Climate Change
Climate change is a large-scale, long-term shift in the planet's weather patterns or average temperatures. Earth has had tropical climates and ice ages many times in its 4.5 billion years. From Climate Change in Australia 2016, changes to the climate system have been observed at a global scale, in the measurements of temperature at the surface, the middle atmosphere, increased, increased sea surface temperature, increased ocean heat content and increased water vapour in the atmosphere. One of the main causes of climate change in recent years and that is projected to cause major increases in global temperature in the future is greenhouse gas emissions. The concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide in the atmosphere have increased to unexpectedly high levels since pre- industrial times.
Rising Sea Levels
Climate change has also contributed to rising sea levels through causing two main processes. Thermal expansion which is the process of which ocean water expands as it heats up and additional water flow which is caused by melted ice water flowing into the ocean. Evidence shows that sea levels have risen as a result of climate change through observation of paleo indicators, tide gauges, and satellite measurements. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change states that over the last century global average sea level rose by 1.7 mm per year, in recent years (between 1993 and 2010) this rate has increased to 3.2 mm per year.
