Piracy on the open seas is becoming more threatening by the day. Ships are being hijacked and being sold for ransom for millions of dollars. With ways that are being developed to help protect ships such as fire hoses, flares, and barbed wire along the rails of the boats. They still do not guarantee a safe ride for the cargo and crew onboard. Cargo ships should be allowed to carry weapons to protect from pirates and other intruders.
Some say that there is a very slim chance of a ship being attacked by pirates. There are over 50,000 cargo ships all around the world so what are the chances?(Curry n.p.) But, more and more ships are being captured around the world each day and those ships need to be protected 271 ships were hijacked off the coast of Somalia in 2009, which is over 500 million dollars is cargo.(Gale n.p). Because of this, the shipping companies are losing money by trying to transport things to people in need. The famous story of Captain Phillips is very extraordinary because their ship was carrying food, water, and medical aid supplies to people in Africa. (US. Navy n.p)

By placing armed guards on all ships, it will save million of dollars each year to protect the boat. (U.S Cargo n.p).The average price of a security system such as electric fencing around a boat can cost up to $200,000 to install and maintain. But electricity is dangerous because of the ocean water splashing on the deck which may electrocute people in that area.(The Telegraph n.p). Another method of repelling pirates is a net that is dropped over the side and gets stuck in the propeller of the pirates boat. Under The Black Flag , a book written by David Cordingly expressed the reality and myths behind piracy. He clearly states in the introduction of the book that his aim “is to examine the popular image of pirates today, to find out where this image came from, and to compare it with the real world of the pirates” (Cordingly xiv). Along with his aim his thesis is also stated in the introduction of his book, which essentially states that the views by everyday people of pirates consists of a mixture of facts, and many other things such as romantic novels and films. All vessels and ports are vulnerable to bombings or WMD attacks. Because of their locations and volume of business ports, cruise ship and ferry terminals are challenging to protect from security threats. They are usually in areas that consist of a lot of people, which makes them a target for terrorism. Additionally, often times these areas also have liquefied natural gas facilities which will make them more vulnerable and attract terrorists. The bombing of the Navy Destroyer, the USS Cole illustrates that any vessel can be attacked. Terrorists utilized a small boat to serve as an improvised explosive device as they navigated it into the ship while it was refueling.
The brand of justice pirates toward vessels they captured was something I found fascinating. For example, on page 88, the incident involving the capture of Captain Snelgraves vessel by the pirate Thomas Cocklyn. Initially Snelgrave resisted Cocklyns takeover so as Cocklyns crew overpowers Snelgraves and is taken by the pirates. Certain that Snelgrave will be killed or beaten for resisting, Snelgraves crew comes to their captains defense thus Cocklyn sparring the respected captains life. Because of the degree of respect Snelgraves had, Cocklyn not often seeing a government captain holding such admiration from a crew offered him a new ship and profits from a captured slave ship for his return to England. This story really caught my attention because of the level of hospitality pirates show to a captain who held such respect with his own crew.
Also included in this book is what happened to pirates when they were caught by the government. If convicted of piracy it often meant a sure death by hanging. Many times the bodies of pirates were hung over harbors and around ports as a warning of the consequences of being a pirate. The government hoped that these drastic measures would help quell the raids of pirates. So this book lets us know that even though pirates have a romanticized appearance, in all reality they were criminals who had their own way of life.
Ship breaking is an iffy topic and could be seen as more of a con more than anything. Ship breaking is dangerous and unhealthy, and is usually done under the radar very unsafely and people are hurting themselves so much just to break the ship and gain a little more money. The people that break the huge ships tend to be people from non-Westernized countries. It is expensive and hard to do safely and properly, so people usually fly under the radar to get cheap laborers to do it. These people subject themselves to extremely unsafe conditions that could harm their health, bodies, and most importantly, their very lives. It is easy to die breaking ships. The pollution is horrid, as the ships aren't usually cleaned and drained of harmful chemicals when it is supposed to be law that they should- as said before, the ship breaking business operates a lot under the legal radar of countries. Plus, little profit is made other than making room for more ships and recycling what we once used. But the recycling is the pro itself here in this huge con. These people who break the ships use almost the entire ship for what they need. Piracy has existed since the earliest days of ocean travel, for a range of personal and economic reasons. However, one of the major reasons why piracy was wide spread and rampant in the 16th, 17th and early 18th centuries was Great Britain’s endorsement and usage of piracy as an asset; in wars fought in the New World. Maritime piracy in recent weeks has been on the rise around the Gulf of Aden, the Somali Basin, and the Indian Ocean. As stated in the text book, “In the first six months of 2011, there were 266 pirate attacks on the world’s seas. More than 60 percent of those were by Somali pirates who are increasingly bold in their actions.” For example, in 2011 there was an attack by Somali pirates which shocked most.
