The story “Car Crash while Hitchhiking” seems like a story about a man who hallucinates while on drugs, but it has a far deeper meaning. The narrator is reliving a personal experience in his head. The car crash that he is in reminds him of his family who died in a tragic accident. This analysis will show this by using examples of the setting, emotion, memory, and “medicine”.
The majority of this story happened in the past which is what makes it memory-like. The setting of this story changes as time progresses; he travels from state to state, car to car. The only thing that remains constant is the weather. Weather is used throughout the story and plays a significant role in making this a memory. He mentions rains throughout the story; “I rose up sopping wet from sleeping under the pouring rain”(pg 3) “The downpour raked the asphalt and gurgled in the ruts”(pg 3) “Then, in the dark, I didn’t see the storm gathering”(pg 5) “.....just as it began to rain”(pg 5) “the family….splashed along through the rain”(pg 6). He even compares blood to rain, “human blood flew around the car and rained down on my head”(pg 6). This weather could be seen literally as rain or as insight as to what the narrator is feeling. Rain often depicts emotion as dreary, sad, and depressing. This weather in the story helps to set the mood and show what the character is feeling inside.
The location in the story is always changing. He is a hitchhiker so he travels car-to-car. Two locations in the story
In the short story “On the Rainy River” by Tim O’Brien he has a way of portraying certain events with great imagery. He uses this imagery to affect the overall tone of the story. O’Brien shows examples of this from receiving his draft letter, his place of work, and describing what he sees throughout his journeys. The day that O’Brien got his draft letter helps to set the tone in the beginning.
Flashback is one literary element that plays a considerable role in the making of “On the Sidewalk Bleeding”. While Andy was on the pavement with his life slowly seeping out of him, he awakened the old feeling of great bliss from a new title, a new jacket. “He could remember when the Royals had taken him”(Hunter 6). This is a fantastic example of a flashback, Andy pondered the feeling of apotheosis, but to his disadvantage, the contentment would not last. In the end, that title will always lead to grief and melancholy. Then continued to think about his life even more. Andy
The rain is the key of the story making everything feel sad, nervous and curious. The author tries to create as horrific a setting as possible. In the quote, “March rain drilling his jacket and drilling his body and washing away the blood that poured from his open wound.” makes me feel spooked. I can imagine a person lying on his side with blood spilling out, washing away by the rain creating a red puddle. For example, if Andy was lying in a field of grasses, with no clouds, clear blue sky and the sun brightly shining, I will would not feel as frightened reading the story. The rain was also a good thing as it helped Andy remember the good moments in his life, in the lines, “The rain was soothing somehow”, “Rain is sweet, I'm Andy” these lines tell me Andy is realising he’s dying that’s when he remembers the time he danced in the rain with Laura. He wants to forget about the gang ‘Royal’ but only think of Laura in the last few moments before dying. In these moments time seems slow and painful because the rhythm of the rain, there Andy’s having regrets about joining the gang who cost him his life. He thinks about how young he was and the life he wanted to live in the future. His whole face and body are hot but it’s cooled by the raindrops symbolising how much Andy loves the rain and thinks it’s soothing thing washing away his blood and accepting he’s dying
One of the first items the author states is that all symbolism is intentional, there are no accidents when it comes to analyzing famous literature. He describes certain authors like James Joyce and T.S. Elliot as “intentionalists” or writers who purposely try to control every part of the story through symbolism. The author Thomas Foster teaches us never to overlook anything in a novel even if it be little things like the color shirt they are wearing or what the weather is like outside. Building more off the last statement, precipitation, whilst being a little detail added into a story, holds a lot of important roles in moving the story along and even providing hardships for characters to overcome. Even more than that though, he says “It’s never just rain”, rain provides as a symbol in the story so that if someone is in the rain it’s almost as if they are being cleansed.
What do you get when you mix drugs, a man named Fuckhead, and drama? A Denis Johnson story. Drama is a prominent and key aspect that appears in all of Johnson’s work. Johnson’s work demonstrates various uses of multiple techniques and ideas that young writers can understand and apply to their own work.
In the chapter “On the Rainy River”, the title itself expresses sadness, grief, and or pain because rain displays emotions and the mood feelings. In the beginning of the chapter, he was as an innocent young
“I have walked out in rain -- and back in rain.” from “Acquainted with the Night” shows the depression of the character because most of us relate to rain as an emotional moment and makes us feel vulnerable. When it rains, the whole atmosphere becomes very gloomy and sad, and the author is trying to express the characters sadness.
This time I will be talking about the tone. The overall tone is supposed to be ominous as shown by the storm mainly. Generally a stormy background is supposed to cause the image in the reader's head that it is gloomy and scary. It almost is there like you can’t see what is happening, like anything could sneak up on you. In a storm you can’t hear what is creeping up you cause the sound of the rain covers it and you never know
The novel “The Story of Tom Brennan” by J.C Burke demonstrates how a tragedy such as Daniel’s car accident can cause ripple effects. A tragedy is an unexpected event the leads to suffering and unhappiness, whereas a ripple effect means how one thing can lead to another. The novel shows how this accident affected the town of Mumbilli, the Brennan family and more specifically Daniel Brennan and Tom Brennan. This essay will explore how this tragedy affected Tom Brennan, Daniel Brennan and the rest of the Brennan family.
In How To Read Literature Like A Professor, by Thomas C. Foster, the main purpose is to show readers how to go into depth with the meaning of things seen or talked about when reading literature. It highlights symbols in texts and shows how every single thing can be significant. It also talks about literary sources like greek mythology, the Bible, Children text, and Shakespeare (which he refers back to a lot ), that many stories use to form their plots or quests. The book talks about a topic and then gives the reader and example passage to refer to when talking about that that specific subject. For example, when talking about violence in Chapter 11, Foster analysis Robert Frost’s violent poem called “Out, Out-” and it’s true meaning.
Getting in a car accident is an unnerving thing. You never know what can happen and if your lucky you might see it coming. Well as often as these accidents occur, it happened to Spencer and I on one fateful summer evening.
In the short story “The Half-Skinned Steer”, author Annie Proulx sets forth a tale about an older gentleman, named Mero who is returning to his childhood home and ranch for his brother’s funeral. For the majority of the story, the tale takes place on the road while Mero is traveling from Massachusetts to his hometown in Wyoming. Throughout the story, Mero reflects back on life events that had happened to him. Mero is challenged by these memories, as they easily affect his thoughts and actions, thus changing his life forever.
The type of weather recalled reflects how that character felt about Santiago. Placida Linero specifically felt sorrow and Colonel Aponte felt guilt; both shown through their description of rainy weather. Most characters that were interviewed by the narrator recalled the weather the day Santiago died providing details and insight on what they personally thought about the gruesome event. The narrator recalls,
“We have to get them out of there!” I heard voices yelling out in the distance, but was to lightheaded to know where they were coming from.
Life is unpredictable and an accident can happen anytime. on our way back home from church my dad was driving a black 2012 Toyota Highlander, which is a family car that seven people can ride in it. My younger brother, Taw Nay Gay, and I were sitting on the seat behind the driver seat by the door. My other two younger brothers, Gay Nay Soe and Soe K Maw, sat in the seat behind me, and my mom sat in the front passenger seat. For the first time a nineteen year old girl like me started to believe that I had a reason to live and my life could be taken away anytime. This happened on October first 2017, 7:30 pm when we got into a car accident by the traffic lights intersection. Three cars were damaged, but everyone in the cars were fine.
