Piracy on the open seas is becoming more threatening by the day. Ships are being hijacked and being sold for ransom for millions of dollars. With ways that are being developed to help protect ships such as fire hoses, flares, and barbed wire along the rails of the boats. They still do not guarantee a safe ride for the cargo and crew onboard. Cargo ships should be allowed to carry weapons to protect from pirates and other intruders.

Some say that there is a very slim chance of a ship being attacked by pirates. There are over 50,000 cargo ships all around the world so what are the chances?(Curry n.p.) But, more and more ships are being captured around the world each day and those ships need to be protected 271 ships were hijacked off the coast of Somalia in 2009, which is over 500 million dollars is cargo.(Gale n.p). Because of this, the shipping companies are losing money by trying to transport things to people in need. According to the United States Cargo industry, each shipment of cargo costs between 5-10 million dollars. By placing armed guards on all ships, it will save million of dollars each year to protect the boat. (U.S Cargo n.p).The average price of a security system such as electric fencing around a boat can cost up to $200,000 to install and maintain. But electricity is dangerous because of the ocean water splashing on the deck which may electrocute people in that area.(The Telegraph n.p). Another method of repelling pirates is a net that is dropped over the side and gets stuck in the propeller of the pirates boat.
