Managers within organizations are faced with the challenges daily of making excellent decisions. In everyday life we are challenged in making sound decision, decision that will last for a life time. Folk often wonder after making a decision if it was the right choice, will it affect the people around me, was this a good choice for my family, and will the decision affect them. In order to be an effective manager you have to possess the skill of outstanding decision making skills. In order for one to be successful within their personal life they may also need to possess an understanding of effective decision making. The challenge when working with others to make a decision is that we all have our own methods of coming to a conclusion. The rational decision-making model is comprehensive in the fact that it requires the decision maker to define the problem, identify criteria for making the decision, weight the criteria, develop alternatives, evaluate alternatives and finally select the best alternative (Robbins, S.P., Judge, T.A. 2009). The challenge with utilizing this method is the fact that most of the time in real world situations, facts are either limited or missed, time compression causes an oversight on all potential alternatives and people tend to choose the easier route to make decisions (Robbins, S.P., Judge, T.A., 2009). Intuition is a powerful tool, however it can also lead to quick and potentially bad decisions (Robbins, S.P., Judge, T.A., 2009). Decision-making in the workforce is a process of responsibilities used by upper management to implement, enforce rules, regulations, and maintain a successful environment. Decision-making implemented more effectively by making a plan, thinking it through, accepting more than one opinion and determining what is best. However, decision-making often utilized more effectively by opening doors of opportunities for a suggestion, question, discussion, and feedback. Although, more involvement helps improve understanding, utilize behavior skills and present opportunities for better communication. Everyday life consists of decision-making, the right decision may not always be applied, but ensure room for improvement and opportunity. Individuals approached decision-making in many different ways. As stated by (Jones, Graham, & Bateman, 2006) decision making is a procedure used to recognize a problem, weigh the alternatives and evaluate a solution in which, certain situations will require different approaches to become effective.

In the problem analysis phase of effective decision making, group members should recognize any obstacle that may arise that needs to be improved or changed and determine the characteristics, magnitude, and possible cause(s) of that obstacle confronting them. This phase lays the groundwork for what the group should be prepared for as they work together (Hirokawa & Salazar, 1999 p. 170).After analyzing the problem, the group should then discuss and establish goals and objectives in order to generate proposed solutions of

She makes the decision to stop investing her economic resources in an unfruitful endeavor and sends Wes to military school. The steps she takes resulting in Wes attending military school depicts the five step decision making model process mentioned in our textbook. The decision making model is an outline of steps an individual uses to recognize a problem and determine appropriate solutions for that problem. The steps to the decision making process model are: Recognizing existing needs, Identifying alternatives to meet those needs, evaluating the alternatives, selecting and implementing those alternatives and reflecting on the resulting outcomes (Moore & Asay,2013,p. 8).

It feels as if we rarely have situations with sufficient data to make decisions clear and absolute. Maybe those situations do occur frequently, but because they are obvious, we don’t even register them as decisions. Leadership hinges on effective decision making and judgement calls. That includes gathering information for analysis when available, but also recognizing how not to be caught in analysis paralysis. Effective leaders constantly evaluate the situation, recognize the benefits, risks, and constraints and move forward. Nothing impedes an organization more than inability to commit to a path forward.

Rational decision is a state of being agreeable to reasons. The correct decision is not just reasoned but it is also optimal for solving a problem. Mr Weekes, the operation manager, employed series of analytical steps to review possible outcomes for problems by discussing it with managers to come up withdevise particular courses of action.

The decision making process can also be divided into seven steps, where the first step will basically involve defining the problem. These steps allow for the main issue to be identified, and therefore the manager should make sure that it has been done correctly. After the problem identification stage, we can move forward and identify the limiting factors, and in this the manager should make use of all resources available to do it the best way. Some of the resources include information, time, personnel, equipment and supplies. Using this, managers can be able to identify the factors that might hinder them from achieving their goals.

Strategic thinking is a process-using problem solving skills, creative thinking, and decision-making (Toygar & Akbulut, 2013). This process will be utilized throughout my career as a Healthcare Administrator. In preparation to gaining information to increase my administrative skills, I took a “Mind Tool” quiz to define my method to problem solving. The interpretation of the assessment indicated a 67-90, which determine that I revealed an excellent approach to management. This report will outline what skills I will utilize to increase my consciousness and knowledge of problem solving to enhance my decision-making technique.

Decisions are shared between all employees utilizing the rational decision-making model. Greenleaf, R. K. (1998) noted, servant-leadership advocates a group-oriented approach to analysis and decision making as a means of strengthening institutions and of improving society” (p. 9). As noted by Hellriegel, Jackson and Slocum (2008) “The rational model consists of seven steps, defining and diagnosing the problem, setting goals, searching for alternative solutions, comparing and evaluating alternative solutions, choosing among alternatives, implementing the solution and follow up. The model prescribes a set of phases that individuals or teams should follow to increase the likelihood that their decisions will be logical and optimal” (p. 266). The management team takes the responsibility for defining the problem. The management team and employees participate in setting goals, searching for solutions, comparing alternatives, and choosing alternative solutions. The makeup of the implementation team depends on the tasks and expertise required to successfully implement the solution.

There are many different strategies that good problem solvers use to solve a problem. The steps of the problem solving process are systematic and organized. First, take your time and identify the problem very carefully. Do the research, and become informed about your subject. Few good problem solvers solve problems fast. From a managerial point of view, taking a decision to solve problems is not an easy task. The problem solving process in organisations is often led by uncertainty and vagueness, combined with the managers’ difficulties in developing an appropriate problem definition, inadequate method selection or application, lack of knowledge, or various other internal and external factors (Szarucki, 2013).
