Cerebrovascular Accident (Stroke) [9] - Considering some of the primary causes of cerebrovascular accident [pg 104]; do you believe recreation therapy is more effective as a preventative approach, or in treatment of symptoms?

I believe recreation therapy is more effective in the treatment of symptoms of a cerebrovascular accident and the prevention of secondary problems such as depression and lack of independence.

Porter 2015, mentions any individual can reduce the risk of stroke by eating healthy, have a low salt intake, exercise regularly, keep a healthy weight, avoid tobacco products and drugs, monitor alcohol intake, properly use medication if provided, and stay informed about your health issues.

In our long term care facility, we are drafting a policy on the use of marijuana. This is very challenging because we have no precedent to follow.

Has anyone else faced a similar situation where they are forced to deal the upcoming changes towards recreational drug use?

If some of the fundamental principles of recreation therapy include personal choice, autonomy, agency, and quality of life; what role do you see recreation therapists playing in terms of pain management? [pg 291]

The recreation therapist plays a very important role when it comes to pain management. The RT must make the client aware of the potential choice of pain management such as: relaxation techniques, massage, and a variety of exercises including heated pools. In addition to awareness, the RT must also assist with accessing legal pain management options. I say legal because I also believe the RT must educate themselves on the use and availability of recreational drug such as marijuana. I watched an excellent documentary called the ‘The Culture High’.
