Coming to college as an adult, we have many expectations and preconceptions of what college will or will not be. The expectations we have can influence our college life for the better or the worse. My experience since starting college has been an interesting one. People have misconceptions about college because they do not know what to expect. After doing some research, I have concluded that there are three major factors that are often misunderstood about college life. The first is the financial aspect of college. Second, is the relationship between the professors and students. Third is time management. These three factors play an important role in why people are afraid to go down the path to college.

For first year students coming straight from high school, college life can either be very exciting or overwhelming depending on how well one prepares for it. Some have the notion that college is fun and is all about partying, while some believe that it is an environment in which they can achieve the ultimate freedom thus escape the stringent rules made by their parents at home. Being a non-traditional college student is hard for anyone, for someone who gets anxious easily it can be even harder. I remember my first day of college, I had spent the previous week sick and could barely talk because I still had a lingering cough. Pacing back and forth at home, I contemplated if it was too late to back out and quit school before I had even started. I changed my clothes several times and thought about giving up so much that I was nearly late to my first class. Additionally, in all the excitement I only took the time to know when my classes started and not where they were actually held. I had no idea why I was even here.

It is evident the American Community College faces political challenges in the 21st century. According to the America Association of Community College (2017), this is a time of political transition where there are many ambiguities for higher education policymaking surrounding national perceptions of community colleges, funding, infrastructure, immigration, tax reform, accountability, etc. Altbach et al., 1999 (should I include page number (pg 298)) revealed that leaders, such as effective college presidents using a political frame see the inherent politics of the organization, build up plans, muster partnerships, and focus on negotiation and conflict to achieve noble purposes (Altbach et al., 1999 and Bolman et al.,2013, pp216).

In life everyone tells you to take every opportunity possible. In my life I take this very seriously. I believe it is important to utilize all of your resources. Deciding to attend Stokes Early College was one of my biggest decisions ever. When I began my early college experience, it started to shape my life in a different kind of way. Coming to early college allows for students to take college level courses at such a young age. Taking college level courses allow opportunity for students to mature.

Going to college allows for many opportunities to open up in life. Society is changing at a very rapid rate. College is a very difficult time for nearly everyone, as Charles Murray who published an article on should the Obama Generation Drop out also states that “A large majority of young people do not have the intellectual ability to do genuine college-level work” (95). Attending college is not for everyone, but It can teach you to learn how to become independent, develop discipline, evolve new life skills, and learn how to balance a social life versus student life. The experiences you obtain and gain from attending college can lead you to learn how to live your life within the college environment in a way that creates harmony with who you are. It is a time of trial and error until you find what works for you. Eventually harmony is found by choosing a major that coincides in a positive way with the person you are. Once this is found, you will be able to establish a system of studying and learning that works for how your mind works. It is natural that your life will be in disharmony when the circumstances in your life change dramatically, such as when you go to college, but your life should eventually return to being less stressful. Moving on from high school and taking the next steps to go to college have always been scary for me. About a year ago, I didn’t know where I was going or what my major was going to be. I just knew that I had no other option but college after high school. Now that I’m two days away from moving in for college, I have a couple of things that seem scary.

The most pressing issue facing high school seniors today is supporting themselves in college, because when attending college, a student will spend a great deal of money each year. When a student decides to go to college, they will have to pay a large amount of money to attend the college of their choice. Sometimes the college of their choice is too much for them to afford. Depending where they attend college can be a factor depending on if they can afford the necessary items, such as books and school supplies.

The first year of college comes with many changes and challenges. These changes can include the food in the cafeteria, study habits, time management skills, and much more. Every student has to find their own way to handle the first year and determine what works best for them. For many the most essential change is living away from home. Campus life provides opportunities to become a part of a unique, diversified community. With these opportunities come challenges, such as having a roommate, being away from one’s parents, and determining self-limits.

As I graduated high school, I thought college would just be yet another four years of high school, and I was wrong. College opens many new doors in a young man or woman’s life. There are new responsibilities and pressures that you will have to deal with, and with more freedom these responsibilities and pressures can be difficult to handle. College has changed a great deal over the years and these changes, such as more freedoms, make college a much more challenging experience. You need to start preparing for college now by making yourself more responsible and having more self-control.
