Section A Introduction: Psychiatry
For this investigation I have chosen to conduct research into the medical field of Psychiatry. Psychiatry is considered to be one of the most difficult occupations to work in and thus entry into the field of Psychiatry is both difficult and challenging. In Psychiatry there is a large breakdown of additional specialist fields, all of which require a large amount of study to perform well in. In the past 5 years the field of psychiatry has had an employment percentage decline of 20.1 percent and is expected to decrease by an even larger amount within another 3 years (2017), (source; Open University’s Australia).
Part 1- Selection and research:

The lowest Tertiary score reuired to enter one of these subjects is 70; this will give you acess to a bachelors of psychological science at almost any university in Australia. To achieve an ATAR score you will need to pass year 12 during your schooling life with a high C or low B across all of your subjects (depending on subject scaling). A bachelors of Psychological science has no prerequisite subjects and does assume any previous knowledge. The Psychological Science course will take 4 years, full time, to complete. Once this degree has been obtained you will need to apply for a masters degree of Psychological science. You will need to have completed your bachelors degree of Psychological scince before applyinf for this course, which will take 2 years to complete. After university study has been completed you must apply to a recognised medical school within Australia that offers a Psychiatry course, this will take 4 years to complete, two of which are a residency at a Psychiatry clinic were you will obtain work expleriance. It should be noted that all medical schools are very hard to obtgain admission into, due to the sheer amount of applicants. This means that it may take years to be accepted into the college. To become a psychiatrist you must be very commited to the field of work, as it will take 10 years of study to become one, which may become wasted time if the oerson is not commited. Job
Then earn a Doctoral degree as a Doctor of Psychology or Psy.D that requires 2-3 of advanced coursework and a 1-3 years dissertation. It is important for this program to be accredited by the American Psychological Association. This is also the time to begin some type of experience by taking a 1-year full-time internship. Next, one would have to complete a Post-doctoral Internship which is a “ placement to gain the experiences necessary for a license” (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015, pg.1). After this it is time to obtain your License by passing the examination for Professional Practice of Psychology and depending on what state you live in, an ethics examination as well. One might think their almost to the finish line but after this there is still education requirements needed like “20 hours of continuing education per year, or 40 hours every two years” (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2015, pg.1). Finally obtain a Specialty Certification if the psychologist has a specific focus
There is a predicted 600 job outlook between now and 2020. This is a highly positive outlook for a very high paying job. The expected growth rate is approximately 12% annually, which is higher than the average annual growth. The growth rate is also predicted from now until 2020. There are some positives and negatives for a career in psychiatry. One positive is that the psychiatrist is able to prescribe medicine, meaning the salary for the job is higher than most. Another positive is that the psychiatrist is able to schedule their own hours, and make their own timetables. One negative is that in order to prescribe the medicine, someone who wants to be a psychiatrist needs to go to medical school, which costs a lot of time and money. Another negative is that many people are interested in the field of psychology, meaning there will be less jobs out of college. Psychiatrists go through a set daily routine, with few wavering moments in that schedule. Through this fixed routine, the psychiatrist is able to form solid bonds with their patients through, usually weekly, talks with these patients. Psychiatrists use brain scans, genetics and psycho-pharmacology to diagnose and treat mental illnesses and cognitive disorders. Between talking to their patients, and using the tests and scans, psychiatrists are able to accurately diagnose and treat most types of mental illnesses and cognitive
The study of the mind, psychiatry, has in the last few years struck an interest within me. I wonder why we react differently when we face the same obstacles. For example, families with several children, raised by the same parents and in the same environment, yet turn out to be completely different individuals, sometimes very disturbed. The how, why and where of it all interests me. My immediate goal is to get my diploma and find out who I really am and what my soul desire truly is. I realize I have a deep desire to be of service to others. This is not a skill however, it's just me. I do feel one of my strongest skills is my artistic ability. I have a taste for and enjoy a diverse selection of movies, music, and reading material. I enjoy
Clinical psychology is just one of the many subfields that psychology has to offer. Those who choose to enter clinical psychology aim to help people with addiction, emotional stress, mental illness, or any other type of mental problems. Knowing what a clinical psychologist does in their practice is important in understanding their profession. A clinical psychologist's education is the most prominent part of their career; without it, they cannot be considered a psychologist. The process and requirements of employment for psychologists are scattered, varying from state to state, as well as their salary and where they may be employed. The future and growth of clinical psychology can only be
Mental Health Counselor is the career I have decided to go for. It took me forever and a lot of thinking to decide exactly what I want to do with my life. I have dealt with depression, anxiety, self harming all within myself. I also dealt with watching my father abuse alcohol, and getting cancer and passing. My daughter is ADHD, ODD and suffers with anxiety. I also work in a group home taking care of mentally challenged people. Altogether I've dealt with a lot and I think experiencing everything I have, would make me understand and be a good mental health counselor.
To get board certified, completing the needed education, having a license to practice psychiatry, and completing the residency will qualify someone to sit for examination. A psychiatrist needs to love to help people, solving problems, and science. They solve patient’s problems everyday and talk them through it. Once a person is ready to start looking for a job, they will have to go through an interview process. The interview questions vary from scenarios to personal questions and questions about medications. There are also questions about the field in general. Getting the correct education, completing a residency, becoming licensed and certified, and passing the job interview are the essential things that need to be done to become a psychiatrist.
Psychology is usually a really enormous subject matter. They are a lot of numerous career fields of therapy. Therapy being a scholarly analyze with the brain as well as actions goes towards Historic Greeks. There is also proof of subconscious believed within ancient Egypt. Psychology seemed to be the branch of philosophy until the 1870s, whenever the idea created just as one separate medical discipline. Psychology edges with a few other career fields as well as physiology, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, sociology, anthropology, along with philosophy as well as other pieces of the humanities. According to the American Psychological Association (APA) website “Psychologists who provide clinical or counseling services assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders. They integrate the science of psychology and the treatment of complex human problems with the intention of promoting change.” ("Pursuing A Career In Clinical Or Counseling Psychology", 2014).) In the simplest terms, “the study of individuals, by observation or experimentation, with the intention of promoting change.” (Compas, Bruce, & Gotlib, 2002) Clinical psychologist careers vary in industries such as research, integrated health care, teaching, public policy and professional practice. Some clinical psychologists work exclusively on specific mental, emotional, and behavioral issues. Relationship conflict and conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder and addiction are a few examples of areas of specialization for a clinical psychologist. According to the APA website (2014), in order to become a clinical psychologist the journey begins with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Next the student must obtain a graduate degree. Each graduate program determines its own entrance requirements. Some doctoral programs require their applicants to have a master’s degree in psychology. Other people enter doctoral programs with only a bachelor’s degree. Most doctoral degrees take five to seven years to complete. You must also
In all honestly, there are various academic pathways to pursuing a career in the field of mental health and some, not all, pathways are better suited for a particular bachelors. One primary example is social work. The masters program in social work is the only program that allows students to transfer a full year's worth of credits from their bachelors in social work [ONLY]. Suggesting a bachelors in psychology or another mental health pathway would lead to an additional year of study. Psychiatry is another good example that requires a pathway in pre-medicine. These are good examples that the field of mental health requires NOT one pathway but various pathways.
At the same time my mental illnesses were beginning to materialize. Once I realized something was wrong and had been officially diagnosed, I began to develop and intense interest in the human mind. Last semester I took a concurrent general psychology class. By the end of the first week, I knew that there was no other profession for me. After intense research and planning, I finally made the decision to major in psychiatry. This will allow me to work in a career field that will not only hold my interest, but will provide me with an atmosphere that will satisfy my need to help others.
When I first started my college journey I initially majored in Biology. Not knowing what I wanted to do, I was influenced by my advisor to enter the biology field. After my third year, I decided not to pursue biology anymore, and that’s when I discovered my passion for the Psychology field. After receiving my undergrad in psychology, I knew that I wanted to get my masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, but I had no idea of how broad this area is. This week assignment granted me the opportunity to interview someone who has been in this profession for 25 plus years who has worked in all sectors when it comes to mental health counseling. It allowed me to learn the pros and cons of this field and it even gave me more insight and clarity on exactly what I wanted to do. I found this week assignment to be very informative and I believe it is necessary for anyone that’s interesting in entering in this field. I am grateful for the knowledge and advice that I received during this week assignment.
I want to be a psychologist. I would love to learn all about the way people act, think and feel and at the same time try to help them. I have a very easygoing personality and I love to have fun and laugh. I ask a lot of questions, and I think I am very easy to get along with. Some career goals I have is to finish college, I would like to find a job I want to keep that I could make a career out of, and just take it one day at a time because I have desire to make the right decisions and live a pleasant life.
There are hundreds of different careers in the medical field ranging from neurosurgeons to nurse practitioners. Psychiatry deals specifically with the diagnosis and treatment of mental, behavioral, and emotional ailments. The main purpose of a psychiatrist is to help people coop with issues and stress in their environment that make it difficult to lead a normal and healthy lifestyle. These issues may arise from abuse, addiction, mental disability, disease, or physical injury. It is the psychiatrist’s job to ensure the patient can maintain a healthy attitude and continue to provide for themselves. A Psychiatrist may choose to specialize in many sub classes of mental health including children and adolescents, geriatric psychiatry, addiction,
Psychologists are very important people; they help millions of people with their everyday struggles and problems that they have to deal with. Not only do psychologists help people with problems that they cannot handle on their own, they also are scientists who study human minds and behaviors.
I believe that the answers to the greatest questions and problems in life could be gained through a better understanding of the human mind. Psychology is a study of human behaviors and trying to understand why we do the things we do. Because of this I would be interested in a career in psychology though there are many different career fields within psychology. I would be most interested in a career in health psychology though there’s an extensive learning process. It is important to understand the education or training requirements, skills, and talents needed salary and benefits offered and duties for a particular career when making this decision.
