Career Research Paper: Clinical Psychology

There are many professional pathways within psychology that an individual may apply themselves to for their career. These include: clinical, forensic, health, and educational psychology. The professional career pathway within applied psychology which will be discussed in this essay is the field of clinical psychology. Clinical psychology aims to reduce the amount of psychological distress an individual experiences and enhance the promotion of psychological well-being. Clinical psychologists attend to both mental and physical health problems including addiction, anxiety, depression, learning difficulties and relationship issues in order to help individuals resolve their problems. Clinical psychologists predominantly work within hospitals, mental health groups and the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (Clinical | Careers, 2016).

Health psychology is a diverse career field; psychologists can be employed anywhere from hospitals to research to influencing health care. “Health psychologists… conduct clinical interviews and behavioral assessments. They may also participate in interventions with individuals or groups — for example, programs to help people reduce stress, quit smoking and avoid sedentary behaviors…They may study the causes of health problems and how to prevent them, or explore why certain groups don’t seek care when they need it. Health psychologists have a broad spectrum of people to treat as they treat people with mental disorders and create treatment plans for people; health psychologists need to understand all parts of psychology to provide effective care for their patients because health psychologists research, test people, and help their patients gain skills so they can better take care of themselves.

Having a degree in psychology enabled me to understand my own self and the people around me such as my own family, co workers, and friends. Now that I am pursuing a career in counseling, I am more able to understand human behavior and the reason behind a particular action. I learned the importance of self care. After earning a bachelor's degree, the next goals is to aim after a masters followed by a doctorate degree in either psychology or art of psychology. Moving on to a doctorate degree is somewhat from five to seven years. After investing 12 years into school and training, the future psychologist will then invest into another 2 year internship before being qualified by the state. In contrast to becoming a psychiatrist the credential are to apply for medical school instead. Once this undergraduate degree is completed, attending a graduate school with be the next step. The future psychiatrist will then need to serve a 4 year residency at a hospital. Of course, there are also state exams that are needed to complete the procedure in order to become licensed as a medical doctor.

Ever since I was younger I want to be a police officer. However, my switch to wanting to be an FBI agent happened after I discovered that I will be going to college. Instead of just getting a degree and going to be police officer that I could be without a degree, I decided to use my education for what was worth and to give back on a grander scale. Psychology careers have their drawbacks also. Many in the field report they find dealing with their patients drain them and stress them out. Psychologists must find away to help these individuals, without finding they take the problems of their patients on themselves. The psycholgist's personal and work life must be separate to succeed in this goal.

I selected this career because ever since I was in 8th grade I have been fascinated with how the mind works, especially criminals. I loved watching crime shows and figuring out who the killer was before the “detectives” on the show. Some obvious and widely shared information about this career is that psychologists work closely with many different government agencies and the military to find different criminals, such as terrorists and serial killers. Other known information includes the different psychological tests and therapies that have been done with inmates in various prisons around the world. Clinical psychologist can be found in various setting. On television shows, in the news, in magazines and in other sources of Media. One setting I often see them in is television shows. One show I recently stumbled upon was a television show called Awake. The show has been discontinued but I like it a lot. It is about a man who has lost his wife and his son due to a car accident. He however stills sees them and participates in activities with them. He even has seen new people that are not part of reality (psychologist and detectives he works with.) He goes to this one psychologist who he sees in his dreams and this other psychologist he sees in reality. The show however makes it hard to decipher what are dreams and what is reality. You really get to see the world from his perspective.

As a clinical psychologist, my responsibilities and duties would include: studying and diagnosing mental, emotional, and behavioral problems; treating and helping my clients; and consulting with other trained psychologists on the best way to help the patients.
