Across America students are starting to complete assignments all on their phones instead of the traditional computer or paper. The question is, is it appropriate to use cell phones in school, or not? Schools across America are split between allowing cell phones in school or banning them. Co-writer of the article “Students Hail End of Cellphone Ban” states: “Our challenge is to make sure students understand that this is a privilege and not a God-given right” She said. “They use it properly or else”( Brody 2). In the past years, cell phones have become prevalent among nearly every teenager, and they need them to do work. In this day and age it seems almost necessary to have one. Cell phone use in a school setting has emerged as a controversial …show more content…
Author of “Students Hail End of Cellphone Ban” includes: “Many teachers embrace using phones in class to conduct quick surveys, serve as calculators or access the internet”(Brody 3). Cell phones are becoming an essential tool in the classroom because of new capabilities. Teachers can connect more with their students through activities involving cellphones. Cell phones have a sort of “pull” to them, and by using them for school activities, some pay more attention. Brody also adds: “Now there are phone apps that let students connect with interactive whiteboards at the front of the classroom”(Brody 3). The way teenagers are learning is changing with the times. Instead of learning new material through pen and paper, teens can learn it through their phones and participate in activities that utilize them properly and educationally. Author of “Smartphones Go to School”, Doug Arnett, quotes: “Many teachers now want students to use phones for homework and in class;from research to quizzes”(Wells 1). If teachers can encourage students to use their phones to complete class work, they may be more willing. Teens use their phones every day for a variety of things. In the article Teens’ Newest Use for Smartphones? Writing School Papers on Them.” student Samantha DeWitt quotes: ”Oh yeah”, says Samantha Dewitt, a sophomore at King Philip …show more content…
In the article “Is Your Smartphone Hurting Your GPA?”, author Nara Schoenberg states: “In 2011, researchers at California State University reported that students who received a higher number of text messages during a video recorded lecture scored worse on a quiz than those who received or sent few or no text messages”(Schoenberg 2). This argument is inappropriately biased because it didn't specify or include information about using the cell phones for schoolwork. It only displayed why they shouldn't be used in a no-use zone. Schools that allow the use of cell phones for work have different effects on students than rules that don't allow the use of them at all. Had the study been carried out between two groups of students, one that was allowed to use their phones for research and one group that couldn't, the opposition may have a more grounded argument. However, one can see that this opinion has a weak argument because of the lack of information displayed. Overall, cellphones should be allowed in school for academic use because teenagers use them daily. It would work to the advantage of both the students and the teachers to incorporate cell phones with school work. Education will only continue to evolve as the years go on, and it is essential that technology is incorporated along with
Technology is advancing every day. “More than 203 million people in the United States use cell phones” (Castle), but schools expect students not to use it. Cell phones play a huge role in high school
Although phones may be used to help students with work, North Eugene high school should ban phones because how much of a distraction they can be in a classroom. Schools that have banned phone at school, 82% of students have a phone on at school.(Document #3) If North Eugene at least has a policy with not having students bring the phones in class, that will help with test scores and participation in class. “Students with laptops had a lower test result than those without. The reason? They were not paying attention to their teachers. We should expect the same thing from cell phones.” (Document #6) When using technology at school it may help but there also needs to be an extent to where it needs to stop. Phone are not going to help with our
It is a well known fact; using cell phones in school takes away from learning time. I do not think that cell phones should be allowed. Cell phones are fine for outside the classroom, but inside, you’re supposed to be learning. Even though some students think they can use them for good, it can quickly turn into bad. Cell phones cause students to do bad on their work, enables cheating, and can be distracting.
In this article entitled “Why Cellphones should not be Allowed in a School Setting,” the author claims that having or using cellphones has become a growing epidemic nowadays, and schools try to restrict the usage of the phones by imposing authentic rules, which is very beneficial to the students.
Some can argue that cell phone use during school is highly uncivilized but it's extremely useful in many different ways and in different scenarios.Instead of viewing cellphones and other gadgets as negative additive distractions , we should view the positive side of celluar devices. Cell phones can help resolve issues and help make the school environment much easier, however do believe there should be restrictions , for instance not to use a phone while the teacher is having a discussion or teaching lesson. If a student can obey these rules and not use it in a disrespectful manner , then there should not be any issues. Cellular phones should be allowed in schools for threatening emergencies, to avoid double standards between teachers and students and most of all to help students with research purposes.
Cell phones should be allowed in school because they can further students ability to learn and/or stay focused. Audrey Watters wrote, “And that’s probably one of the most important observations: Many students already carry a powerful computing device in their pockets, while oftentimes much of the technology hardware at schools is woefully out-of-date.” This is a major reason why cell phones should be allowed in school because in some schools that do not have the most updated technology there students do on their phones. By allowing cell phones in school, students have access to these powerful devices that can be utilized for free while increasing classroom resources. Watters continued to write, “Schools may find they have equipped student
Imagine a school in which cell phones were not allowed on campus. How would the children contact their parents in the case of an emergency? Perhaps more importantly, how would this affect a child's ability to learn, and their access to knowledge? In an ever changing world most schools have adapted to use technology to their advantage. Whether this be strict times when cell phones are allowed, or more generalized rules, the schools today are able to shape these new devices in their favor. This movement, however, is looked at by some to be a terrible decision, and a hazard to children's growth in the school environment. This essay will go over the three main reasons why cell phones should be allowed and encouraged inside of the school building. The first reason why schools should allow cell phones is because parents need easy contact with their children in all situations. The second reason to allow cell phones is because they improve the learning environment and provide a digital knowledge database. The final reason to allow phones in a school setting is because they can give schools financial and educational freedom opportunities that were never possible before. Cell phones are amazing tools, and schools have all the power in the world to utilize them to their full potential.
In today’s society, smart phones are a part of a student’s average, everyday life. No matter what people are doing, they find time to look at their phone and make a call, read a text, check e-mails, or search something on Google. Even though people find so many uses for them throughout the day, they are a controversial subject to talk about in their use in the classroom. Many schools have policies strictly prohibiting the use of smart phones in school. For schools to ban the use of smart phones is a major mistake. They only look at cell phones as a distraction to students, and don’t understand that this generation is dependent on the technologies of today. What educators need to do is ask themselves
These are just a few of the reasons cell phones should not be banned in schools. Indeed, there are downfalls to a cell phones, but they're also good and very useful during school. Like for example in case of emergency, parent wants to check up on their kid, helpful with school work, and lastly electronics are more fun for kids including their own device. If you can't use you cell phone in your school talk to your principal or teachers and state why they should change their mind and maybe you'll change their
Regina Jones's “Cell phones in the classroom” is an informational article that explains both sides of the issue of cell phones in the classroom. The idea of cell phones in the classroom has been debated for a long time. Jones discusses that the idea of cell phones in the classroom seems like a beneficial idea, but it has many consequences. Jones does not side with a specific opinion, but rather shows how to properly incorporate the idea given its cons. With the correct procedure, cell phones could be a valuable teaching aid to help kids learn in a contemporary way.
Schools keep telling kids to be safe but when it comes to cell phones they want no part of it. Uf cell phones are the newest way to safety, why not allow students to have cell phones in school? Schools should allow cellphones in schools and classrooms. Although some school officials believe cell phones are a distraction, they actually are a great learning resource. Safety is very important when it comes to cellphones in classrooms they are the most helpful safety feature. Cell phones are also a very helpful resource because when teens have to finish a paper and the teen is on their way home from a trip you can just pull out a phone and finish the paper on the go.
Many people believe that bringing cell phones to school may cause distractions. However, a recent study leads more and more people to believe that mobile phones could in fact be a “powerful learning tool” (Docksai), serving as a mobile computer ("Cell Phones in the Classroom” ). Elizabeth Hartnell- Young, a research fellow from the University of Nottingham tracked 331 students from 14 to 16 years old, for learning through cell phones. They used cell phones to make short videos, set homework reminders, record poems, and transfer files from home to school (Docksai). Students described their learning experience as “motivated” (Docksai). Many experts pointed out that students have a “deep comfort level” with mobile phones (Docksai). In other words, students could learn more if they enjoyed what they were doing. An increasing number of teachers have changed their point of view towards cell phones, many now believe that cell phones would exert positive effects on education. For example, some teachers have already started to collect homework online and answer questions through text- messaging. A school in Saskatchewan encouraged students to read and share thoughts about books through their cell phones (Docksai). Furthermore, according to a recent survey, the majority of students could refrain from using cell phones and not be distracted by them in class. In fact, over 71% of students didn’t
Many teachers believe that cell phones don’t belong in a classroom because there are several disadvantages. An example maybe a student who uses a cell phone in class has no intension in listening or paying attention to the teacher. This student has a short attention span who cares about socializing more than his/her education. Cell phones can be very disruptive; they can invade people’s privacy and can also be used as harassment or bullying. The usage of cell phones is creating a huge problem particularly when they are used in school.
Smartphones have become a part of everyone’s body. Almost everything can be done through smart phones. Paying bills, doing grocery, buying food, and more time consuming tasks can all be done almost instantly by smartphones. Many jobs and institutions today do not allow the use of smartphones during a certain time, especially schools. Prohibition of cell phones in school is a good idea to prevent students from getting distracted. However, high school students should be allowed to access their cell phones at school, because high school students are mature enough to use their cell phones productively and beneficially. Having access to internet is very important to high school students. Many students could not afford to have all kinds of devices, such as laptop, tablets, and cell phones. Entirely banning the usage of cell phones can make students hate the school causing them to be more arrogant.
The first and arguably the most important argument for banning phones in school is an improvement in the results. A study made by the Centre for Economic Performance at the London School of Economics scrutinizes the effect cell phones have on students grades, the results show something remarkable. The study found that after schools prohibited mobile phones, the examination scores of students aged 16 improved by 6.4%. The researchers calculate that this
