Jamal came to Forrester as an extremely talented and intelligent young man. However I beleive William thought his writing lacked direction. Therefore one of the first things William taught Jamal was that writers write. As William explained to Jamal your first draft should be written from the heart. The second draft should be written from your mind. In a nutshell I believe William was trying to guide Jamal into writing with emotion and that by getting the basic thoughts on paper and saved as they came to him he could always later do a rewrite to ensure of proper grammer, style
By examining the ideas in the essays Freewriting by Peter Elbow and The Makers Eye: Revising your own manuscripts by Donald Murray. One can gain a better understanding of the process of turning a piece of writing from an inspiration into a craft. By examining the elements lined out in each essay can be beneficial in creating a piece of writing that is beyond a college or student level. Elbows essay lines out the importance of a strong prewriting regimen. That editing too early can ruin writing. He believes that by using the method of free writing, it can inspire ideas that may be limited when worrying about grammar. While Murray emphasizes the necessity to create many drafts to form writing into its full potential. Saying each draft is an opportunity to discover what the author has to say and they the best way to say it. By transforming writing into its maximum potential it goes from being an idea an inspiration a masterpiece.
On the morning of May 7th, 2000 the murder of Mary Ann Stephens occurred. She was a tourist to Jacksonville, Florida along with her husband. The two were staying at the Ramada Inn Hotel and had just came from breakfast when they were approached by a young black man who held them at gunpoint, took Mrs. Stephens' purse then proceeded to shoot her between the eyes. When the police first arrived, the elderly woman's body was several inches away from the path on which her and her husband were walking along to get back to their room. Her body was strewn across the grass, covered in blood with the bullet and it's wound being clearly visible to the naked eye. This case became controversial and it is believed that there was racial

It is at this time that Frederick Douglass learns one of the greatest freedoms of all. He is set free, in an educational sense. Douglass has been taught a few reading lessons form his mistress. Soon after his master discovers this, and commences the teaching at once. Soon thereafter, Frederick Douglass uses some smart tactics to resume his learning. He in a sense manipulates the children around him into teaching him how to read and write. This grand achievement taught Douglass something, as he says, “From that moment, I understood the pathway from slavery to freedom. It was just what I wanted, and
In chapter 3 of Everyone’s an Author, the main purpose is to discuss the writing process and its components. The chapter emphasizes the idea that practice makes perfect and it may take time and patience to find the writing process that works well for you. In order to find a writing process that leads to you working the most efficiently, one must approach their writing and take note of the habits they make, and analyze whether or not they work well.
Whether while writing an essay or a birthday card, we have all struggled to find the proper words to illustrate our thoughts or feelings from time to time. Upholding the occupation of a writer would multiply that struggle tenfold. An occupation that depends on interesting, fluid pieces of writing every submission requires an adequate number of attempts and patience. Lamott expresses that writers “all often feel like we are pulling teeth” (Lamott), which proves the difficulty of writing is still there no matter the level of writer behind the work. Lamott also emphasizes that a writer “has to start somewhere” and shares her friend’s ideas in her writing to simply “get something - anything - down on paper” (Lamott). Lamott, and the other writers mentioned in this piece, carry incredible track records, while still admitting that perfection did not come initially, or even easily. Thus, proving that the Shitty First Draft has a place in any writer’s notebook or Word document. Lamott’s admission to struggling to properly begin a piece of writing surprised me, given of her success. I could not imagine a woman of her accomplishments stressing out over a food review, yet I felt relieved that someone of Lamott’s title relates to an amateur writer like myself. I often put off my writing as well when I cannot articulate a proper introduction. I do every other possible homework, or shy away from homework in general because the
Before I read this piece of art, I did not think that I would like it; I thought it was a tedious literary work like the ones a part of a colossal textbook at first glance. However, I changed my mind after reading it thoroughly. I am honestly amazed at how Douglass’ words link together to have such easy flow and clarity through each sentence. He is a better writer than some of the people who learned how to read and write at an even younger age than him. Last but not least, I love how he proves that education is important since reading and writing gave him the advantage to become a free man; this excerpt gives a lesson on why education is pivotal to gaining knowledge to have a sense of individuality.
Jamal's innate traits influence the outcome because even though he was smart, sometimes he didn’t really try in school. Like he did good on exams but his grade in the class was a C. Then after he met Forrester and Forrester put him in check, he started giving his all in school. Jamal's environment influenced the outcome because around his friends it was just basketball, jokes, and more basketball but when he got home he would write in his little journal. With all his friends he talked a little more while in class he was really quiet.
In Donald Murray’s essay “The Maker’s Eye,” he says that writing is not a short process and that writers must create a series of drafts before he or she has a successful piece of writing. They also have to be open to both negative and positive feedback because each draft can be edited to make it clearer. Murray also talks about the importance of rewriting, which includes processes like scanning drafts and modifying problems which sentences are not relative to the thesis in order to make them readable (Murray, p.83). In addition, writers must remember to be more conscious of readers’ interests and be certain their readers want to receive the information, which the authors are trying to convey accurately. In other words, writers must understand
“Madman, Architect, Carpenter, Judge: Roles and the Writing Process” written by Betty S. Flowers suggests that writing is a process that can be blocked by different personas, or roles, in our brain. These personas can fight against each other or skillfully work together. The writing process can either be difficult or “can come only when the energies are flowing freely-when you’re not stuck”. To write successfully, we must separate these energies. Otherwise, you risk not ever starting or starting and not finishing. The roles that help use in the writing process are the madman, architect, carpenter, and judge.
When I read this book, I felt a familiar bond to Mattie, the main character, as she loves writing and so do I. She says in the book, as she is deliberating over buying an expensive composition book, “I had more ideas. Tons of them. For stories and poems. I chewed the inside of my cheek, deliberating. I knew I would have to write a lot when I went to Barnard --- if I went to Barnard—and it might be a good idea to get a head start.” I also have kept a journal, and have written stories in it. Having a journal has helped organized my thoughts and produce a good, quality piece of work. In Mattie’s case, having a journal helped her get into college, when her teacher Miss Wilcox reads her work and pushes for her to go to college. So having a journal
Learning to write deliberately was extremely important because you only get so much time with your reader- it’s not a novel- so you must choose your words wisely to ensure that the reader can understand and get something out of your work whether it be entertainment or information.
Writers like himself are not knowing what they truly want to voice and that is the beauty behind the whole creative process. He discusses early in the essay “that the writer is one who, embarking upon a task, does not know what to do” and goes throughout discussing the technicalities of writing and the honesties along with it. He allows audiences to
Furthermore, through challenging and intense class assignments and writing competition, Jamal is able to transform his aspiration (an embodied cultural capital) and advice from Forrester (a social capital) into excellent writing skills (a new embodied cultural capital). Jamal constantly reads and writes under Forrester’s instruction, but all of these would not have been possible if Jamal does not attend Mailor-Callow, as Forrester states: “questions of your writing suggest what you are going to do in your life. And this is the question that your present school could not answer for you.” Mailor-Callow enables Jamal to achieve excellence by constantly challenging him. For instance, Jamal would have not asked Forrester for help in writing if professor Crawford does not criticize
Murray also explains both the pros and the cons of writing with surprise, he says that writing with surprise helps writers to find their own style and voice in writing. It also helps them find joy in writing and motivates them to continue writing day after day. On the other hand, when writing with surprise, writing is made harder for students as he says that there is no set schedule for writing with surprise and who knows what you might end up writing about which will cause difficulties in a student’s life where education is geared towards a single topic and deadlines. He uses these points to support his claim and also to make it persuasive and inviting to the audience. His logic is strong and his argument is well thought out, however they must be taken with a grain of salt as there is a strong emotional view which diminishes his logic in the eyes of the audience
