In The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate in chapter 16 the city of Fentress, Texas gets a telephone line that connects them to the state capitol of Austin, Texas which is approximately 45 miles away. This is a huge change for the residents of Fentress because they are finally able to communicate to another town without having to drive there. The telephone line is a sign that the city of Fentress is finally evolving to become a more modern city even though they are taking more time than the larger cities. The quote is saying that not all cities can evolve at the same time and that some of them may take more time than others, and the cities that do not evolve or modernize will become extinct. In chapter 16 Fentress gets a telephone line and the city
Cyntoia Brown is a 16 years old girl sentenced to life in prison for killing a man named Johnny Allen. Brown reasoning for killing the man was because she felt that he was going to kill her because of the way he was acting and the guns that he owned was visible on the bed. In addition, she knew that if he was to kill her, she did not have a gun and there was no way that her family would ever know what happened to her. Some background about this girl Cyntoia Brown was that when she was born, not even two years later her mother Georgina Mitchell gave her up for adoption due to her drug and alcohol problems. Brown has experienced some hardship growing up and has done all sorts of things to feel wanted and accepted. She was found guilty, tried
At the start of this experiment we were required to obtain a set of four Wisconsin Fast Plants, which are genetically, known as Brassica rapa. These plants have been, “originally selected under continuous fluorescent light to grow and reproduce quickly for research purposes, these petite, fast-growing plants have been used for teaching biology concepts” (Wisconsin Fast Plants). These four pots that contain our plants will be under our watch for the next 16 weeks where we will show our results at the end of the semester.
The creation of cities helped people in that time frame settle down into one specific place. Document C shows roads, homes, and structures in the city. The roads indicate that they were walking around, this most likely means specialization existed by then. Cities were mainly developed to stay in one place because they could just farm to provide food. We set up places to farm and put the animals to work in the new cities too.
What development does the author credit for being most responsible for the growth of cities throughout history?
Finally, after almost a full century(1750-1868), William Alexander Abram writes that conditions have improved and technology was a main factor in freeing space and improving urban life. This reliable journal article written by a historian concludes that after years of little intervention, technology was able to fix the problems presented by
This theory is often referred to as a Concentric Zone Theory.# Burgess believed that as cities expand in size, the development is patterned socially and argued that the city of Chicago could be described in terms of five concentric zones. It was by a competitive process that decided how people were distributed spatially amongst the zones.# The most expensive residential areas were in the outer zones, away from the chaotic atmosphere in the city centre, the pollution caused by factories and the homes of the poor. However, Burgess placed great importance on the zone of transition '. The zone of transition was an area of great social upheaval, which contained deteriorating tenements, often built in the shadow of ageing factories. This zone was described as the least desirable living area and was the focus for the influx of waves of immigrants, as this was the only place the immigrants could afford to reside. This lead to weak family and communal ties which resulted in social disorganisation and it was this disorganisation that was presented as the primary explanation of criminal behaviour.#
Urbanization quickly spread and advanced in the 1800’s. This was due to industrialization. If a factory was built in a town, that town’s population would grow exponentially.
Daphnia magna also commonly known as water fleas are tiny freshwater crustaceans. They are filter feeders, and can survive in culture by eating algae, bacteria, or yeast. They feed plankton and detritus. There are about 1.5-5mm long. Daphnia Magna have a brood chamber where eggs are located. Daphnia magna are located in freshwater areas throughout northern hemisphere and south Africa.
In Natures Metropolis: Chicago and the Great West William Cronon, the author, attempts to enlighten readers on the growth of cities and the relationship they have with the land they are built on. In other words, Cronon’s thesis comes from the belief that there is an observable bond between cities, and the ecosystems under and around them, namely Chicago and the western frontier of 19th century America. We will see that Cronon argues that human construction and taming of Earth’s resources is natural and is in tuned with the surrounding nature, land, and animals. This is accomplished by studying through the frontiers history from the research of journals, articles, and other recorded history of that time. While the information Cronon presented
In order to test the rate of phagocytosis in tetrahymena, the tetrahymena need to ingest particles that are visible under a light microscope. The substance used in this experiment was India ink. India ink is deep black colored ink containing dispersed carbon particles. The trethymena treat the India ink as if it were food and ingest it. There were three concentrations of India ink that were fed to the eukaryotes The percent’s that were used are: 1%, 5% and 10% of India ink. After certain time intervals, the tetrahymena were fixed with a compound called 3% paraformaldehyde (PFA).On the first day six different mixtures of tetrahymena and ink concentrations were made to test which conditions would express the best rate of phagocytosis. The well fed tetrahymena were fed with 1% India ink, the another group was fed 5% India ink, the last group was fed 10% India ink. Then the starved tetrahymena were fed in the same manner as the well-fed tetrahymena. After adding the ink to the microcentrifuge, we prepared a slide for each mixture at the following time intervals 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 20
The second city also selected for this report is located just south of Los Angeles California, the City of Compton founded on May 11, 1888 was the eighth city to be incorporated. A brief history on Compton and its population is that according to the U.S Census Bureau in 2010, the total population size was at 96,455 residents. This number of residents is lower than what was expected to see in California. After further investigation in the website, after five-year span in 2015, the population of Compton raised to 97,955 residents. Although the smaller population growth isn’t what it seems to be like in Arvada Colorado. But in 2016 in Compton California the total population size decreased to 97,550 residents. A decrease in 400 residents within the one year span. Both cities roughly over 1,000 miles apart do share some similarities and differences between them.
Milvertha Hendrinks, 84 is pictured. The look on her face symbolizes anguish. I think she has the blanket because she is cold, and she may not have any clothing other than the blanket. She may have possibly lost everything but that blanket as well. One thing I know about Hurricane Katrina is that according to the CDC, one of their disaster planning goals was to protect older adults, however most of the people who died were the older adults. Ms. Hendricks is an older adult but is outside. The flag blanket is symbolic because it shows strength. Strength that Americans hold, that no matter what happens, we get through it all. We also have strength from those fighting for our country and The Star-Spangled Banner says, “gave proof through
Cyntoia Brown was only a minor when a 24 years old man named, “Cut Throat” sexually abuse and physically beat her and, then forced her into prostitution the age of 16. She was later sentenced to life in prison for shooting the 43 years old, Johnny Mitchell Allen who raped and abuse her. After more than a decade, her case became the most heated topics in America since last year. The question is, was she a victim of violence or guilty of killing the man who raped her?
Throughout history, the evolution of communities and societies has been influenced by the local and global economy. Large cities emerged from vibrant business activity and flow of products and services. For the most part
It is estimated that in the near future, 2 out of 2 people will live in cities. This is due to main reason that people naturally tend to concentrate in areas with desirable conditions. What does the cities offer as to why it is stated that the “cities will be our future”.
