The 1920’s is seen as the great decade of innovation, progress, and economic growth. It is considered a decade in which people could thrive off of. It was the beginning of women’s rights and their participation in politics. The jazz era also thrived but also had some obstacles along the way. During the 1920’s there were innovations of home appliances and the assembly line that was used to manufacture cars. However, these innovations and “progress” only benefitted a specific group of individuals, and those who were not in this group of people, were badly impacted. Although the 1920’s brought progressive changes, such as innovations and economic growth for the higher class Americans, immigrants and individuals of lesser status were not thriving
Between the 1870s and 1920s, America went through various periods of advancement in the workforce. It began in the Industrial Revolution where America expanded through one of the most profound economic revolutions experienced by any country in the world. It was a period of time where there was an abundance of resources, increasing labor force, international market for manufactured goods and ways to invest in the capital. This radical transition from an agricultural based economy to a booming industrialist one with factories, mining and railroad construction brought forth a new working class. This working class consisted of men, women, children and immigrants who poured in from all over the world for employment.
As a nation coming out of a devastating war, America faced many changes in the 1920s. It was a decade of growth and improvements. As immigrants fled from Europe, the economy improved, and new machines offered convenience and luxury from the kitchen to the streets. However, with all change comes opposition. The 1920s revealed a conflict between traditional America and the new attitude and lifestyle through the changing role of women, continued dominance of Christian values, and racism.

After World War I ended, the 1920’s brought on dramatic political and social changes. For most people, the 1920’s brought them more conflict. They did not like the new changes and were trying to keep them from happening. However, for a small group of young people the 1920’s was a great time to make progress and move forward from the conservative norm. After women got suffrage, they pushed through the double standards and tried and got jobs in factories and offices, instead of only doing domestic work. African Americans pushed through the discrimination they were facing and moved to the northern states, where they got better jobs and better opportunities to pursue their dreams in literature, art, music, and stage performance.

During the period of the 1920s the “American way of life” was redefined because of the rapid growth of technology. The 20s where a time where the idea of “making things easier” came about in the American society. The mass production of cars made it easier to get around. Telephones, radios, and television made communication easier for the consumer but also the companies putting out products. Washing machines, vacuum cleaners made it less time consuming to do household chores and gave women more time to do other things. The idea of credit made it much easier to obtain these products without having to have the money right away.
