BP, a leader in deep water oil drilling efforts, triggered the worst environmental disaster in America’s history, when on April 20, 2010 a gas release and subsequent explosion occurred on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig. The oilrig, which BP was leasing from Transocean, a Swiss company, was operating on the Macondo exploration well, which is located roughly 50 miles southeast of the Louisiana coast in the Gulf of Mexico. The explosion killed 11 workers, and injured 17 others, and dumped an estimated 205 million gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico.

BP tends to make bets that others don’t which is most likely why the disastrous deep water horizon oil spill occurred in the Gulf of Mexico five years ago. The fire burned for 36 hours while hydrocarbons leaked into the gulf before the well was sealed, unfortunately eleven individuals died. It has been difficult for BP to be the best company right now since this falling and they have been in reparation mode since this catastrophe. However, BP is now incorporating high safety and showed everyone that they are very reliable on the recovery of this hardship of BP trying to mix oil with water. BP came together to control the situation, cleanup, and diminish as much contamination as possible into the gulf. In addition, they are devoted long term to improve the Gulf of Mexico’s bionetwork and promise to be more careful so this will not happen again.

On April 20, 2010, 11 men lost their lives after an explosion in the semi-submersible drilling on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig working on the Macondo exploration well for BP in the Gulf of Mexico. The well blowout and subsequent oil spill pumped 3.2 million barrels in the Gulf of Mexico the biggest marine disaster in US history. The fire burned for 36 hours before the rig sank, and the hydrocarbons leaked into the Gulf of Mexico before the well was closed and sealed. After the explosion and sinking of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, a sea-floor oil gusher flowed for 87 days, until it was capped on July 15th 2010.

The BP Oil Spill which happened on April 20, 2010, was the largest offshore oil spill in U.S. history releasing approximately 185 million gallons of crude oil into the gulf. This event was the result of a wellhead on the Deepwater Horizon oil drilling platform blowing out in the Gulf of Mexico approximately 40 miles southeast offs the Louisiana coastline. Eleven men working on the oil rig platform were killed and 17 others were injured. People livelihood and the environment were devastated by this event.

Prior to this incident BP had major industrial accidents that killed employees and/or spilled oil in the environment. Reports suggesting that the top management of BP gave importance to operating cost cutting measures over safety and risk evasion. This ultimately lead to such catastrophic incident. The New York Times reported that the loss of life and entire oil rig at the Macondo site in 2010 were the result of poor risk management, failure to observe and respond to critical indicators, last-minute changes to plans, inadequate well control response and insufficient emergency bridge response training by operating companies and individuals responsible for drilling at the operation of the Deepwater Horizon. According to the BP this accident involved a well integrity failure, which lead to loss of hydrostatic control of the well. it was followed by a failure to control the flow from the well with the blowout preventer (BOP) equipment, which allowed the release and subsequent ignition of hydrocarbons. British Petroleum(BP) had a massive oil spill on April 20, 2010. In the BP Oil Spill, more than 200 million gallons of oil was spilled into the Gulf of Mexico for a total of eightyseven days, making it the biggest oil spill in United States history. The initial oil rig explosion killed eleven people and injured seventeen others(“11 Facts”). The spill killed hundreds of animal, plant life and destroyed the environment. BP was penalized up to $40 billion in fines. Stricter regulation on all forms of oil drilling are necessary to protect everyone and everything involved, especially the environment.

BP was founded in 1908 under the name Anglo-Persian Oil Company. They changed their name to British Petroleum in 1954 and merged with Amoco in 1998. (BP Public Website, 2010) “The Texas City Refinery is BP’s largest and most complex oil refinery... It was owned and operated by Amoco prior to the merger of BP and Amoco.” (Michael P. Broadribb, 2006) Throughout their history, there have been a number of accidents that have been caused by negligence and disregard of safety precautions. Unfortunately many lives have been cut short or seriously injured as a result. My research will focus on the 2005 Texas City Oil Refinery Explosion. The BP Oil spill pumped almost 200 million gallons of crude oil into the gulf of mexico, for approximately 87 days. This became the largest and most devastating oil spill in the United States. The coastlines of Texas, Alabama, Florida, MIssissippi and Louisiana were drastically effected by this horrible oil spill. In the end the BP oil spill negativity impacted more than 16,000 miles of coastline. Even today, oil is appearing on shores, and created horrible damage to living organisms in the area and around the area. The British Petroleum Oil Spill effected the ecosystem, human health and created many jobs in the effort to clean up the disaster.

The acquisition of the Prudhoe Bay, Alaska refineries produces more than five percent of America’s oil. Therefore, it guaranteed BP’s economic goals by continuing producing oil in the United States. However as soon as 2001 through investigations, BP started having severe safety issues, in addition to this, by 2005 started a chain of unethical operational and maintenance safety hazards that lead to deaths, injuries, environment and ecosystem disaster in Texas, Alaska, and in the Gulf of Mexico. In early 2006 over 265,000 gallons of oil leak was one of the most dangerous pipeline leaks in history. This paper will discuss the case of BP’s unethical sadistic negligent and environmental behaviors that lead to billions of dollars in fines for failure to act and operate in accordance to the safety laws.
