Julie Jacobson’s presentation, “Celebrating Success: Recognizing Municipal Employees” is centered on the concept of motivating and retaining its employees. The presentation states that recognition influences public employees’ behavior and serves as a strong motivator. Essentially, by recognizing an employee’s hard work, they will become more productive and boost their morale. Jacobson goes on to list the many ways to recognize employees. From a simple “thank you” to handing out official letters, notes, supervisory copied emails, etc. will influence an employee’s behavior for the better. What Drives Success a New York Times article written by two professors and authors Amy Chua and Jed Rubenfield, that claim that success in cultural groups is not just " random " or cultural tradition but it is because of three-character qualities- a quality of being better than everything else, complexity, source of mental worry, and the ability to control sudden desires. Now these qualities are seen in everyday communities and the author highlights that and refers back to how different groups of people related by culture, race, religion, etc. have accessed this formula throughout history. They then refer to major empires and the rising and falling of them in human history. They argue that why the empires commonly fall is because of one or more of the three reasons that drove them to success. The authors of this article use Ethos, Logos, and Pathos to strength and build their claim throughout the article.
Success is a word that really hard to define, because everyone will have a different definition for this word. In fact, there no exact definition for the word "success". For a student, maybe the success means to pass all courses of the semester; for a business man, signing a importance contract and get a lot of money are successes; and for a president, leading the country to develop and make the people have a better life are success. For me, I also have my own definition for the word "success". Recognizing employees for accomplishments such as finishing a major project, reaching sales targets or providing excellent customer service can be an important motivating factor. Set goals for workers to strive for and offer rewards for reaching them. This could be in the form of an employee of the month scheme, a bonus, or a promotion. Some companies conduct meetings where employees are recognised for good work in front of their colleagues. This can help motivate all the workers in the business to strive for success.

A recent study by MarketTools Inc. for Globoforce confirms that a lack of sincere recognition provided to employees is a leading cause of turnover. The study identifies a solid correlation between the level of recognition delivered by managers and the loyalty of their direct reports (Sun). Thus, thank-you notes are cheap and simple yet sincere and an effective way of showing recognition to employees which will increase their loyalty and motivation.
Being recognized in a positive manner by your peers is a morale booster. It gives a sense of accomplishment and works as a strong motivator. When staff can empathize with what another staff member is encountering and show encouragement a sense of trust is built within the department. “Empathizing is operating at a high level of communication. Lastly, employees like every other person seek recognition and appreciation. Therefore, they should be appreciated when they perform exuberantly in their jobs. One needs to clearly convey how an employee’s performance contributed to organizational results. By appreciating them, you are motivating them to do better. Monetary rewards in the form of year-end bonuses are also always a great way to improve the morale of the employees. Recently published literature reveals that there are several key components of any effective reward and recognition program. Multiple authors argue that programs missing any one of these key components will, at best, fail to engage employees, and at worst alienate employees. Every human being needs motivation now and then. Incentives and recognition programs can support you in helping your employees become happier and more productive at work. As a leader, one of the main things to think about is how to recognize an employee for a performance that has exceeded expectations, objectives and goals.
