Abstract
This paper focuses on the intensity of preference for sons over daughters in anticipation of old age security both physically and financially, and its impact on the care and support/ well-being of the elderly in Nigeria in general, and in particular among the Yoruba of Southwest. The paper examines the impact of social change on child sex preference as old age security. Before delving into the theme of the paper, the concept of social change was briefly discussed. The reasons for having children generally are discussed, child sex

For example, an older person who was hard to get along with is more likely to lack support than the cheerful old person who gets along well with family and neighbours (Peil, 1991). All these are important variables, which determine whether individuals will receive adequate care and support from family and society. It is evident from the various literature that, very little attention has been paid to older people of modern industrializing societies of the world. In Nigeria for example, as well as in most developing countries, the need to plan for the welfare of older persons has received very little attention. There are clear evidences of lack of formal social support services for older people in Nigeria, such as Social Securiy, Pension, Health Insurance Scheme, Old Peoples Home, etc. One of the explanatory factors arises from the belief that the existing extended family system generally protects and provides for the welfare of old people in rural and agricultural societies. Hence, where an older person is childless, his/her brothers or sisters or even the children of his siblings are believed to be responsible for his/her maintenance. This may not be unconnected with why most policies, programmes and projects in the developing countries such as Nigeria have been concentrated on the children and the youths at the expense of older persons in the country. Both national and international organizations are seen working tirelessly
Three theory apply to aging the elderly. Our first theory is called structural-functional theory. As the author of our textbook, John Macionis, agrees that this approach views society as a complex, but interconnected system, where each part works together as a functional whole (p.16). The author of the book applies this approach to the aging topic and show how the "operations" of the society can be confused and disordered on the fact that people grow old and die ultimately. As a result of that the society dissociate older people from important tasks or disband them from responsibilities as they grow older (p.439). Drawing on the structural-functional theory, the disengagement theory illustrates that as people grow old the society eliminates them from their responsibilities and their
Our society nowadays discriminates the elderly and they are being ill treated. However Primitive agrarian cultures very existence depended upon the knowledge earned from experience, valued their elders, but even they were o moved to killing the non productive members of society because of harsh conditions of subsistence living. According to an analysis done by Seth Stephens-Davidowitz, for every ten U.S. google search requests about males being overweight, there are seventeen searches about girls being overweight, but in reality, boys are nine percent more probable to being overweight than girls (Gonchar). There are countless kinds of gender double standards in society, including the standards parents hold their children to. It is no secret that parents dream for their daughters to be attractive and their sons to be athletic. How else do these standards become apparent in a child’s upbringing? In an investigative paper, The Gender Double Standards in Parenting Attitudes, Meeso Caponi Ro, William G. Axinn, and Linda Young-DeMarco state, “We differentiate dating, sex, and premarital cohabitation from marital and childbearing behavior to investigate differences within the courtship and family formation domain.” (Axinn). There are different standards for boys and girls when it comes down to relationships and sex as well. Parents tend to be more lenient when it comes to their boy’s romantic relationships and stricter with their daughters. “A new study from Netmums reveals that 88 per cent of mums admitted that they treated their sons and daughters differently despite thinking that this was wrong.” (The Gender). Parents don’t want to admit they treat their kids differently, because then issues of favoritism or unfair treatment can occur, but by human
From the moment of conception, people face an array of changes both physically and psychologically until death. Lifespan development is the name psychologists have given to the physical and cognitive changes that occur throughout a person’s life and one important issue in the field of Life-Span Development is the topic of the elderly and the struggles that they face. This following issue affects me personally because I see it every day at an acute care hospital where I work. I have observed how their family members treat some of them. How they ultimately become a heavy responsibility to their family members, making them feel melancholy about their age and life. Some families are caring to their elderly family member while others begin to
Age Discrimination. Most of the elderlies shared that they have lost their job or cannot find work because of their age-related limitations. As a result, they tend to experience financial difficulty which can significantly impact their overall well-being specifically the inability to sustain their basic needs like food, home and medicine and inclination to the development of mental health concerns. Elderlies who
This paper comprises of an interview with an older adult on certain areas regarding her life, including: demographics, health, self-concept, social support, home environment, interpersonal and life satisfaction. In this paper also, I compare and contrast a particular lifestyle of my patient with that of a recent research article. Mrs N is a 86 year old woman born in 1931. She is Nigerian and currently lives in Nigeria. The education system is different in Nigeria, but if converted to the US system, her highest level of education is a high school diploma. She hasn’t been professionally employed, but she mentioned that in her younger days, she was an “all-round business woman.” She was an international trader that sold foodstuffs and Nigerian
The World Health Organization estimates that 200 million of the 355 million people older than 65 years are in the developing world. Adding that with the already developed world it is prevalent that coordinated healthcare is increasingly relevant. According to NCBI “In addition to the health issues, which are the same as elsewhere, elderly people in developing countries have become especially vulnerable because of the rapid social changes occurring in many of these countries.” The geriatric population in developing countries enjoyed considerable status, respect, care, and social and psychological support from their families but recently migration, urbanization, changes in value systems and aspirations, changes in the role of women, and the breakdown of the family system have eroded traditional familial support, have left elderly people poor, uncared for, and without power or influence. Sadly, in many countries there is almost no social support for elderly people outside the family. Except for a tiny minority who have worked in the organized sector and so receive pensions, economic support does not
Some of the researchers found that the boys have more adjusted problems while some of the researchers found that girls faces. Promptly taking after separation, Kaye found that both young men and young ladies demonstrated poorer execution on accomplishment tests contrasted with kids from in place families. Then again, by the fifth year taking after separation, young men's evaluations and accomplishment tests were antagonistically influenced, while young ladies' were most certainly not. Additionally, Hetherington et al found that, promptly taking after the separation, young men and young ladies encountered some interruption in play circumstances,
Natalie and Carlos are excited because today when they kick the soccer ball it will reveal the gender of their baby they are expecting: it’s a girl. As new parents, they can’t wait to love and raise their little one. However, if they live in Washington their baby will have the possibility of learning how to identify her gender that may not align with family values and respect to their Christian-based foundation. This lesson can begin as early as kindergarten. This goes against many family absolute values and should not be taught at public schools.
As an adult, transitioning into old age can be difficult for some people. The unknown, lack of responsibilities, frustrations, and new dependence is sure to make the process more undesirable; then, the added stress of income instability would appear to be unbearable. With the increasing number of elders and limited Social Security funds, there will be more needs for elderly income support. With this notion in mind, a plan must be developed to meet the financial needs of this population. There are some under the impression that family members of the elderly should be responsible for taken care of their loved ones, while others feel that the elderly population should be allowed to maintain their independence and live their
Unlike the United States where the elderly are put into assistive living or nursing homes, the concept of an extended family still lives on in developing countries like India. Treating the aging and elderly by putting them in a nursing home or hospice care is about the same as killing them. In India, after a certain age the parents become the child’s responsibility, and the child is expected to be able to support his parents.
Nowadays, the isolation of elderly people is becoming an undeniable worldwide fact in our societies, especially, in some countries with the fast development of economy background which like China and India. In these countries, both of them have high increasing rate of economy and they have high increasing rate of population of elderly people as well. As the matter of fact, the high increasing of economy is shaping a faster life style in these countries’ societies. However, in the meantime, the high population of elderly people does not urge them to have consideration for caring of elderly people. In these countries, people started to focus more on their careers, business and life quality rather than their family member, especially, the caring of elderly people. For the elderly people, they are becoming one of the biggest group that who are being ignored most in families. And because of lacking communication with family members and also with the growth of the senility, elderly people are living on the fringes and the solution for this problem is obvious: family members need to pay more attention on elderly people and spend time with them to help them to realize that they are not useless and they are always part of family.
In my opinion I do think that the attitudes and gender identity statements that is discussed in this discussion question still exist today in our society. I think that this exist because I have heard my aunts and grandmother say the some of the statements that is listed in this discussion question. I think that caregivers and educators response should be that they are exploring their environment therefore let them learn through play. We as adults should promote safe physical; and motor development in children. Our textbook mentions that “ knowledge of expected patterns and sequences of physical and motor development helps adults to appreciate each child’s unique capabilities and interest and gives direction to the provision of growth-enhancing experiences for children”(The Young Child Development from Prebirth Through Age Eight, n.d). Therefore we as adults must must allow the child to engage in play if its not a safety issue. I think that if the child is not given the opportunity to enhance their developmental skills then the adult can hinder their developmental capabilities and needs.
This body of literature proves the sexual orientation of parents does not effect their kids sexual orientation. These studies have their strengths, but also they have their weaknesses. There are three main concerns and limitations of this body of research as a whole. One, all this data is primarily based on middle to upper class white people. The study of the 27 lesbian, 29 gay, and 50 heterosexual that had parents and caretakers fill our inventories was 85% white, and the mean income was 160K (Farr et al., 2010). The Golombok and Tasker (1996) longitudinal study of children from lesbian mothers had sample that was 91% white, only 4 non-whites were in the study. Furthermore, the study focused on the romantic relationships and sexual behavior
Individuals in Nigeria think which the male is actually the mind of the household and we come across the female as being a helper to the male, every Nigerian female is seeking a responsible male, a male that's in a position to make choices in dire circumstances. Girls
