Bruce Tuckman’s stages of group development include the forming phase, storming phase, norming phase, and the performing phase. This model was developed in 1965, showing the behavior of small groups and how they operate in a variety of environment. It is suggested that all groups should experience all four stages before they can successfully reach their fullest potential of performance. High performance teams must also consider the context of their teams, the composition, and competencies of their teams. According to Dyer, high performing teams are those with members whose skills, attitudes, and competencies enable them to achieve team goals. (Dyer, 13) These teams set goals, make decisions, communicate, manage conflict, and solve problems with the support and motivation of the entire team. When composing an effective team, you must be able to recognize the strengths and weakness of your team members, and be able to adjust when needed, to ensure the common goal is achieved. The reasons for poor performance include the misunderstanding of set goals and expectations of the team, the wrong set of people and skills, and the lack of creativity and desire to accomplish the team goal. Forming a team can sometimes be a challenge. Some people are excited, some already carry the leadership role, and then some have a hard time working with a team.
