Syracuse University is a basketball school. It’s a big part of our campus culture, and many SU students love to play the game. With this in mind, we sought out to create a fundraising campaign for the PATHE initiative that provides students with a way to enjoy themselves while giving aid to young scholars seeking a path to college. Hoops for Higher Education is an event that will take place in the Flanagan Gymnasium. This event will be held on an afternoon on a weekend where students will have more free time on their hands to attend, and participants of this event will play against each other in a 3 v 3 basketball tournament for a grand prize of $100. Teams will be made up of three players, with an optional fourth additional person who will
The book “Last Shot” shows what a basketball game is really about. It doesn't just show you the game and who wins; It shows you how all the competitors need to prepare immensely to attempt to win. It shows you how the players could throw everything away with their grades or selling team merchandise for a maximum profit. During the read of this book, you are Stevie Thomas, teen writing contest winner. You get to experience the time of your life (at least from his perspective), which is going and reporting at the Men’s Basketball NCAA Tournament Final Four. You discover what the reporters have to go through and maybe what the players are told to do. Basketball is much more than just the game, it’s life.
Many people have an easy road to get a higher education, many don’t because we all come from different culture, society, and social class. Also, the general public has their own complications in their life. Unfortunately, money is the biggest problem that almost all people have to face and during their college life, it is hard for students to manage money for tuition fees, bills, and for the food and shelter. “Community College Students Face a Very Long Road to Graduation” is an article written by Ginia Bellafante and published by The New York Time on October 3, 2014. In the article, Bellafante has written about the LaGurdia Community College student, Vladimir de Jesus academic life and also talks about why Community Colleges have low graduation rate.
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, of the students seeking a bachelor's degree at a four-year university, on average, only 59% of them graduate within six years. It is unfortunate to note that even with the extra two years, students still struggle to persist through graduation, due to numerous hindering factors. Hence, the issue of college success now lies within the central realm of scholarly research, with numerous scholars applying previously known psychological theories to education, including Kurt Lewin’s force-field analysis model, Abraham Maslow’s need reduction theory for motivation, and the self-efficacy and attribution theories. Together, these theories have provided a framework to discover
“Are you fired up?!?” the General yelled. The answer, of course, was “Yes sir, fired up, sir!” This was how we started every year of Dixie Basketball Camp as we came together in the Southwest Mississippi Community College (SMCC) auditorium. It is hard to explain what the Dixie Basketball Camp is all about. Experiencing it is really the only way of knowing. Dixie teaches kids every year the value of hard work along with the fundamentals of basketball. The camp has a unique and special enthusiasm, filled with cheering and chants, many of which have continued for many years and have made Dixie one-of-a-kind. The General, Joe Dean Jr., has been running the camp for over twenty years. He inspires five hundred campers every year to work hard and sweat on the basketball court. Over the past eight years, he has served as a role model for me at the camp. The Dixie Basketball Camp has been a significant part of my life since the fourth grade; I could not help but be upset as I drove away from the campus after my eighth and final year at the world famous Dixie Basketball Camp and Country Club, “Hey!” I was going to miss all of the enthusiasm the most.
The value behind entertainment depends on each individual and their likings, implying that not every single human being enjoys playing sports. However, people who do seek enjoyment through athletic activities should know that such vigorous movement can permit various benefits. Competing 5 on 5 on the basketball court involves teamwork and a game plan. The 5 players on each team must create a clever strategy for allies to follow through on court. Possibly achieving a blind pass, jab step or block can make a victorious battle. Communication, team cooperation and interpreting the opponent’s next
A plethora of reasons exist as to why a certain sport might signal importance to a state, but in Indiana, the sport happens to standout on a whole different level. Current Southeast Dubois Superintendent, Rick Allen, commented on why Indiana high school basketball remains superior saying, “One reason Indiana high school basketball is such a standout of a sport in Indiana is because of the community support behind the team” (Allen 2). The era of basketball between 1911-present remains crucial today not only for the big schools’ gyms in Indiana, but also for small towns gyms such as Huntingburg, Loogootee, Tell City, Ferdinand, and numerous others.
In monumental clashes for the ages, both collegiate men and women’s NCAA March Madness tournaments have provided countless matches, unprecedented athleticism, and glorious victories paired with heartbreaking defeats. Yet despite their similar structures, the two tournaments have attained vastly different levels of recognition in the United States. With men’s basketball, thousands of Americans tune in every year to watch the upsets and Final Four games, drooling over perennial powerhouses such as Duke University, University of Kentucky, and University of Kansas and unknown underdogs like Butler University, Wichita State University, and Virginia Commonwealth University as they all compete in titanic battles. Everyone from retirees to college students fill out fantasy brackets yearly in volumes reaching millions, praying to have that lucky year where they predict the tournament correctly. However, on the female side of the sport, audiences are
The seventh annual Pink Out girls’ basketball game raised nearly $4,100 for the Promedica Monroe Regional Hospital Cancer Connection. Congratulations to the Monroe High School Student Council, which has coordinated this event over the years, for raising thousands of dollars for the Cancer Connection.
As winter comes to an end and spring approaches, so does the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) March Madness frenzy. Since it's inception in 1939 this tournament has gained increased popularity among gamblers and fans alike to become the second most popular tournament in the US after American football's Super Bowl. Every year the madness begins the second week of March and ends the first week of April. Millions of fans across the states eagerly watch as 68 teams race to win college basketball’s biggest prize. This paper will look closely at two of NCAA Division I teams, the Oklahoma University (OU) Sooners men’s, and the Texas Longhorns (TL) women’s programs. It will first break down the tournament revenue brought in to the
It is important for the athletic directors and other authoritative figures in men’s basketball to strive for a common goal and establish a better sense balance among those in the basketball environment by changing the contradicting expectations and policies of the NCAA. Some say basketball players have been taken advantage of for far too long and ask “how much longer are universities willing to wait [the] before students see them as a threat and an aid to the issue rather than a source of education and athletic support”? Neglecting the issue has only postponed its significance to emerge as more relevant. By helping address this issue with urgency will allow the players to feel acknowledged and help create a solution for everyone’s benefit to the issue at
More of a good cause, but I took it way more serious than it should've been I was 3 out of 5 shots putting Andy Lin at a 63% shooting percent. soon after I went up for a rebound and sprained my ankle which made me think how important the cause was knowing I should've sat out for the rest of the game I overcame my injury by wrapping it up and continuing to do it for the ones who’s needed the funding and ones who came out to support .This event was held for a whole day but still with that time frame we were able to earn 2,000 dollars from supporters. I would say that we were the best but we gave it our all and believed in ourselves to gain success which payed off in a win/win
Volleybrawl, a competitive Student Council fundraising event, is a popular competition where co-ed teams from the boys football and the girls volleyball face off in a friendly showdown. Four teams are formed from the 7th and 8th grades.These co-ed teams then play matches against each other in the popular sport of volleyball. Students enjoy watching and participating in this event, while at the same time raising money for future events and Student Council trips. This competition was held on December 2, 2016 Traditionally, we had the boys compete against the girls, however, every year the girls dominated. So, this year, to mix it up, we decided on co-ed teams consisting of both volleyball and football players on both sides. Students suggested
The boys and girls basketball team will be holding a fundraiser with the company Fancloth. Locke has worked with fancloth in the past (baseball and softball). Fancloth is a company that sells customized sporting apparel and then gives a portion of the money raised to the organization. We would like to run the fundraiser for three weeks starting on the 16th of October up until the 3rd of November.
The change project paper will discuss the problem with identifying and retrieving all financial aid transcripts from previously attended institutions without interfering with a student’s ability to focus on their studies. There is certainly already many issues with the complexity of requirements student’s face when preparing to attend college. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a 10-page application that collects personal and financial information on the student(s) and their family. Once the school receives, the application there is possibly another round of collecting data and information. Stratford (2014) stated the following;
There was a bunch of events throughout the game that I noticed such as a furniture company having someone shoot from a recliner to win a recliner or a trivia round where contestants could win money and tickets to an upcoming game. As I work within the marketing department in Wichita State athletic department, we handle all the event extenders at home basketball games so this is one thing that I was sure to pay attention to. The events that they had were much shorter and faster than what we have, whether that was due to TV time cuts or just a department choice they were almost hard to catch. The halftime show at this event was decent as it was a group of kids who did tricks with jump ropes, but it was nothing that captured the crowd and really entertained them. One section of time they used very well was time at timeouts. Every timeout there was some sort of video, advertisement, or statistic that they had to show which made everything seem smooth and flawless. Overall the fan opportunities and event extenders were used very well and very
