Zoey’s last words resonated in Rheem’s head; she did have a valid point. Instantly he got a weird feeling in the pit of his stomach; he didn’t fear for his boy but he was concerned as to what had been so important for him walk off without saying anything to him or Zoey. And the fact that he wasn’t back by now, told him that Esto may be in the process of fucking some shit up.

Bucky’s preoccupation with polio and fear of the disease are some of the key factors that hinder his ability to reinvent himself into the soldier-like heroic figure of his hometown. In the particular scene where Marcia leads Bucky to her cabin in the middle of the night, Bucky is too engrossed in his survivor’s guilt and fear of polio to enjoy spending time with Marcia.

“That’s a great story, Ethel, one of my few fond memories as a slave. To start off, I met Frank in the cookhouse while I was gathering food to bring back to our master’s house. He and I were both house servants. My heart stopped when first saw him and I thought he was the most handsome man I had ever seen. On the outside, he was a strong, tough man, but on the inside, I felt that he would be caring and sweet. Later that night, after I had finished my work we met again in the cookhouse. Instantly, we fell for each other and our marriage ceremony was performed two months later.”

"What the hell am I supposed to do?" he said aloud, only to gasp as a small object brushed against his leg.

“Cassidy, I know we met in a unique way, but I’m just glad that I met you. I feel like this was fate playing a hand in our lives. That day we met, Kade forced me to go in this haunted house against my will. I will forever be grateful to him for that. If he hadn’t had forced me, I don’t know where we would be today. Everyday we have gotten closer and closer and I feel like we should take the next step of our lives.
