Case Women’s Center
Implementation of Financial Cutbacks
The women’s agency offers a full range of services to women in the central valley community. Unfortunately, the program was affected by cutbacks and the professionals who provided the counseling were women with degrees in social work, counseling, and psychology. Research suggests that social work professionals are some of the best prepared to respond to the world’s social problems. Social workers are not easy to find in the mix of societal problem solving and for the Director of the women’s agency to have reduced the number of counseling professionals from nine to three was an error on her behalf. It would have been in the interest of the Director to support the social workers. The professionals who provided the counseling services could have taken action to assert and “stand up and embrace the straightforward business sense found in social entrepreneurship” (Germak & Singh, 2010, p. 80), the hybrid of social work macro practice and business activities. Many social workers are already exposed to the business of working in nonprofit environments, “encompassing nearly 1.6 million organizations and having an aggregate budget of approximately $820 billion, the nonprofit sector in the United States is a robust socio-economic influence” (Germak & Singh, 2010, p. 80). The Director could have researched about the growth of the nonprofit industry and competed for the funding. So, it is to the interest of social workers to
The practice of social work has evolved from three major movements, The Charity Organizations, Settlement Houses, and Child Saving Movements. “Charity organization societies were developed by philanthropists to regulate the use of charitable agencies by the poor” (pg. 52). This society was organized to assist the needy, but also to ensure that they only received help from one charity. There is a stigma that people should not be helped too much or they will become reliant on the assistance of the government. Our role as a social worker is to make sure that people are getting as much assistance as they need. Some people have no choice and do have to rely on
On September 21, 2015, I met with Ms. Katie, a student in the MSW program at NCSU, to conduct an interview. We met at Starbucks in Cary, in the crossroads shopping center. Ms. Katie’s responses helped me learn and think about social workers in the child welfare social field. As a prospective social worker, my questions were formed based thoughts that I was concerned about my responsibilities in the social work field..
The Circle Center has two social workers, Jay Burkhardt and Erin Brunette. I interviewed Erin Burnette January 30, 2017 in her office at The Circle Center. When I first walked into her office, I noticed how clean and neat it was which was surprising to me because I always imagined a social worker’s office to be unorganized with files everywhere. As I looked around I noticed pictures of her family and historical pictures, leaving me under the impression that she was a strong advocate for human rights. From the looks of her room, I assumed that having pictures of her family in her helps her keep stress at a minimum while at work. Erin Burnette, from Knoxville, Tennessee moved to Richmond in 1999 to attend Virginia Commonwealth University where she received her master in social work. Erin also has a master of divinity from Baptist Seminary at Richmond. With her master of divinity, Erin served as a Hospice Chaplain for ten years. As of today, she withholds sustainable credibility due to her Erin’s social work career began in the year of 2004 but she feels that she has been involved with social work her entire life. During our interview, Erin explained why she chose social work, she says that her parents and her
Social work agencies strive to provide access to services that promote well-being for those most in need in society. Different agencies may vary in regard to their specific purposes, missions, or foundations. Two agencies that provide assistance in diverse ways to individuals in need are the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services and The Mayhill Hospital. The following discussion will explore comparisons and contrasts between these agencies with regard to their focuses, interventions, and roles.
Although Canada is an advanced country full of opportunities, it has yet to fight some of its largest issues. Women in Canada are still victims of gender inequality. Women have been facing a patriarchal stance in society for as long as they can remember, but it goes beyond just patriarchy. These women are living in conditions which could be viewed as inhumane. In 1991, The Canadian Women’s Foundation was formed and they took a stance enforcing women’s equality. Women face poverty, violence in various ways such as; physical, emotional, and financial, they are viewed nothing more than just sex objects used to sell products to the public, and women are discouraged from working at the same
Understanding the need of the community is important to social work because it will be our guide in how we serve our community as a whole. Our role is to respond to the needs of the vulnerable population by addressing issues of poverty, diversity, homelessness, equality and health concern of the individual that live within our community. The homeless population within our local community has continued to rise. And over the past few yours has cause a lot of concern for local business in our downtown district of Columbia. Improving shelters and providing much needed services have become vital in order to help our community see a decline in the number of families on our local streets.
Rationale The public image of social work has always been important in the field, strengthened continuously today by the National Association of Social Workers with its efforts to encourage a positive image of professionals and with the strong emphasis of the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics. The field continuously strives to preserve the history of social work through educating students to understand the current state of the field and the many strides taken by social work pioneers such as Mary Richmond. Mary Richmond, “constantly sought to improve the public’s understanding of and appreciation for the profession” (Murdach, 2011). Developing a understanding of the impact
It was difficult to find the PSU Women’s Resource Center social movements and policies in the PSU library. They weren’t on file there so I had to go their web page and found their values and advisory board polices, but I also round a summary of their history and how they were founded. I also discovered that the WRC has a group called Action Teams from when I went in to talk to their Volunteering Director. The purpose of these teams is to create change on campus in a non-violent ways. The teams are composed of students from PSU and each group has a different focus. The one I was hoping to work with is called Body Politics Action Team.
The quest for efficiency and administrative technique in social agency operations paralleled the caseworker’s efforts to reduce the range of intuition, subjectivity, and unpredictability in her own work. In both cases the volunteer introduced an element of uncertainty. Neither her livelihood nor social status depended upon conformity to agency policy or to the standards and procedures of professional casework. Volunteer service conflicted with the administrator’s desire for rational, efficient organization and the social worker’s identification with the agency as a vehicle for professional achievement. The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) is a national association of educational programs and individuals that confirms and improves the quality of social work education to become a professional job. On the other hand, the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is the largest membership organization of professional social workers in the world, with approximately 132,000 members. To be more specific, NASW has a determination to intensify the maturity and developmental process of its members. The main goal is to retain professional standards and to create fair social policies. NASW progresses
When starting this project, I was not sure who I wanted to interview, which field of social work, I wanted to know more first-hand information about. I thought about interviewing a school social worker, or a non-profit management social worker. I eventually decided that I would like to learn about non-profit management because I have not had much knowledge on that concertation.
For this reflective journal, I have decided to draw parallels between approaches to social work that I have learned in my placement, and what I have learned during my academic career at Carleton University. Placement thus far, has been an eye-opening and rich experience, which has taught me about the profession that I aspire to be a part of. I am a third year student, and much of my time spent at Carleton, has been studying theories, and becoming exposed to different schools of thought. Theories are incredibly beneficial, to teach and inform the practice of the next generation of social workers. However, placement has provided me with the opportunity to apply theoretical ideals, to real life social work practice.
In completing this essay an opportunity was given to visit a social service agency to interview a social worker. The interview will focus on the educational background of the social worker, job duties, training, funding, organization structure, target population, recommended opportunities for growth, and the correlation between social work and course work.
Today there is a great need for social service organizations. The population of a lot of cities and countries has grown, creating the need for more shelters, soup kitchens, and so on. Most of these organizations are church based and community founded. Then there are others that are funded by federal and state government.
