Early on his mother saw the interest that Johnny had in music and “Carrie Rivers Cash scraped together enough money so that Johnny could take singing lessons” (Editors, 2016). Johnny unfortunately lost his brother “Jack in a tragic death in 1944 jack was only 14, this was to a farming accident” (Editors, 2016). In 1950 Johnny graduated High School and had a few jobs until he join the Air Force. He did his “basic training in Texas, where met Vivian Liberto, whom he 'd eventually marry and father four daughters with” (Editors, 2016). In 1954 Johnny was discharged from the military and moved to Memphis, Tennessee. Cash was married Vivian in 1954 and they had two girl named Roseanne and Kathy born in 1957. In 1959 they had another daughter named Cindy. They moved to Ventura, California and had another girl named Tara born in 1961. Johnny’s schedule and the amount of pressure from having the family took a toll on him. “Drugs and alcohol were frequent tour companions while Vivian stayed at home with the children” (Editors, 2016). “Johnny Cash toured throughout the early 1960s, playing as many as 300 shows a year. He began taking amphetamines to keep up with the pace of his life” (Silva, 2016). “As his drug addiction worsened, Cash broke up with his first wife Vivian. By 1963, he had moved to New York City, effectively abandoning his family” (Silva, 2016). Vivian finally filled for a divorce in 1966, once the divorce was finalized he moved back to Memphis, Tennessee were the
Johnny Cash achieved many accolades in his long, influential life. Debatably the most noteworthy is how he is one of three artists, Elvis, Hank Williams, and Cash, who is a member of both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Becoming a member of both is not an easy feet for any artist. In order to do so one has to be the very best in each style of music. Cash at 48 became the youngest performer to ever be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame (Danker). Kris Kristofferson put it the best way, “You felt like he should've had his face on Mount Rushmore” ( Kristofferson). This view was really how the American public viewed J.C. He was an American hero on par with Presidents or war heroes. He was given as
The purpose of this case study is to reveal that John R. Cash has depression and has suffered from this disorder for many years. Johnny Cash has had an interesting past and some of it hints to signs of previous depression. This study will show that depression can hit anyone, even those that people admire and want to be like someday.
“His star ascended higher still in 1958, when he departed from Sun Records and signed with Columbia Records...” (Biography In Context) Cash struggled with substance abuse, especially after his divorce with Liberto, which greatly affected his career. On the flip side of this, he married June Carter, in the spring of 1968, and she helped reform him. Later, he put out his first multimillion-selling album, Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison (1968). This album earned two Grammy Awards. The second prison album, Johnny Cash at San Quentin (1969), helped fuel his image as “...an unrepentant bad boy...” (Biography In Context) After that, he worked with his gospel, folk, and patriotic side. “...young audiences who had flocked to the Folsom and San Quentin albums did not appreciate his gospel and patriotic themes, forcing him to fall back on his core country audience.” (Biography In Context) In 1980, Johnny Cash was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. In 1985, he “...joined Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson to tour and record as the Highwaymen.” (Biography In Context) Shockingly, in 1986, Columbia Records refused to re-sign him to a record contract due to resurging drug dependence. Regardless, in 1990, Johnny Cash was then inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. Providentially, Cash got a record deal with Rick Rubin. Rubin would help redeem Cash’s recording career and produce his last four
Johnny Cash was interested in music at a very young age. When he was young, he loved listening to the radio to get away from “the daily grind of farming” (Cusic, 2014). He didn’t begin his singing career right after growing up in Arkansas though. He went to college, had a factory job, and was in the U.S. Air Force (Cameron, 2004). He began playing the guitar in Germany while working as a radio operator for the U.S. Air Force (Cusic, 2014). After appearing on one of Bob Dylan’s albums, Nashville Skyline, he became more popular with adolescent fans (Cameron, 2004).
Johnny Cash was the stage name of J. R. Cash that he began using after being signed with Sun Records. Cash was born as J.R. Cash on February 26, 1932 in Kingsland, Arkansas. He was one of seven children and was raised by his parents Roy Cash and Carrie Cloveree. When Cash was three years old, his family moved to Dyess, Arkansas. Then when he turned five, he began working on a cotton farm. Cash began singing while working in the fields to pass the time with his family. He was inspired from his family farm being flooded to write his song “Five Feet High and Rising.” Many of his music was about his real life experiences that he and his family had been through. Many people can relate to his music because they may have been through similar circumstances. Cash lost his oldest brother, Jack, in 1944, to a head saw at the mill his brother worked at, which Jack, died a week later from, which caused Cash to blame himself. Cash 's inspiration to sing began with gospel music. He began listening to his mother with folk songs and singing gospel hymns. She also taught him to play guitar. He began singing and writing his own music at twelve years old. He sang gospel in high school and was aired on a local radio station.
From the time he could speak, Johnny had been singing whatever little tune he could gather. As a youngster, he sang gospel hymns his mother taught him each day. His first original songs were titled “Hey Porter” and “Cry, Cry, Cry”. Subsequent to his signing with Sun Records came the one of his most recognized songs of all time, “Folsom Prison Blues” in 1955. In 1956, he then produced “I Walk the Line”, followed by “Ring of Fire” in 1963. Each of these signifies a different battle in Johnny’s journey. After his second marriage, a new chapter began and his life would change forever. The best writers pull from their feelings, emotions, and ideas. All of those changed for Cash, when he recommitted himself to the Lord preceding his second marriage. Shortly after the wedding, Cash released a new album titled Sunday Down South encompassing his reaffirmation as a man of God. However, not only was Johnny able to reinvent himself, but through his time with The Highwaymen; he was able to introduce the other members to
These songs were later used when Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Two signed with Sun Records. While trying to become a performer, Cash married Vivian Liberto. Johnny Cash’s fame picked up fast as he reached top 20 in the billboards with “Cry, Cry, Cry.” While Cash’s initial status doesn’t follow a traditional Shakespearean mold, he achieves legendary status through his singing

On February 26, 1932, a legend was born, only 2 hours north from Texarkana. Kingsland Arkansas is the hometown of Mr. Johnny Cash, a song writer, a performer, a country music singer, a guitarist, an alcoholic, and a lover. Cash was originally born as, John R. Cash, after his mother and father. Between his parents, they raised 6 children. When Cash was only 3, his father moved his family to Dyess Colony in the northeastern part of Arkansas, which became the childhood home of Cash. Here, his family became farmers. I think the first nerve that was struck for Johnny Cash, was when his older brother, Jack, died while cutting wood. Cash was so devastated that the day of his funeral, Cash went with a shovel to the grave site and dug him up, only at 12 years old.
Cash’s adult life was interesting to say the least. After Cash got out of the Air Force in 1954, “he married Vivian Liberto” (“Johnny Cash” 1). This marriage was the first step in getting a life started for Cash. Cash started playing in a trio and got signed by an independent label, Sun Records, who also worked with Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and many other artists that challenged the course of mainstream music (“Johnny” 2). Cash was finally getting his chance to sing on
Most of us know the Man in Black, but do we truly know him? His life was a country song full of love and loss, passion and heartbreak — grief, loneliness, guilt, faith, melodrama and striving for redemption. Johnny Cash overcome all of this and became the king of country music (Kakutani).
First off let me start off by saying Johnny Cash is one of the biggest legends ever. His music has spanned Decades and has inspired many artist all over the country, and let’s be honest, not many artists can reach these standards. He has made a huge impact on Country, Rock and Roll, blues, and many more genres of music. But he has also influenced the American culture through the use of his own works, thus creating both a mixture of controversy and envy in his vast amounts of those who have heard the tunes that belong to Cash.
Jimmie inspired many people with his career. When Jimmie was twelve he sang Steamboat Bill in a talent contest and won. It was his first taste of fame and decided to start his own traveling show. After his mother died his family went poor. He taught himself guitar, but was not able to read or write music. When he was away with relatives he learned vaudeville, pop, and dance hall ditties. In 1924, Rodgers got tuberculosis, and could no longer work long days out on the railroad. It was the same disease that has taken his mother’s life. Making the best of the illness, Rodgers turned his focus to music. He inspired people that ‘bad situations can't stop you from achieving your dreams”. He is one of the first country singer, was a national
The patient Maria Soto presents as an able bodied 35 year old Hispanic female. She is currently unemployed and residing with her boyfriend in East Los Angeles. She falls within the low income bracket. The patient is seeking therapy for depression. In the textbook Essentials of Understanding Abnormal Behavior defines depression as a “mood state characterized by intense sadness or despair, feelings of worthlessness, and withdrawal from others.” (Sue, Wing Sue & Sue, 2005). I will also be using the Fundamental of Abnormal Psychology by Ronald J Comer to support the diagnosis and provide treatment plan for Maria Soto.
