“You don't understand the power of loss when it first hits you like a baseball coming fast from an out-of-control pitcher. You reel back stinging from the blow.” (Bauer,162). Throughout the novel Hope Was Here we see characters go through struggles and gain strength to overcome them. In our everyday lives we have struggles that we also have to overcome. In the novel Hope Was Here, one of the characters Braverman has to choose his family or education. The character Addie, faces the struggle of miscarrying three babies. In my life I have struggles and so do the people around me. For instance, my grandma went through the struggle of losing her husband. From this novel it is learned that if there's no struggle there's no strength.
Braverman is one of the many characters that went through hardship that needed to be overcame. Braverman’s father left him and his family at a young age. Braverman’s mom needed surgery, so after the surgery him and his family were broke. Braverman had to choose a job to save money for his family over his education. Throughout the novel he was working and saving as much money as he could. In the book it states, “He's staying home to help support his mom and sisters. His dad walked out on the family.” (Bauer, 94). This shows how Braverman is a hard worker. Braverman eventually over the course of several years, saved enough money and got a scholarship to go to college. On page 177 it states “Braverman finally was going to college with help from a town

This paper will focus on the Statue of Dionysos leaning on a female figure. Also known as the Hope Dionysos. The statue is displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art and is located on the first floor Roman and Greek art chamber. Upon entering this sector, you will notice a grand statue that catches your eyes and captivates you as it welcomes you in gracefully. The exhibition is set up in the back center of the room, and is noticeable due to the largeness in scale and the enigmatic yet calming disposition the statue portrays. My first impression of the sculpture was how detailed and realistic the statue is. Since the statue was so defined you would be able to identify what he was wearing and how his body was shaped to how long his hair was during this time period. I was profoundly intrigued by how peaceful the statue of Dionysos embodied and found myself coming back to it and looking in awe. In curiosity, I would choose this statue for my assignment because I wanted to learn more about the history of the Hope Dionysos. In this essay I will be describing my formal analysis of the artwork, the subject matter behind it, the artist and the historical content of the statue of Dionysos.
Every event changes you even in the slightest way, on the other hand, changes are much more noticeable when there’s a bigger journey. In Joan Bauer’s, Hope Was Here, Hope and her aunt Addie, who is also her legal guardian, move to wisconsin after a disaster at their old diner. They work for a man named GT at the Welcome Stairways diner. GT soon becomes mayor but the leukemia got worse, and by the end, he passes away. Hope, the protagonist, changed from the beginning because now, she has a better appreciation for people around her and she’s overall stronger and kinder, not that she wasn’t kind before.
In the novel, “A Hope in the Unseen” written by Ron Suskind explains the journey of Cedric Jennings from the Inner City to the Ivy League. As a means of survival, having had to attend a high school in one of Washington, D.C’s most dangerous neighborhoods. Cedric Jennings has had to isolate himself from his peers so “he could stay on course and keep his sanity”(Suskind 293) in order to leave the neighborhood behind and pursue his dream of attending an Ivy League school. When he does reach his dream of attending Brown University, he still holds the idea that isolation is the key of survival. He still holds the idea that their is a battle between himself and his peers based on their different values or academic successes. As a result, conflicts erupts by the fact Cedric won't give up his past and live toward the future or the now. Eventually he realizes that “being alone doesn’t seem to be working”(Suskind 293) anymore.

The Theme of Hope in To Kill a Mockingbird And Scarlet Ibis Hope saves people. People who have hope and faith are often people who succeed in life and do well. Desmond Tutu has hope for the world when he says “Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all the darkness.” (Tiny Buddha) In the story to Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Scout shows hope in Boo Radley by continuing to grow closer to him and befriend him.
To have hope is to be able to see the light amid the darkness. This is a notion shown in Ned Vizzini’s “It’s Kind of a Funny Story”. The protagonist is a teenage boy named Craig, who struggles with depression. One night, Craig checks himself into a hospital because of his suicidal thoughts. He then gets placed in the adult psychiatric ward called Six North. The novel “It’s Kind of a Funny Story” demonstrates that it is crucial to remain positive during hard times as there will be better days, with the usage of conflicts and characters. This is important because everyone undergoes hardships at some point in their life and must be able to prevail.
As shown on the cover page, I did my project on Hope Was Here by Joan Bauer, which was published in 2000, and Say Goodnight, Gracie by Julie Reece Deaver, which was published in 1988. Hope Was Here is about a 16 year old girl, who is being raised by her Aunt Addie, who is a chef. Her mom, Deena deemed hereself unfit to take care of Tulip, who later changed her name to Hope as soon as she turned 12. Hope is a teenage waitress, and her Aunt Addie and she have moved around a lot. The story starts with Addie and Hope just arrived in the small rural town of Mulhoney, Wisconsin, from their last place of employment in New York. Hope spends the summer waitressing at the Welcome Stairways Diner, and Addie and her end up being involved the diner’s owner, who is recovering from leukemia, G.T. Stoops’ political campaign to clean up corruption in the town. Along the way, Addie and Hope both find love, and Hope finds the father figure she has so desperately wanted. While Say Goodnight, Gracie is about a 17-year-old girl, named Morgan Hackett dealing with her best friend, Jimmy’s death. Jimmy and Morgan have known each other their entire lives, and they spend almost all of their free time with each other. Their relationship left little room in their lives for other friends. When Jimmy dies, Morgan settles in a deep depression. She now wonders how she
Hope in Krik Krak Psalm 30:5, “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” A powerful scripture to some, a meaningful quote to others, but most importantly, it is a message that helps tie together the overall purpose or mood that the reader may interpret while reading this book. In the book, Krik Krak, a series of short stories, the author Edwidge Danticat utilizes juxtaposition to create characters with a positive mindset during the worst case scenarios that in return create a sense of hope throughout the book. Every story had a character that went through tests and trials and managed to still have hope, but only a couple stood out.
When I found out that Hope wasn't the main characters birth name, I was very surprised. From the very beginning of the story, you could tell she was a Hope and definitely not a Tulip. Hope's name was a great fit for her, not only because of the things she overcame, but also because of the way she held herself through those tough times. Her aura screamed hope. Hope held her head high through the worst times in her life, such as when Gleason Beal betrayed her and took off with all of her and Addie's money. Another rough spot in her life was not having a mom or dad. Hope had met her mom, Deena, a couple times, but she had no idea who her dad was. Throughout the book, she remained hopeful that her dad would come and swoop her off her feet and fix
Hope, by definition means to look forward to something with reasonable desire and confidence. Hope also means a person or thing in which expectations are centered. When discussing the word hope, one must consider the core values by which the word works around. You could hope for financial success, world peace, or simply hope for some good out of your day. In 2006, Barack Obama wrote the political biography The Audacity of Hope to outline his core political and spiritual beliefs, as well as his opinions on different aspects of American culture. The Illinois senator divided the book into nine chapters, each concentrating on both his own and the United States’ successes and failures in local and state politics. While revealing great
POTENTIAL SPOILER ALERT: Typically, viewers can count on my reviews being spoiler-free, but there is a chance that I may reveal something you didn't know or hadn't heard. However, if you are dying to know what may or may not be included in the upcoming premiere, read on. But know you have been warned.
This shows that even though she didn't have a dad, she overcame it by living life happily. Clearly, even when the struggles get hard there is always a way to overcome is a life lesson developed through the use of conflict in Forgotten.
The Men for Hope Celebrity Weekend Extravaganza took place at Chrysler Hall on September 17, 2017. The night was full of live entertainment. The lineup for the evening events consisted of acts performed by Doug E. Fresh, Stokley Williams of Mint Condition and Terry Ellis, Cindy Herron and Rhona Bennett of En Vogue. In addition to this being my first time that I have seen a performance by any of these artists on stage, it was also my first time attending a performance at Chrysler Hall.
