Denver House My community clinical was at the Denver House Mental Health Association located in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This is a day center for targeted for the people with mental illnesses and homeless, which opened in 2012 (mhaok.org). Many of the homeless population in Tulsa, Ok suffer from a mental illness. Due to the lack of resources in our community, those who suffer from a mental illness end up on the streets. The day center provides a safe warm place for the homeless and those with mental illnesses. They provide a stigma free welcoming environment were those feel welcome to come and interact with peers. The organization also has specific workers that help with finding shelter, apartments, and jobs. They also have a community closet for clothing that is open every Tuesday and Thursday. You must be 18 years old, be drug free while on premises, and follow basic rules to come to the Denver House. My Thoughts I think the Denver House is a great resource for Tulsa’s community. It does take getting used to being in a different …show more content…
The studies show there is confusion about the roles provided by day centers and the clinical and social needs they are able to meet (Catty et al, 2007). The study suggest that, it is probably best that people with serious mental illness, given the choice, to be able to choose the best facility for that person (Catty et al, 2017). Although, the study doesn’t strongly support day-centers in the care for people with a mental illness, the Denver House is a great resource for Tulsa. Whether a medical day center vs. a non-medical day center is better, I think that a day center for the community is a imperative part of a city. I hope with recent budget cuts to Oklahoma mental health funding that Denver House can continue to help the people of
Other housing needs for the mentally ill include specialized in- house primary care, health promotion programmes, open access mental services (accessible to all at any time, missed appointments are also tolerated), assertive management, street based service provision, holistic and generalist support apart from just clinical diagnosis, talking therapies and full access to mainstream services. Most importantly, the housed mentally ill persons have to be shielded from becoming homeless again. Such assurance that they will forever have a comfortable place to stay will relax their minds. This will go a long way in promoting their mental well being (Randall et al. 2006).
Cassie presents with multidimensional and complex problems. The problems are inter related and need to be addressed concurrently. This client presents with a history of anxiety and childhood sexual abuse which manifests as post traumatic stress disorder [PTSD], social phobia (social anxiety disorder) and depression. Wagner (2008) reports a strong association between social anxiety disorder and depression. Post traumatic stress disorder [PTSD] in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DMS-5; American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2013) specifically includes sexual violation as one of the diagnostic criteria for PTSD. Consequentially, co-morbid symptoms create dis-regulated behaviours which may have long
Conversely, resources can be accessed through the Provincial Health Services Authority, PHSA. PHSA believes that untreated mental illness can hugely impact employee health and works to support health care professionals, like nurses, to overcome emotional challenges (Provincial Health Services Authority [PHSA], 2017). Through their website, nurses suffering from a psychological injury can access resources such as the free and confidential Employee and Family Assistance Program, EFAP. Not only does EFAP provide Monday to Friday counselling services for employees, but the program also offers Critical Incident Stress Management Services, CISM. This provides 24 hour, 7 days a week triage, consultation and coaching for health care workers experiencing a traumatic event (Employee and Family Assistance Program, 2012). This program is a great tool for nurses and should be utilized whenever necessary.

Denver’s homeless population runs in the thousands. Homelessness may be caused or exacerbated by an individual’s chronic mental or physical illness, all issues that the Mental Health Center of Denver (MHCD), a member of the National Council for Behavioral Health, addresses. Integrated housing and recognizing the effects of trauma have already been a part of the services offered by MHCD. After participating in a National Council Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) Learning Community, MHCD created a workgroup to discuss integrating more TIC principles into the organization. From this, the concept of integrating these trauma-informed care principles into the center’s housing and residential services emerged.
The healing hands health rights campaign is an initiative by ANTaR which was launched in February 2004. The campaign itself is an effective way of promoting health as a fundamental human right issue, raising awareness of political will and promoting the need for a change in policy so that resources are allocated on the basis of indigenous health. The development of the campaign and the various tactics employed have enabled the issues of indigenous health rights to come to light as a serious matter amongst the general public, political parties, organisations, media etc. The campaign and the information kits readily available are a practical way of promoting the
Additionally, I volunteered with community programs focused on alleviating health care issues. For example, I worked with an organization that promotes community discourse on the unique, hidden health challenges of homeless and low-income women and girls. Not long after that, I volunteered at two events,

In 2010, my cousin went on a hiking trip with her Residential Treatment Center (RTC). On that trip, she collapsed and wasn’t taken to the hospital until a couple weeks later. By that time, we found out that her body was overheated, which caused her to collapse and she was slowly becoming brain dead. She passed away three days after her seventeenth birthday, which would have made it year before she could come back to our family. If only the RTC staff was able to get her to a hospital soon enough, she would have been able to share memories with our family would be able to have a relationship with my cousin. There is an issue with the RTC’s that need to be handled. RTC’s “provide intensive help for youth with serious emotional and behavior problems (Residential)”. There needs to be better communication with the citizens, more drop-ins in the centers and a more thorough application process for the staff at the Residential Treatment Centers in order to give these foster children the care and attention they need.
Many people suffer from mental health challenges. Often times individuals need a place to go to obtain help both mentally and physically. Mental health problems can affect a significant amount of people. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood (“What is mental health?”, 2013 ). Mental health problems can become prevalent at any stage of life. It is important that those mental health problems be addressed and what better way to address those issues is to reach out to the local community to find those resources that can help assist in emergent and non-emergent mental health care.
