Many of us can recognize that leaving things to the very last minute is not very wise and can cause an abundance of unnecessary stress. Procrastination is self-sabotage whether it’s to pay a credit card bill, fill up gas in your car, or complete your homework. Procrastination ranges from the most miniscule task to the most significant ones so the question is why do people procrastinate? For myself I rationalize this behavior by saying I work best under pressure but through my recent discoveries I found this isn’t true at all, it was just an excuse. The heavy pressure we feel when an important deadline is approaching physically forces us to complete our work but that doesn’t always mean that our work is good. Starting a project weeks before it is due guarantees that we had time to think and process your ideas therefore our work is our work is generally well-prepared. I myself have been guilty of procrastinating on a daily basis. Seniors still want to make solid grades depite their lack of motivation to get them. Another thing I could relate the procrastination to is a lack of motivation. In high school I didn’t have to do much studying or spend time writing long papers or doing assignments. So when I came to college I thought it would be the same way and I quickly learned that the college work load is much different and more intense than a high school work load. This was a major factor in my GPA being where it was. I was not extremely motivated to be taking all the general education classes I was enrolled in and therefore did not invest the time that I should have. Having a good GPA is not a primary instinct like hunger or thirst, it is taught to you that you should strive to have a good GPA. Hunger, thirst, sleep, and sex are all primary drives of motivation and are all biological needs.

People procrastinate because they are afraid to fail, they have poor time management, they avoid things that seem difficult or they feel depressed or they feel guilty. Some people believe that other procrastinate out of laziness or lack of discipline, but I know there are perfectionists that often procrastinate as well. For example, a perfectionist may put off writing a paper until the night before it is due and then they will have an excuse saying, “I restarted because I didn’t like what I had written.”. Another example is that some philosophers and scientists, such that Aristotle questioned if time even exists, and Einstein believed that time was a muddle in which the past, present and future were only illusions.

Their tired, feeling lazy, find the material boring, and even boredom. Whether it’s paying a parking ticket, doing laundry or organizing your closet, we’ve all put certain things off. Procrastinators live in a constant state of denial not thinking about the long term consequences. As tempting and easy as it is, avoidance always catches up. An example, making changes in your diet right away and not saying you will start till Monday.

Each college student will face procrastination at some point in her college career. It is an epidemic of the academic world. Depending on the student it will impact her sleeping habits, grades, and overall health. However, each student will handle it differently. Some will depart from college with minimal stress and others with grey hairs. Either way, procrastination will surely be a part of the college world

College students have to balance work, family, and college activists and any delaying behavior from within can cause an unbalance. This behavior is called procrastinating and it can lead to problems in many areas of a student’s life. College students are the worst hit by this type of behavior because they have many different activities to focus on instead of studying. These activities can cause students to study when they have time which often is usually too short amount of time. There is a time and place to relax and enjoy life, but if students focus on playing around instead of getting their assignments done, college life will be stressful.

I procrastinate more than I’d like to admit. Always waiting until the last minute to write an essay or finish a project doesn’t usually work in high school so it definitely won’t work in college. In the adult world time management is also important, for example making bill payments on time, scheduling appointments, balancing work, and creating space for free time is all very important. I think junior year has been a wake up call, I realized the severity of procrastination and poor time management this year due to constant stress. I will definitely plan more effectively and attempt to cease my procrastinating.

Leading most students down a dangerous path to procrastination; that negative impact affect students from their physical health, mental health, and social health.

According to Semb, Glick and Spencer (1979), the level of procrastination increases as an individual stays longer in universities. It was stated by Ellis and Knaus (1977) that approximately, over 70% of college students engage in this activity. Undergraduates tend to start papers during the last minute; they fail to prioritize what should be accomplished first, and as a result, their academic performance is greatly affected. A detrimental effect on their studies leads to having poor grades and eventually, failure in class (Semb, et.al., 1979).

Credibility Statement: You should care about it because it may explain why some you delay things and what results come out of it. As a very frequent procrastinator myself, I think I have enough experience with this subject to talk about it. I did about seven hours research for this topic although I do already know some of the causes and the effects from postponing things.

Another factor that causes procrastination is fear. Fear is a very powerful emotion. Whenever someone is faced with a difficult task, they can become overran by the fear of not being able to complete it. People who succumb to this are setting themselves up for failure. Whenever someone feels as if they are going to fail, they tend to postpone the task for as long as possible. This means that they often try to avoid the task all together until completion is absolutely necessary. In doing so, the number of tasks that need to be done increases. However, the time required to complete them does not.
