According to the authors, recent studies have shown that there is another compound in marijuana that is increasing the attention of both scientists and medical marijuana providers known as cannabidiol, or CBD. CBD is not an intoxicating product, and does not produce a high when alone, but some researchers claim it may calm the anxiety produced by THC. Some research suggests that marijuana with a better balance between CBD and THC is less risky than the high-THC, low-CBD strains that now dominate the upper end of the marijuana market (Caulkin 9). With scientists discovering the new compound CBD, it makes them more interested in doing further research in order to discover more roles of other compounds
The cannabis plant contains over 85 cannabinoids, with tertahydro-cannibinol (THC), the principal psychoactive compound and Cannabidiol (CBD) forming the largest constituent. According to the website Medical Marijuana Inc, CBD or Cannabidiol Hemp Oil is derived from high CBD, low THC hemp plant. Since hemp oil only contains only a small trace of THC, it is considered a non-psychotic product. Hemp oil works by interacting with the body through the endocannabinoid system or the endogenous cannabinoid system. The system contains millions of cannabinoid receptor sites located around the Central Nervous System (CNS), immune system and the brain. The systems plays an important role of regulating the body’s homeostasis or state of balance by impacting functionalities such as hormone balance, sleep, mood, immune response, appetite and pain.
Cannabis is a plant that has been around for 38-million-years (Heilig, S., 2011). Before the 20th century cannabis had been used in a multitude of ways, one of which included medicinal practices. Up until the 1940’s Cannabis was listed in America’s pharmacopeia (Heilig, S., 2011). According to historical records, it was used for medicinal purposes dating back to 2800 BCE (Heilig, S., 2011). The tops, or flower of the plant are used for medicine or as a relaxant. The stocks also known as hemp, can be used in a variety of ways. Hemp is a renewable energy source that has the potential to replace fossil fuels without causing harm to the environment as it is biodegradable (Heilig, S., 2011). As well, hemp could be used for raw material to create paper and this could help end deforestation (Heilig, S., 2011). Not only paper, but it has the ability to replace plastic bags and styrofoam; this would be known as a hemp based cellophane (Heilig, S., 2011). Examining the plant further, cannabis seeds are a complete high protein and vegetarian food for humans, as well as livestock or poultry (Heilig, S., 2011). Hemp seed oil has the exact ratio (3:1) of essential fatty acids omega 6 and

According to LEARN’s Prohbtd video, “CBD & THC are two cannabinoids of more than a hundred such chemical compounds found in the cannabis plant.” (LEARN) It is interesting to see more and more videos and other educational materials being introduced in regards to how beneficial cannabinoids are to the human body. Many people have conditions that would be benefitted by the continuous study of cannabinoids. ‘THC or Tetrahydrocannabinol is the feel good or high feeling portion of the plant and CBD or Cannabidiol is the medical part of the plant. The CBD is the part that researchers are trying to implement for use for individuals different medical conditions. We all have an endocannabinoid system that helps to keep us healthy and balanced biologically.’
The cannabinoid cannabidiol, or CBD as it is often called, has gradually become more popular as an increasing number of studies are pointing to the medicinal benefits of the cannabis compound in treating a variety of ailments. Cannabidiol is a non-psychoactive compound that does not cause a high, as is common with cannabis compound tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Conventional medicine is generally limited in providing 100% protection, amelioration, or cure in the treatment of a disease. Cannabis provides an alternative treatment option where medicines have failed in effectively treating diseases such as cerebral malaria. Studies have demonstrated that CBD has a neuroprotective effect and could prevent the development of neurological symptoms associated
Studies in the past few years have shown that medical marijuana would be incredibly beneficial to those battling several different kinds of medical conditions. The term medical marijuana refers to utilizing the “whole, unprocessed marijuana plant or its basic extracts” to treat or suppress the symptoms of certain medical conditions (National Institute “Marijuana as Medicine”). Two FDA-approved medications have emerged out of the scientific study of cannabinoids, the chemicals in marijuana. These medications “contain cannabinoid chemicals in pill form,” and with more research, more medications will be formulated (National Institute “Marijuana as Medicine”). From the marijuana plant, THC and CBD are the two main cannabinoid medical interests. The benefits from THC are that it reduces nausea caused from certain illnesses and increases appetite, and decreases pain, inflammation, and muscle control problems. CBD, unlike THC, “is a cannabinoid that [does not] make people high.” Research on CBD suggests that CBD may be beneficial to those battling with pain and inflammation, epileptic seizures, and mental illnesses and addictions (National Institute “Marijuana as Medicine”). Multiple medical conditions such as anxiety, epilepsy, Parkinson’s Disease, glaucoma, arthritis, Crohn's Disease, and chronic pain can all be treated by cannabis.
THC or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the most active and abundant cannabinoid in marijuana. It is the reason for the “high” that everyone thinks of when they hear about marijuana. THC has this “psychoactive” effect because it stimulates the CB1 receptors, this results in the stereotypical “high.” THC is not only there to produce a high, in fact, most people don’t realize that it also stimulates the CB2 receptors as well, this in turn is what produces the relaxed therapeutic effects. THC is also known to help manage nausea, promoting appetite, aiding the sleep process, and relieve pain (Health Value of THC). There are many false accusations about marijuana that have been spread over the years, but many medical professionals and even scientific evidence is present that back up the medical uses that marijuana can provide.
However, there is interest in the marijuana chemical cannabidiol (CBD) to treat certain conditions such as childhood epilepsy, a disorder that causes a child to have violent seizures. Therefore, scientists have been specially breeding marijuana plants and making CBD in oil form for treatment purposes. These drugs may be less desirable to recreational users because they are not
