. Does the meaning of this book like the girls having a father in jail stands out to what some children may be going through or is it something that’s very rare in the world today? 2. Can poetry books like this book be something that could help young kids be open about their personal life and help them understand that they’re not alone or could it scare them even more to open up ?
There first time having sex or there first time trying out drugs. Although the drug aspect is a little extreme it does happen in our society and I believe that this book not only shows us how to speak up against the “man” but also how to basically survive. Im not that older than Jim Carroll in the “Basketball Diaries” and to see someone go through something like that and turn out to be a writer is incredible. It shows the readers that we shouldn't stay idly by while we lose ourselves. We should speak up, voice our opinions, be impulsive in trying to get what we want. And one thing this book has taught me is that we have to keep this idea of “counterculture” alive. Like Jim, I too find myself sinking into a hole that I cannot come out of. But instead of drugs my downfall is credit cards. Im only 19 with 3 credit cards and I owe over 3,000 dollars. My mom and dad help me pay it down but I just get so addicted into using it. If I don't have to use my own money, then why not? But I too find myself wanting to be pure again. And it gives me some shred of hope to see that Jim Carroll overcame his downfall and now its time for
With many positives and negatives, the book has different impacts on teens. Having recently studied this novel, I believe this book is
This book was a very good read. It was very eye opening. More than what I expected. It was a very well written book about the hidden lives of young
It definitely was a tear jerker, but it also opened my eyes up to how bad child abuse actually can get. I knew it was bad, but never this bad. There were points where it was hard to continue reading due to that fact I was crying and couldn’t stop. I never know someone could treat a human this badly, especially not a mother treat her son this horrifically. Although it was very sad, it made me realize courage is something you need a lot of at points in your life, and David Pelzer’s courage to not give up and to keep fighting for life in this sick game his mother has created. This showed me that even in the darkest of dark times in your life if you just have a little faith and a lot of courage, anything is possible, and I believe that is the best message that could have been sent by how hard and long he fought. He continued for years to endlessly and relentlessly fight for his life. Determined to not let his mother “win” the game she created. I would absolutely recommend this book to someone. I feel as though I have benefited from reading and I feel as though someone else might too. That would be one more person knowing how brutal and disgusting child abuse can
While reading this book, I had different emotions going through me. I was upset, joy, shocked but mostly angry. Why mostly angry? Anger was one of the main emotions that came to me while reading this book because how can a father sell off his daughter to a man three times age. I get that’s very common in their culture but to me that seems morally wrong. Upset was another main emotion because of the abuse she went through with her ‘husband’ as with his family. Me reading about the constant physical abuse and the rape Nujood went through had me in tears when reading. It made me think about how lucky we, children living in the United States don’t suffer the way Nujood did growing up. Lastly, the emotions of shocked and joy came together when
Of course, the world today isn’t the best but it is nowhere near what they had to go through. Many people think that when their crush doesn’t like them or that they can’t have a cookie for dinner then it’s the worst possible state to be in, of course that’s a huge exaggeration, but it’s true. Reading this book at a younger age level wouldn’t be the best idea which is why waiting until high school is the way to go, specifically due to the more mature content in the book. However, this book is truly amazing and shall stick with the reader for a long time, if not for the rest of their
So I read the book Tex and its about a 14 year old boy who lost his mom to pneumonia. His dad is on a trip to the east and was suppose to be back a couple months ago. Him and his brother rely on each other they have no one else in there life. They do not get along very good but they know they only have each other. This book is a good one for those kids who are always fighting with there older siblings or maybe dont talk to them. It reveals the truth about a lot of things. That are fought about on a regular basis at home.
I think the author writes this book to inform us on more of what happen during those times, how they went through it, and show how they really felt. In the beginning of the book the authors state that “Everybody knows an injustice was done. How many know what actually went on inside?”(ix). That’s why I think the author wrote this book to show more of the emotional damages that was caused to them and other families possibly like there’s. They feel like there side of the story must be heard and they can be the voice for families just like there’s.
In Anne Bradstreet’s poem, “The Author to Her Book”, Anne is worried about what people will think about her book. Anne believes the book is her child and she must protect it from the outside. In the poem Anne describes her “child” through metaphors, imagery and tone. Anne’s tone at the beginning of the story changes toward the end as she becomes poor and has to send her “child” out into the world.
This novel is based on the life of a sixteen year old illiterate girl named Claireece Precious Jones. She was kicked out of her alternative school due to the administrators finding out about her second pregnancy. You may ask, “Who is the father? She is barely sixteen!” Answer is, her father. Her father left Claireece's mother for his own daughter. That resulted in her mother being furious which lead to an abusive relationship with her daughter.. Despite the fact that her life has been muddled, she looks on the positive side and tries to go on hoping to have a brighter future. Along the way she makes some friends
For this paper, I decided to look at a poem instead of a song. The poem I decided to analyze is a narrative called The Butter Battle Book, written by Dr. Seuss. But Tristan, Dr. Seuss is a children's author, what is there to analyze. Well, if you have read this poem, then you would know that while it is marketed to kids, there is a very mature adult message, so hear me out. The Butter Battle Book is one of the more obscure Dr. Seuss titles, so odds are you didn't grow up reading this. If you have read this, then you would know why this is not a house hold classic, like Horton Hears a Who or The Lorax.
Jessica's poem alludes to other stories that impact the youth and will affect them later in life. The
Never has there ever been a more novel with so much gender inequality. The inequality is taken to a completely different level, girls and guys should be equal in all areas. They should not be treated differently in any manner, but the guys are super, girls are considered objects to men, and girls have to rely on their man for whatever they wanted.
One thing that struck me was the abuse to Heathcliff at home. This took place once Mr. Earnshaw had died, and once Hindley Earnshaw became the owner of the home. Bitter hatred for Heathcliff due to the past favoritism by his father, made Hindley abusive to Heathcliff as revenge. I hear all the time about people that go through similar aspects of this part of the book. Abuse in the home is a serious problem in our society and I feel that this represents that. A person (Heathcliff), was abused because of a reason they could not control (Favoritism.) Showing what people go through can help bring awareness to the problem and help the fight to end abuse.
They are written from the children's perspective in a humorous way. Every child who reads this book will immediately relate to most of the situations described in the poems since they show familiar childhood experiences and interesting topics. Some of the poems have a rhyming pattern, others are written in free style. Seven of them are written in the form of mini-plays. Some poems are several pages long ('Voices from the Lost and Found') and some others are composed of only one verse (Herstory = Her Story).
