Background Information

Sabrina is a seven-year old girl. She is in Primary Two this year. Both her parents are teachers in a primary school and she has a younger sister who is two years younger than her. Sabrina’s maternal grandparents lived with her. Her grandfather passed away two years ago. Then her grandmother passed away later that same year. Sabrina was very close to her grandmother and her death affected her badly. She would still ask for her grandmother when she was in Primary One and was not able to accept her death. Sabrina was referred to the school counselor late in 2013 as her parents had to be persuaded to give their consent. The counselor started having sessions with her this year.
Sabrina’s mother gave birth to a boy in January 2013 and was on maternity and child care leave during the first term of Primary One. In 2013, term two, Sabrina started attending a before and after school care center. During this time, both her parents also enrolled in the open university.

The Problem Since term two, 2013, Sabrina’s uniform often looks as if it is not ironed and sometimes unwashed. She has been handing in homework late or incomplete. She does not ask her teachers or her classmates for any help when she does not understand the lessons and will not volunteer to answer questions. …show more content…

The death of Sabrina’s maternal grandmother affected her deeply. She had formed a close relationship with her as she was her primary caregiver. Her parents are not able to provide the same level of care as her grandmother due to their work and study commitments. Sabrina compares herself to her younger sister and feels that she is less intelligent.
