Everyone at one point or another has wanted to travel to different planets. In between 2030 and 2040, Nasa is planning on sending a group of astronauts to Mars to see if they could live there someday. Through all of this, Nasa gets less than 1% of the federal budget. Congress should give Nasa a bigger budget to examine all of Earth's problems instead of all the environmental, and mechanical problems in traveling and settling Mars. Some say that Nasa should focus more on Mars than on Earth. However, being there will be much worse. Scientists say that they can make water and electricity on mars with fuel cells. In spite of this, according to Regis from the New York Times, negative 81 degrees fahrenheit is the average temperature and there is no oxygen or food sources there. We would need to bring food sources with us and then we have the problem of not even breathing! Imagine the cost of that.
Finally, they also have the scientists who say that we have already sent rovers to Mars with no trouble, so why not a spacecraft with lifeforms? In reality, however, everything in space can be deadly, from a mechanical failure to something hitting the spaceship. In 2003, the Columbia Space Shuttle broke apart, and it was proven that a piece of foam insulation is what damaged the craft (Brown). This means that any debri in space can be a fatal problem for people on board the ship.
In conclusion, Nasa should get more funding for earth’s problems and less for space due to the huge amount of variables, Including the problems here on earth, such as the ozone depletion. The public’s lack of knowledge about NASA’s research explains why many people believe that the organization is receiving too much funding. According to NASA.gov, the organization has received 19.3 billion dollars for the 2016 fiscal year. This equates to about 0.486% of the government budget. While this may seem like a lot, the percentage has drastically decreased over the past few decades by almost 3.5%. NASA is receiving “more money each year, but at the same time a smaller percentage of the federal budget” (Steinburg 240). There are projects that NASA is currently working on that they cannot finish due to lack of funding. If NASA can find a way to receive more funding, then not only can the organization capitalize on these current projects, but it can also open up discussion for future ones as well. The possibilities of what humans can achieve is endless, the only restrictions are time and money, two of the most important factors in society. While time can’t be controlled, money can. Now it’s just a matter of getting more of it, which is going to be hard for NASA to do, especially when people feel as though they are receiving too much funding.

A survey was conducted between February 4, 2013, and February 6, 2013, by random people, the results were 75 percent believe that NASA’s budget should be doubled to 1 percent of the federal budget to fund initiatives including a mission to Mars.
Added to the economic costs to America, a venture to Mars causes substantial risk to the society. The environment and society are very important to human survival on Earth. Even though some people feel that exploring Mars may help understand the Earth better, and going to Mars will be a great scientific milestone, in my opinion exploring Mars is a bad idea. The atmosphere on Mars is about 100 times thinner than earth and it is not suitable for us to breath. It contains about 95% of carbon dioxide and little or no oxygen. This will make it very difficult for humans to survive there. Unlike Mars, which is not protected and is exposed to everything, the Earth is protected by the ozone layer. Some citizens believe that NASA is a waste of time. Some would venture to say the program has “no practical use to mankind” and the $17 billion of taxpayers money is put towards failed projects and a hope to get to another planet (Government funding). Every time the program goes into space there is no guarantee they will find something new. Spending money on ineffective trips is pointless for the taxpayers; every time the astronauts go into space they go to the same places making no progress. Since the United States is tied with NASA, the program prevents branches of the government placing space work with another agency, which prevents progress with other space agencies (Government funding). Before going into space, NASA should try to solve problems on Earth first. Such as making a car that doesn’t use gas or pollute the air, finding ways to fix the ozone layer, making less pollution by using renewable resources. Richard, an author for the website GOVTEEN Global Community, wrote an article briefly explaining why we as a nation, should not go to Mars. Some of the key points of his argument against going to Mars stressed that the financial cost would be too high, it would require several new spacecraft and ground habitats, and several new technologies that currently do not exist. He also was concerned about the budget cuts that have already stripped the National Aeronautical Space Administration (NASA) to a shell of what the space program used to be. The impossible was reached on July 20th 1969 when we sent the first man on the moon. The Apollo missions are the largest and most well known explorations that NASA has conducted. Ever since we reached this new high, our curiosity of space has grown even bigger.
