Career Development A responsible professional will always be prepared for the next career opportunity. I have always made it a priority to keep my resume updated and to stay proactive in considering my next career move. New experiences, education, achievements, and networking relationships present opportunities for resume improvement. Staying current on external job listings and networking internally are two ways to ensure that I do not miss out on an opportunity. In addition, interview practice is invaluable in improving body language and in anticipating and preparing for difficult questions. In my experience, the prepared candidate will always have an edge. The Job Search The job search was helpful in confirming my current career strategy and brainstorming new approaches after I graduate. First, I found the suggestion of setting a specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and trackable (S.M.A.R.T) goal to be extremely helpful. One of the challenges that I face is that Eugene, OR, is not a large city and the healthcare opportunities are limited. I already work for Peacehealth, the largest healthcare organization in Eugene. For this reason, I need to be patient and careful in my job search since our family is planning on staying here. My current S.M.A.R.T goal is to find an operations manager, program manager, director, or administrator opportunity at Peacehealth that challenges me with more responsibility, pays at least $10k more per year, and offers continued
For the past 3 years, I have been trying to get a position in the hospital, but without medical experience and education, I was unable to achieve this. My life ambition is to work as a resource manager, patient relation specialist or work in an area that assist or coordinated patient healthcare needs. Eventually with time and experience, I would like to be a director in one of these areas. My passion is to assist patient receive quality healthcare and treatment options they need. In addition, down the road after I have gained valuable administrative skills I would like to open a small home for pregnant girls. I feel with the experience working in the hospital and the education I have received I will be able to accomplish this. In which to expedite these goals I will be conducting informational interviews and job shadowing to hone in what skills I need to be successful in my new career. After discussing future’s plan with Amanda, she discussed her future plans of becoming Human Resources Director in ten years. Career development and planning serves five essential purpose: encourage, develop new skills, alleviate plateauing, satisfy employment, and increase employment. My ultimate goal when developing a model a career planning for Amanda, I would want to use the Waterloo University Model. I would want to model each essential factors of the key points stages. Through my research I have found multiple jobs that interest me, but there are two that stick out the most: Psychosocial Rehabilitation Specialist and Psychiatric Technician. Before researching, I had no idea about these jobs, but now I know good deal about them. After researching, I found out in what settings people in these positions work, how much they make on average annually, what their job entitles, what the education requirements are, what the growth rates for these occupations are. The jobs’ settings are very similar, but their salaries and duties are very different. I was able to find that if one just looks at the average, annual wage for each occupation, Psychiatric Technicians make about $28,000 while Psychosocial Rehabilitation Specialists make about $34,000. The growth rate for Rehabilitation Counselors, in general, is faster than Psychiatric Technicians, but only by four percent. The overall tasks of each occupation, however, differ greatly from each other.
1.What is one short term goal you have on your agenda to achieve in the next couple of weeks to a month?
I am Shayla Padgett and I am an Assessment and Career Exploration Specialist/Job Preparedness Instructor at South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation. My interest in rehabilitation was accidental, and my own need for a Career Exploration Specialist will be obvious.
The overall goal of this TRANSFORM K12 Mentored Career Development Award is to develop expertise to pursue the study of memory, autonomic, and olfactory deficits in the preclinical and early stage of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) by integrating the disciplines of electroencephalogram (EEG), autonomic nervous system (ANS) and central olfactory nervous system assessments, and clinical trials in order to successfully compete for federal funding using the K or R mechanisms.
In these four years of attending UWSP, I plan on majoring in Wildlife ecology and management. I was always a crazy animal lover when I was little, because I grew up on a farm. But when I went to my cabin or uncles land with my parents we always saw bears, porcupines, snakes, raccoons etc. I got to see these animals in their different habitats, which was awesome. I thought for a bit that what would be more awesome than just seeing these wildlife animals, would be to work hands on with them and their environment they live in. With this major I hope I am able to get into either a wildlife biology research facility or even an animal rehabilitation facility.
There comes a time in life where individuals have to leave school to join the world of work whereby they will work their way up to the top. This is where career development comes into place. Career development is defined as progress through various stages in a career (Schreuder & Coetzee,2011). These are stages one goes through in order to mature in a career and for development to even exist, one has to start with making a career choice then developing it .A career choice can be defined as the relation between people’s personality types and their different occupational environment in which they work in.
Unfortunately, the results of the career assessment surveys on www2.careercruising.com did not place my desired career as one of the careers it thought I would be interested in. Another thing the career assessments told me I was primarily a visual learner, but I had a secondary preference for tactile learning as well. However, it gave me a career that correlates with the subject I want to teach as my career, which happens to be mathematics (career: mathematician). This choice can be the match for lighting the fuse for the rocket that is my career path so I can blast off with my career in the future. However, I was a bit disappointed that these surveys did not land me with a “teaching” job, but one thing I can agree on is the fact that it landed me with a math-related career, because math is my favorite subject in school overall. Even so, these results might help me pursue my dream of becoming a middle-school math teacher if I work hard enough. In conclusion, even though some of these surveys’ results don’t match my interests, I can still work hard to prove them otherwise.
In this essay I will be discussing similarities and differences, connections between work skills and school skills I saw while onsite at both of my job shadows. I will also be comparing my career exploration research to the experiences I had onsite at both job shadows. Lastly, I will asses if one of these two occupations would be a good match for me.
Social Work is a profession concerned with helping individuals, families, groups and communities to enhance their individual and collective well-being. I chose to seek a degree in this field because I find this to be a very rewarding career choice. To obtain a degree in a career that essentially makes a difference in people’s lives is extremely important to me. I have worked as a medical assistant for over 10 years, and although I love my job I would like to work closer with the people that I serve. I realize from working with people with intellectual disabilities that my passion lies with helping and assisting individuals. It takes a special person to work in social services because this is a field where advocating and assisting are a forte. I would like to obtain my Bachelors of Art in Social Work and work with children. After, I have worked in the field for at least a year I would like to continue postgraduate studies in lure of earning my master’s in social work. My ultimate goal is to obtain both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in social work and specialize in case management assisting both children and veterans.
It has been 10 years passed since last time I entered in college as a freshman, and now, at the end of 2017, I decide to go back to college for pursuing a new major and reaching a new objective of career path. All of these will start from Fullerton College.
This lesson mainly addressed aspects related to career development. This lesson encourages students to discover their academic and personal strengths, their skillsets, and their interests. Students then take those concepts and apply them to career exploration. They are able to link their strengths, preferences, and abilities to potential future career paths. Some of the specific aspects of career development that I addressed include applying planning and career exploration in setting and obtaining lifelong career goals, applying necessary skills for career readiness and success, and teaching students where and how to obtain information about post-secondary options. In this lesson students are encouraged to apply decision making skills to place different careers into the appropriate career fields. In doing so, they are also encouraged to begin thinking about careers that are of interest to them and what career goals they have for themselves. They will be given resources in order to continue career exploration outside of the classroom. While I do not expect sixth graders to fully decide their career path, it is my firm belief that it is never too early to get students thinking about careers and having them set goals in order to obtain the career and future that they desire. I also believe that this unit touches on social and emotional development as well as academic development. This lesson allows the student to collaborate with one another and work in groups as well as in pairs. This promotes relationship building and teamwork. It also allows students to take an inventory of their personal strengths and skillsets. This could boost self-esteem and promotes a sense of self-awareness. Lastly, this unit also encompasses academic development. Students will understand that good grades and academic success are key elements to obtaining the career that they wish to have. By being academically successful, this will allow them greater options and opportunity post high school graduation.
My career path was rerouted after the birth to my son. I was managing a 24-hour Alarm Monitoring Call Center with two years of college education in Psychology. Due to an inconsistent work schedule and difficulty locating Psychology courses that worked around my schedule, I decided to change my career path to Business Management, since I already had nearly 8 years experience in supervision and management. My mentor introduced me and made me familiar with the Dictionary of Occupational (DOT) following high school. The DOT is comprised of all occupations and job titles, salary ranges, responsibilities, and industries (Berry, 2003). As I prepared for my new journey, I evaluated my decision, researched, planned, applied for new occupations that interest me, and prepared for my new career in Management.
