The day center provides a safe warm place for the homeless and those with mental illnesses. They provide a stigma free welcoming environment were those feel welcome to come and interact with peers. The organization also has specific workers that help with finding shelter, apartments, and jobs. They also have a community closet for clothing that is open every Tuesday and Thursday. In the United States the Mental Health Care field is one of the most underserved areas of healthcare. The mental healthcare field faces many challenges to the proper treatment of patients from both a societal and professional standpoint. From a societal perspective a negative stereotype is associated with patients seeking psychiatric care. Patients seeking care are often labeled as defective or damaged. Add in the complication that most patients with mental illness appear to be normal, accepting that someone is ill without outward symptoms can also be difficult for a society to understand. From a professional perspective the challenges within the mental health care industry include personal prejudice, staffing issues, and problems with coordinating care. The combination of these factors has a direct negative impact on the willingness of individuals suffering from mental illness in seeking the care needed to treat the symptoms of mental illness.

Many people suffer from mental health challenges. Often times individuals need a place to go to obtain help both mentally and physically. Mental health problems can affect a significant amount of people. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood (“What is mental health?”, 2013 ). Mental health problems can become prevalent at any stage of life. It is important that those mental health problems be addressed and what better way to address those issues is to reach out to the local community to find those resources that can help assist in emergent and non-emergent mental health care.

Program evaluations have made contributions to the Mental Health field for many decades. In the past program evaluations have been conducted outside the scope of a traditional Marriage and Family therapy framework. Sprenkle (2003) elaborates that MFT’s have been trying to move towards evidence-based research and evaluations. Trying to find the balance between evidence based and a systematic approach. What is also an area that poses some challenges is counselors and therapists trying to implement programs into existing organizations (Sprenkle, 2003). Program evaluations are able to provide useful information to MFT’s to aid in making improvements (Mertens & Wilson, 2012). Merton & Wilson (2012) explain that evaluations may also interfere
In a case study at a California Correction facility, a select group of young offenders that ranged from the ages of ten and eighteen, that were selected for a referral for mental health services that were incarcerated between a certain time were eligible for this study, the group was dwindled down from an alarming rate of 3200 that were detained annually down to a group of just 206. These offender had to agree to be part of this study as well as seek permission from their parents as well as the judges that had sentenced them. The fact that the referrals must come from either their parents request or the request of the court. This is just a crazy thing for me to wrap my head around.
According to Bureau of Justice Statistics, 75% of females and 63% of males in local jails have suffered from mental illness. This means most criminals are dealing with serious mental health issues and aren’t getting the help they need. Thus, leading them to commit unlawful crimes. They are mentally ill and are committing these crimes due to the fact that they aren’t receiving treatment and aren’t being assisted. Additionally, many times when people are diagnosed, they often reject a professional’s diagnosis and treatment. They feel as though they are mentally healthy, and the thoughts they think and decisions they make aren’t unethical or immoral. This mentality stems from the ignorance common people have on mental illness. When these people
going from being housed in a medical institution to a jail was called decriminalization. This process lead to 14.5% of men and 31% of women in jail to be suffering from some form of mental illness (Mahoney, 2012). Mentally ill inmates need additional care, medication and supervision. They can take up to 90% of a jails resources (Reitzel, 2017).
As assumed, mental health courts are available to the mentally ill and disabled population. With that being said, if an individual goes through valid and reliable testing for a mental illness or disability and it comes back positive, the use of a mental health court in a criminal case can be warranted. Nonetheless, this is only legally binding if the results of professional testing deem that a mental illness or disability contributed to their criminal activity. The reasoning behind the availability of mental health courts is to allow individuals who are deemed mentally ill or disabled during a criminal case the ability to gain stability through multiple intervention measures. Subsequently, one feature of mental health courts is giving “defendants
The overall perception of the community is to reduce recidivism among the mentally ill. In effort to resolve this problem several stakeholders such as Durham County judges, District attorney, mental health agency, LME (Alliance Behavioral Healthcare) sheriff department, county commissioner, social workers, evaluators, Criminal Justice Resource Center, board members and Stepping Up Initiative have gathered to develop a resolve for this issues due to Durham county spending substantial amounts of money on evaluations and housing these individuals in jail. They have discussed solution of developing mental health courts and ensuring that first contact for identified individuals with mental illnesses is not jail, assessing individuals when first
The leading issue in today’s society is Mental health however, when overlapped with the Canadian criminal justice system, it becomes more prominent. Inmates with mental health often experience trauma when they are targets of brutal punishments or segregation. According to the World Health Organization, mental health is described as “a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community”. This state controls the physical, mental and emotional well-being. Mental health can affect one’s body to a severe depression where they experience eating disorder, anxiety or the feeling of abandonment. Mental health is mainly common in correctional institutions; specifically in federal correctional systems where the rate for mental disorders are said to be up to three times as common as in the Canadian population at large (Sorenson, 2010). Many reasons have proven to be associated with the growing population of inmates in the correctional facility with mental health such as street violence, drug issues, survival needs
