Over the past 150 years there has been undeniable evidence that suggest the Earth is warming at a significant rate. Scientist who have done extensive research on Global warming as it as known have concluded that the major cause is the ‘Greenhouse Effect’. The Sun emits light waves and energy that pass through our atmosphere, this is absorbed by the surface and turned into heat energy, which then radiates off and is emitted back into the direction of space. Not all of the particles are able to make it out of the atmosphere due to gas molecules clogging up the air. This is warms the Earth very similar to the way a greenhouse would; the atmosphere being the glass of the house and the Earth being the vegetation inside the house.

Humans are polluting our atmosphere causing the Greenhouse Effect.  What’s the Greenhouse Effect?  “The Greenhouse Effect can be visualized as follows: imagine that Earth has been encircled by a giant glass sphere.  The heat of the sun penetrates through the glass.  Some of the heat is absorbed by the Earth, and some is radiated back towards space.  The radiated heat reaches the glass sphere and is prevented from dispersing any further”(Global Warming The Facts).  This makes the heat bounce back towards the Earth, which heats it up tremendously.

People complain about hot summers, and to cold of winters, why it would still be snowing during May in North East, Ohio. These temperature changes could all be a result of one thing, global warming. Global warming is a change in temperature due to gases and solutions humans put into the environment. The gases and solutions effect the natural gases in the environment that maintain the temperatures around the world. Although that is how global warming is defined, it has a way greater effect than just temperature changes. The greenhouse effect is the exchange of incoming and outgoing radiation that warms the Earth; it is often referred to as the greenhouse effect because a greenhouse works in much the same way (LiveScience 1). One of the main factors that affect the rise in global temperatures are greenhouse gasses. These are gases that have been building up in the Earth’s atmosphere in the last few centuries that absorb infrared radiation. This absorption is critical, because it keeps the planet from freezing. However, an increase in greenhouse gases causes the greenhouse effect, which means that the energy emitted from the sun remains trapped.

The greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and other pollutants absorb more heat from the sun then it radiates back. This causes an increase in the intensity of heat in the atmosphere. In addition, greenhouse gases can cause the ozone layer – a protective layer in the earth’s atmosphere – to develop holes.
