so right be so wrong. The Books “The Bite of the Mango” and “A Long Way Gone” compare and contrast Ishmael Beah’s experience to Mariatu Kamaras’. Both books are very different yet very similar. In The Bite of the Mango and A Long Way Gone both characters lose their childhood because of the war, but go through different journeys based solely on their gender.
We all have a story, we all go through tough things in life. We can relate to a lot of things and we find out that were not so different from other people. The memoir A Long Way Gone and the film The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete have a lot of similarities and differences. Even though they live in two different places, they are very similar. One similarity would be that they are both struggling alone. They both have their parents but the boys are going to learn how to survive alone without them. They are two young black boys ages 12 and 13 that live in poverty. They become independent throughout their stories. Another thing that both Ishmael and Mister can relate to is drugs. When Ishmael was brought into the army, he started adapting to the other
Violence is almost everywhere around the world. It is somewhat unavoidable in life. In the memoir A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah, Ishmael experiences numerous severe and frightful demonstrations of violence in various ways. These cases of violence scar his life for quite a while, however there are some learning focuses that come extremely close to violence. A few things that stem from the effects of Ishmael's fierce encounters are, repulsiveness of memories, posttraumatic stress disorder and a loss of innocence.
Have you ever imagined what it would be like to be in the center of a war as an adolescent or how the people who experienced war feel after it all ends? Well, Ishmael Beah is an activist and writer, but also was a child soldier in a war in Sierra Leone. He didn't have a choice other than to join the army if he wanted to survive. Due to the war in Sierra Leone, Beah faced many hardships that impacted his life in a negative way.
The old man when saying, “We must strive to be like the moon” means that since no one complains about the moon and everyone likes the moon we need to strive, as people, to be more like the moon. We need to strive to be nice to everyone so that no one has anything to complain about when they are around us. This advise definitely can be applied to everyone’s life because everyone should want people to have nothing to complain about when talking about them.
War is horrific no matter where it takes place. Mothers, fathers, elders, and children are all affected by war. In fact, there are many memoirs depicting life in war torn countries. Two such memoirs are A Long Way Gone written by Ishmael Beah and The Bite of The Mango written by Mariatu Kamara. A Long Way Gone depicts Ishmael’s life running from the civil war in Sierra Leone and becoming a child soldier. The Bite of The Mango recounts Mariatu’s journey of losing her hands and escaping to different countries is written with the help of Susan McClellan. Both writers go through traumatic events due to Sierra Leone’s Civil War, but Ishmael’s will to live was more tenacious than Mariatu’s.
I didn't know some armies or militaries get kids to fight for them and if they are orphans they make them believe that every single rebel they fight make it seem like those are the rebels that killed their family members or parents, which is bad considering that there are adults willing to fight and they pick sad mournful kids to take their battles to enrage them to make them fight.I didn't know that some people can talk about the death of parents without getting sentimental about it some people don't share about it or write a book about it at all I wouldn't grief about it but I wouldn't talk about and probably see a therapist if it get worse but since he didn't have anybody
A Long Way Gone written by Ishmael Beah and published by Sarah Crichton Books in 2007 is a nonfiction account of Ishmael Beah’s experiences as a boy during the Sierra Leone Civil War. Sierra Leone is a under developed country in west Africa neighboring the countries Guinea and Liberia. The year of 1991 saw the rise of the Revolutionary United Front against Sierra Leone’s government. Known as the rebels, the RUF’s goal was to “rid the country of the corrupt APC government” (Beah 222), thus sparking a war. After multiple takeovers of Freetown, the capital Great Britain is forced to send in troops to end the war. In 2002 peace is restored. Ishmael is first affected the by the war at age 12 in 1993. He successfully escapes the war on October 31, 1997. Ishmael argues that the lifestyle of a boy soldier is the most degrading and depriving experience a boy could ever have. A Long Way Gone perfectly describes the plight of boy soldiers being lured and taken captive mentally by war. The style of the book effectively portrays the atrocities of Ishmael’s actions and other boy soldier’s actions for the sake of self preservation. The book does get complex with the amount of characters which hinders the reader’s ability to follow the storyline. Also, the lack of a distinct time table leaves the reader not knowing where each memoir falls in relation to the whole story. In all, A Long Way Gone effectively portrays the issue of boy soldiers but comes up a little short in structure and some
Beah’s use of imagery is extremely important for portraying Ishmael’s life as a child soldier. The description Beah uses makes the reader ultimately feel like they are there with him. The imagery shown also describes in great detail how Ishmael’s life went from innocent to an unimaginable life. Ishmael Beah writes a novel, A Long Way Gone, to show the violent images in his journey through Sierra Leone.
