Cerebrovascular Accident (Stroke) [9] - Considering some of the primary causes of cerebrovascular accident [pg 104]; do you believe recreation therapy is more effective as a preventative approach, or in treatment of symptoms?
I believe recreation therapy is more effective in the treatment of symptoms of a cerebrovascular accident and the prevention of secondary problems such as depression and lack of independence.
Porter 2015, mentions any individual can reduce the risk of stroke by eating healthy, have a low salt intake, exercise regularly, keep a healthy weight, avoid tobacco products and drugs, monitor alcohol intake, properly use medication if provided, and stay informed about your health issues.
Based on this, I do believe a recreation therapist

In our long term care facility, we are drafting a policy on the use of marijuana. This is very challenging because we have no precedent to follow.
Has anyone else faced a similar situation where they are forced to deal the upcoming changes towards recreational drug use?
If some of the fundamental principles of recreation therapy include personal choice, autonomy, agency, and quality of life; what role do you see recreation therapists playing in terms of pain management? [pg 291]
The recreation therapist plays a very important role when it comes to pain management. The RT must make the client aware of the potential choice of pain management such as: relaxation techniques, massage, and a variety of exercises including heated pools. In addition to awareness, the RT must also assist with accessing legal pain management options. I say legal because I also believe the RT must educate themselves on the use and availability of recreational drug such as marijuana. I watched an excellent documentary called the ‘The Culture High’. With scientist studying the many ways in which water can heal the body, there is a lack of study on just why people are turning to water for therapy, even when a pool is not within a short distance, or of any convenience. As aquatic therapy being labeled one of the best forms of rehabilitation for people with injuries like: spinal inflammation, balance troubles, and more, by doctors, this paper aims to focus on the voice of the patients and how they feel aquatic therapy effects them? The study done concentrates on an aquatic therapy center built by Elizabeth Taylor in a city named Culver City, the heart of Los Angeles, CA. Ms. Taylor saw a need for aquatic therapy in Los Angeles, and conveniently built a center that could benefit all, as the city is surrounded and infused with people of all walks of life. Ms. Taylor serviced the center and community with top doctors, therapist, and all the tools needed for people to get back on their feet. The paper will be drawing from participant observations, numerous interviews from rehabilitation professionals and patients, and scholarly articles to give insight on why so many people are turning towards aquatics for their rehab journey. Through my data I will discuss that though aquatic arena can make exercises more tolerable, mobility freer, and provide rapid rehabilitation, it is not for the best form of therapy for any and everyone.
Everyday so many people are conflicted with injuries that may or may not change their life and find themselves in need of someone to help them to get back on their feet. Recreational therapists are that someone who will be a shoulder for anyone to lean on that needs a little extra support, both figuratively and literally. Recreational therapists must be supportive and patient and kind in order for the treatments to be effective in keeping the patients' happy and feeling taken care of. Being a go getter is such a big part of being
A Career in Athletic Training and a Careers in Recreational Therapy are very different from each other. Athletic trainers are highly qualified; they have multiskilled health care experts who work as a member of a collaborative in the professional medical team. However, they work together with doctors and other healthcare specialists to prevent injury, illness, wellness protection and clinical evaluation. For example, if you become an athletic trainer, the job possibilities are excellent. But, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, this field is projected to grow 21% between 2014 and 2024, much faster than the average for all occupations. In fact, athletic training is identified by the American Medical Association, Health Resources
Recreation Therapists require an extraordinary amount of patience. Whether the patients are physically injured or mentally and emotionally wounded, the therapists must have patience. It can be a very slow but rewarding road to recovery for anyone they might help. Recreation Therapists work with situations that can be extremely serious and some that are not as serious. But, no matter the condition of the patient, they have to be compassionate.
To understand stereotypes about of a recreational therapist, one must learn what therapeutic recreation does and how it benefits patients. Recreational therapists are people that plan, direct, recreational – based treatment people for people with illnesses and disabilities. There are myths about recreational therapists that come from a society not understanding the term “recreational therapy”. Recreational therapists play an active role in helping people young or old learn to carry daily activities to aid them in their daily lives.

Therapeutic recreation practitioners work in many areas and with a variation of populations from children to older adults, individuals with mental health issues, addictions, workplace wellness, community settings, assisted living, long-term and residential care. Assessments are used to appropriately meet the needs of the populations and clients that are served, but due to the structure of the health care system in Canada, there are individuals who are living in long-term and residential care whose needs are not being met. Typically, in long-term and residential care the
Among the various contributors to ischemic stroke are high risk environmental factors of physical and social determinants. Recreational therapy has been a constant form of happiness throughout the past four years of my life. As a freshman in college, I came to Temple University undecided on what I wanted to major in for the next four years. Only knowing that I wanted to study something pertaining to health and well-being, I checked out my options and instantly fell in love with the idea of studying recreation therapy. By doing so, I would be able to directly work with individuals, promoting health through recreation and leisure involvement.
Recreation therapy can be done in many different settings that can help make the elders life more positive. The rules and regulations in long-term health care settings have changed in the post 10 years. The staff who work in the nursing homes are required to care for mental and physical health problems of the elder, some of the residents are expected to go home, while others are needed to stay and learn how to reduce aggression, keep confortable, and improving in ADL function. Whatever the goal is nurses are needed in these services and also needed to give medications and meet the needs of residents in their
Along with the profession and settings of Therapeutic Recreation, the types of patients that are treated must be discussed. Recreational therapists treat a wide range of people that need health services, such as individuals with mental health problems, addictions, developmental disabilities, and need for general medicine on a daily basis (ATRA 2016). There are signs everywhere that people in health services want to improve their quality of lives (Ashby, Kottman, & DeGraaf 1999), however, I feel as though people, at times, do not want to be involved in therapy, even when they should, because of their “ego” (Guzman 2011); many scholars have agreed upon this idea.

Ten years ago, my grandfather was diagnosed with a degenerative muscle disorder that slowly decreased his ability to walk and use his hands. I saw him go from walking on his own to being bed ridden and unable to do anything independently. He was the man that introduced me to many of the recreation activities that I still engage in to this day. I enjoyed helping him figure out different ways he could do his hobbies such as painting, computers and going for walks as he slowly declined. After he passed away a few years later, it was time for me to start applying to Colleges and Universities. I found the program description for Therapeutic
It is the job of the physical therapist to help their client recover from functional deficits. Lingering pain following injury or surgery is often a prohibitive factor to the rehabilitation process. Most people have experienced the inability to function at their best capacity when their back is hurting or their head is pounding. Everyone knows what a bother pain can be. “No pain, no gain” is the mantra of many in their attempt to overcome their pain, only to find that provoking pain begets even more pain.
