Ares 3 Mission Crew lands on Mars. The Ares 3 Mission Crew starts evacuating because of an intense dust storm. In the chaos, Watney is pierced by an antenna. Unable to find him in the mess, the rest of the crew leave assuming Watney was dead. Watney’s injury doesn’t kill him but he has no way to contact Earth and he doesn’t have enough food and water to last for a long enough time. He starts growing potatoes and burning hydrazine for water. NASA finally finds out he’s alive through satellite images and start to look for ways to rescue him. However, NASA decides to keep the news from the rest of the crew so they don’t get distracted. Meanwhile, Watney plans to go to the landing site of the next mission, Ares 4. He starts preparing the rover for the …show more content…
This gives him the ability to contact NASA. Mitch Henderson, the Ares 3 flight director, convinces Teddy Sanders, the NASA administrator to tell the rest of the crew about Watney’s survival. The crew feels happy and guilty at the same time. Due to Watney’s repeated use of the airlock, the canvas in the Hab tears. This decompresses the Hab, almost kills Watney, and kills his plants. Luckily, Watney is able to repair the Hab. NASA makes a probe to send Watney supplies but the rocket disintegrates after liftoff. In a second attempt to send Watney supplies, NASA makes a deal with the China National Space Administration. However, there is no time to build one with a soft-landing system so they are faced with the idea of building a probe whose cargo can survive crashing into Mars’ surface at 300 meters per second. Luckily, Rich Purnell, an astrodynamicist, comes up with a plan to get the Hermes, the spacecraft the rest of the Ares 3 crew is aboard, to Mars to save Watney. However Sanders rejects Purnell’s plan because it could risk the lives of the Ares 3 crew. Although Sanders vetoed the plan, Henderson secretly tells the crew and they all
If you were stranded in a desert with no form of communication, how would you handle the situation? In the fictional story titled The Martian written by Andy Weir, the main protagonist is an astronaut named Mark Watney. Mark is on Mars with the rest of the crew on Ares 3 collecting information to bring back home, when a severe sandstorm strikes and they abandoned the mission, but the rest of the crew on Ares 3 left Mark behind on Mars because they thought he had died in the storm. Throughout a duration of the story, Mark is faced with a plethora of external conflicts, but he perseveres and that perseverance eventually paid off when he makes it home safely. I believe the theme of this story is: having enough perseverance can get you
Crew 697 has a 100% advancement rate, with all participating youth earning additional awards, including 4 Eagle Scouts. 100% of our high school graduates went on to attend a University. The Crew has performed over 800 man-hours of community service to churches, fraternal organizations, and state
The Kindertransport missions were an attempt at rescuing German children from the horrors of the Holocaust (“Kindertransport, 1938-1940”). The nazis burned Jewish synagogues, orphanages, and other Jewish buildings (Ward). Organizations wanted to do everything in their power to protect the children from these terrible things. While these worked for many children, there were still several that had to suffer. Many of the Jews were separated from their families forcefully by Hitler and the Nazis. Jews were also sent to concentration camps where they were often tortured and killed by genocide. During the Holocaust, orphanages were burned down, children and parents were separated from each other, and rescue missions took place. The Kindertransport
After Joker reconnects with Cowboy, the platoon is sent to secure an area in enemy control. A battle proceeds with casualties on both sides. Once the area is secured, the members of the platoon are interviewed. Many of the members express their discontent with the South Vietnamese. The South Vietnamese people do not respect Americans. In Cowboy’s interview, he says, “I keep meeting them coming the other way”, which refers that the South Vietnamese retreat while the Americans are fighting. Animal Mother says, “We’re shooting the wrong gooks”, in which he thinks they should be fighting the South Vietnamese.
Thank you for contacting me! I am extremely familiar with DATE and IPB in relation to DCGS-A. While stationed at Fort Bliss, I participated in the Army Warfighter Assessment -- a 30 day, multi-national training event that utilized the DATE 2.0 scenario. During this exercise, we exclusively used DCGS-A to log, assess, and deliver actionable intelligence to higher and lower echelons. I led a team in completing Brigade-level mission analysis products (PMESII-PT & ASCOPE factors, key people, enemy composition, enemy capabilities, and situation templates). I became familiar with the tactics, techniques, and procedures described and, for example, regularly overlayed doctrinal templates on 2D maps to contribute to situation templates. In creating MCOOs, I drew from motivations and assessments made from the DATE manual, and noted key terrain and possible areas of particular conflict. By
From 1974 to the present, two separate spacecraft have completed journeys to Mercury: Mariner 10 and MESSENGER. The objective was and is the same for both, that objective being to get pictures of Mercury from several angles, so scientists at NASA have multiple points of reference. Mariner 10 attempted this, to little avail, and so MESSENGER was brought on to do the job.
When they found out about the problem before lift off they modified the module to let the spacecraft enter the lunar module for three hours in order to keep the pressure. While the crew was up in space they noticed many surprises the crew expected to be flying smooth but that was not what happend around 55 minutes and 46 seconds Joe Kerwin communicated with the capsule communicator on duty and he said “the spaceship is in really good shape as far as we're concerned”. Joe kerwin knew that something was wrong and as far as the crew is concerned they were bored to tears in the space ship. After the crew said goodnight on live news according to NASA the oxygen tank No.2 blew up then right after oxygen No.1 blew at that point they knew they had to get back to earth and they radioed with the capcom and told them the issue they lost two of these fuel cells and two oxygen tanks. 20 minutes in after the tanks blew and they lost 2 fuel cells they were thinking about using the Im lifeboat to get back safely. Ground controllers in Houston texas radioed to them to take care of what they can and try to solve the problem before a mission failure. Another 15 minutes passed and they were ordered to make there way to the Lm lifeboat. The lm lifeboat was a concern at the time because since the power was down they were unsure about using the Lm lifeboat because it required power and that's what they were running low on they decided to conserve what they have before it's wasted and there's no way home. Latin America is known for the low education rates. This is unfortunate because high percentages of the countries in this situation are children under 25. For example Peru has an overall population of 45.88% of children under 25, Brazil has 39.74%, and Guatemala peaks at 57.56%. Without solid education, this population will continue to live in poverty. While planning a mission trip, it is important to note what a country is truly in need of. All of these countries are needy. They need better farming, clean water, and more stable communities. But that all stems from a need of knowledge. They are most in need of education.
Watney has to make it to the Ares 4 landing site, because the Mars Ascent Vehicle for Ares 4 is already there, as it is supposed to be. He will have to make heavy modifications to the MAV to make it lighter, and will have to intercept Hermes and dock with Hermes. Then, Watney will return to Earth with the rest of the crew safely. Everyone has to agree to the plan in order for it to go on. After the plan was approved, the plan was carried out. The crew of Ares 3 had to extend their mission by over a year, and Watney will have to get to the Ares 4 mission site, the Schiaparelli crater, which is 3200 km away. Watney made heavy modifications to his two rovers. Watney encountered some difficulties while driving, such as encountering a dust storm, and flipping over when going down a hill. As he arrived at the Ares 4 MAV, he has to make heavy modifications to it so that it can be light enough and powerful enough to intercept Hermes. The Ares 3 crew had to blow a hole in Hermes and also activate attitude thrusters when trying to dock with the Ares 4 MAV. At last, Watney was saved with 3 broken ribs (from the G-forces on the
It is a decision that most individuals lacking his purposefulness and intelligence would be defeated. It is something that took courage and self-reliance to do. I hate to admit it but if I were left on Mars all alone, I would have a very different outcome. I would most likely have some sort of panic attack resulting in actions that would end up killing myself. If someday I ever ended up in space my mental ability would not allow me to have the ingenuity to come up with a plan to save myself and sustain me for up to four years on Mars. Mark used his knowledge and his botanist experience to live on Mars. If I were stranded I don’t know how useful my crafting skills would be to my survival. “Then I detached twenty-eight panels from the solar farm and dragged them to the rover. I spent four hours stacking them this way and that. The poor rover looked like the Beverly Hillbillies truck. Nothing I did worked
University of the Pacific in its History and Mission web page states, “University of the Pacific's mission is to provide a superior, student-centered learning experience integrating liberal arts and professional education and preparing individuals for lasting achievement and responsible leadership in their careers and communities.” (Pacific.edu, 2015). This mission drives how the Center for Professional and Continuing Education (CPCE) operates and in many ways the culture within the department.
Many assume that to get from one point to another, similar paths are typically taken. Both the Joker from the Dark Knight and the Islamic state bring chaos into the world with the intention to ultimately cleanse the world of its sinners and uncover what they believe the truth of humanity is. Yet the Joker, however, believes he unveils the truth while ISIS believes they exterminate the lies. Circumstances such as these are similar in its root while opposite in its execution.
In the movie, “Full Metal Jacket” directed by Stanley Kubrick, there are multiple characters that struggle with internal conflicts. One of the main characters that the film focuses on is Private Davis, also known as “Joker”. Throughout the film Joker is struggling to maintain inner peace by respecting his morals and values, while still being a soldier in the middle of the Vietnam war. Kubrick has Joker be tested of his beliefs multiple times and still leaves the viewer anxious, leaving Joker’s problem unresolved. Joker struggles to be a fearless soldier because he cannot separate his morals from what is necessary to survive the war.
The MARs project failed on day one. There where multiple issues raised immediately after MAR’s was released. This caused a concern for patients at the hospital due to prescription mix ups. The system became overloaded and was brought down shortly after being released.
“Dark Knight” was a smash hit for it’s fame, explosions, and chase scenes, but what really had me on the edge of my seat was perhaps the most riveting villain I had ever seen. The Joker. The Joker is a mob-backed terrorist with suicidal tendencies and According to the DSM, the joker would be given the diagnoses of Antisocial personality disorder. He is not reasonable, he’s not afraid of anything, and the last thing he cares about in the world is himself. As Alfred explained to Bruce, “Some men just want to watch the world burn
