Challenge is an inevitable fate in human’s life. People often find themselves in challenges of different magnitude unexpectedly. Challenges can be as easy as waking up early in the morning to a situation that could put one’s life in jeopardy. People always have a yearning to advance themselves in whatever things they want to pursue in life, but nothing in this world seems to be achievable without some sort of challenge on the way. Although people these days tend to perceive the negative influence of challenges, several people relish the positive sways, and believe challenges illustrate their true self or their ability to achieve their full potential. Out of all, challenge prepares people for tomorrow by making sure they have efficiently accomplished the demands of today. That is why people who embrace today’s challenges are likely to embark on tomorrow’s opportunities.
In my society I hear people talking about their problem and the hardships they have encountered. As a Highschooler and rising college freshman, I myself have had numerous difficulties. It is typical for a person including myself trying to take the easy way out or restrain oneself from challenges, but I found far less of what truly is considered a success. After all Success is a manifestation of a resolved challenge. That is why a quote by Booker T. Washington “Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed.”
Throughout the past couple of months my fellow peers and I have been studying the topic ‘challenge’ and how it affects our lives and people around us. In our everyday lives we are confronting challenges, some are as small as walking up a few steps, and some are larger and more challenging that could be life or death circumstances.
Everyone faces struggles in their life. Some allow those struggles to help build them as a person, others let those struggles tear them down. For me, I allowed my struggles to help me develop academically and personally. Without struggle there is no progress.
Everyone has obstacles in life, but find different ways of overcoming the adversity. When you overcome obstacles, you either have a negative or positive attitude. But in the end, you usually end up happy with your outcome. People overcome challenges by not giving up, having a good attitude, and being confident. First, not giving up helps people get over challenges because when you give up, you're throwing away your idea and thinking that it may not change the world or it won't have an effect on anyone.
Life is full of challenges. In the stories, “Breaking Through Uncertainty-Welcoming Adversity” and “Neighbours,” written by Jim McCormick and Lien Chao, the main characters illustrate benefits derived from taking risks. Even though both people in these texts undergo personal challenges, in “Neighbours” the character, Sally, receives greater benefits from taking risks than McCormick in “Breaking Through Uncertainty-Welcoming Adversity”.
Many challenges hold us back but when we overcome them, we are left with a greater prize which is making ourselves a better
Have you ever taken on a challenge for personal growth? In the Epic Journey Unit, there are many examples of what drives people to take on a challenge. People often take on challenges to prove someone wrong or for personal growth. The pursuit of proving someone wrong may motivate an individual to take on a challenge. For example, in Timbuktu, “Still when a person tells me I can’t do something, I’ll want to do it all the more” (Salak 5).
“Accept the challenge so that you can feel the exhilaration of victory.” Stated by George S. Patton, a senior officer of the United States Army, trying to explain that if you try to achieve difficult goals and complete them, you will feel success and feel good about yourself. You will feel that because you knew that you have put in the work to complete that and you have felt better than you ever felt before. Challenges are always needed because they help you gain confidence, grow, learn, and excel in whatever you are doing. They are needed because when you excel, you want to do more challenging things because you want to feel that success again. This means that when you have tough goals and complete it, you will feel success and grow as an individual and want to challenge yourself even more.
Time goes by fast when things are getting done. Experiences are etched into people’s minds when they share moments of love or hatred. Martin Luther King Jr. once said in a speech “I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant.” Through any measure of suffering and pain, people who pledge themselves to be stronger than before are able to defeat a failure mindset. The books Push by Sapphire and The Power Of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business by Charles Duhigg both demonstrate that the single indicator of human growth is to advance and push one’s limit by changing a habit or becoming motivated through
Therefore, the opportunity itself seemed incredibly interesting. It certainly presented a number of challenges. However, we could argue that these obstacles lead to self-development and improvement. Thus, hopefully, my life can present additional opportunities where a challenge could become an advantage.
“Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” What the Roman poet Horace was saying was that when there is an obstacle in our way, our true colors will radiate. I could not agree more. When we as human beings feel passionate about achieving a goal, we may learn something new of ourselves, maybe a new trait that we did not know we possessed, when we reach new heights we did not know we could push ourselves towards. Challenges are similar to tests. Challenges are faced every day, but how we respond to them determines how strong we really are. Prime examples are superheroes and students that move dramatically.
Everyday people encounter challenges that stand in their way of achieving their goals, but with sheer determination most accomplish their mission. In the short story “A Worn Path” written by Eudora Welty, Phoenix Jackson, the main character, has a mission to complete while confronting many challenges. The challenges that Phoneix must overcome on her journey to get medicine for her grandson are those of humiliation, old age, and numerous of others. Throughout the story Phoenix overcome these challenges by using her ability to preserve, her need to find humor in the day to day aspects of life, her determination, and most of all the love she has for her loved in. These are just a few characteristics that both Phoenix and I have in common.
A personal challenge I have faced this year and in the past, has been in creating more connections with other people around me. I have found it difficult meeting new people and maintaining that connection. I do not aspire to create relationships with every person I meet but it would be useful to actually know more people and be able to formulate a professional conversation with them. To sum up, I would like to expand my circle of connections in order to provide myself with opportunities and the ability to hear different perspectives. The first habit discussed in class is to be proactive. After discussing the meaning and being given examples of what being proactive is, to me it basically means to understand that one has control of ones actions. It is in the conscious mind whether or not certain decisions are made and as a result it is us that have the power over our lives. I find that this habit could help me in solving my problem by allowing me to realize more and more that it is I whom needs to take control of my social life and understand that if I truly want to better my social connections with other people, I have to be the one that takes action. Nothing and no one else is going to have the control I have over myself, regardless if they remind me day after day to attend social events or join different clubs. I will always have the power. I believe it is essential that I understand habit number one before even thinking about moving on to habit number two because habit
In life, we all go through challenges and it’s either we face them or walk away from it. Growing up, people will always have different ways of handling things that happens in their life. We can’t know what could happen and how we handle it because life is unexpected. As I see it is that if you tend to keep making the same mistakes, you’ll never get passed your past and if you learn from all of your mistakes, you can move forward with your life. Everyone has faced their challenges in their own way and not everything in life will be easy because I can tell you right now that no one’s life is perfect. Everyone has their flaws, but they're perfect in their own way possible.
‘It is when I struggle that I strengthen. It is when challenged to my core that I learn the depth of who I am.’ I kept on repeating this to myself waiting for my campus interview in the final year. Sitting there with fervor, I entered the room with utmost confidence. The whole interview was not just technical but challenged my grit, determination and presence of mind. And after coming out of the interview, I just knew I had grabbed the opportunity. That day taught me; challenges can make you or break you; it all depends on you.
Challenges are the structure of self-development, so people could to develop critical-thinking skills to overcome those challenges. For example, workers are constantly encountering new set of challenges. The challenges help workers to gain more knowledge of their career and will prepare them for future challenges. According to a journal written by Doody discussed on jumping out of comfort zone in a medical field, “issues pertaining to patient safety and operative outcome targets may restrict the amount of autonomy that a trainee may be given to move from his or her comfort zone to the learning zone” (Doody). This prepares workers to encounter challenges, and how they will handle the situation either on their own or help from others. By doing so medical trainees will be able to adjust to their jobs on a medical field. It can help them learn and develop new tactics dealing with the situation because “advanced learners who require more complex, unpredictable challenges with higher stakes to maximize their learning” (Doody). People who are set in complex challenges will be able to handle the situation, which it can increase their ability to handle similar challenges they will encounter in the future. Comfort zones limits people from handling challenges, but enforcing challenges within their work can help them overcome the comfort zone. Challenges are necessary for people
