In 2013, there was 2,458,000 incidences of burglary within the United States (Karmen 82). Situational factors that can be present that can increase a person’s chance of being a victim of burglary includes leaving their values where an offender is likely to see them. Nita Dobbs stated she and her husband routinely lock the doors and windows prior to going to bed, however her back door does not have a deadbolt and would be the easiest door to bypass. Upon examining the door in question, a glass paned door leading to the back porch patio area, I observed it had two plastic locking mechanisms one near the top of the door and one near the bottom, neither of which appeared damaged. Nita Dobbs stated she found her wallet lying open on the patio table just outside this back door. From outside looking in from the door in question I could clearly see the kitchen and bar area, where the purse and jewelry would have been located.

We shouldn’t have to live like that and law enforcement officers need to understand that if we wish to handle a situation like that on our own we should be able to.
Introduction Routine activity theory is derived from the classical school criminological thought. Theorists from the classical school see humans as rational beings that make their decisions based on their own free will. Unlike the majority of theories, the routine activity theory focuses on victimization instead of the offender. Instead of explaining or focusing on why crime occurs, the routine activity theory presumes that criminal behavior and tendencies are constantly present in members of society, but the criminal behavior is waiting for opportunity to rise.
