Character Analysis of Jack in 'Lord of the Flies'

In the beginning of the novel, Ralph was elected as the leader and Jack was jealous because he lost in the election. Thinking of it, he pushes his boundaries by hunting. The first time he tried he was unable to kill but then it became his main interest. It made him begin to build the urge to kill other creatures. Only moments later, Jack makes his first kill. “There were lashings of blood,” said Jack,laughing and shuddering, “you should have seen it!” (page 69) this shows the first step Jack developing to savagery which losses his innocence. As the story goes on, Jack creates a tribe like dictatorship that made the boys uncivilized. This leads to the cruelty of Jack which clearly states that the presentation of both protagonist and antagonist leads differently. Jack successfully ruled the boys. He punished the boys with is evil and good purposes. This made them become more and more violent. Since they became violent, an incident happen, and that was they killed Simon. “The beast struggled forward, broke the ring and fell over the steep edge of the rock to the sand by the water. The isolation that comes with crashing on a deserted island affects all the characters, seen most dramatically through Jack. Being brought into this setting transforms the civilized choir leader into a savage hunter and murderer who’s given into his inner demons. When the boys first crash land onto the island, they were proper English schoolboys. Due to the separation from society, however, the boys start to regress, giving in to their more animalistic instincts. Jack starts off as the ‘‘chapter chorister and head boy’” who tries to take leadership of the tribe the boys form; he fails to do so, turning him away from order and reason (Golding 22). He neglects his duties and turns his attention to hunting the native pigs, prompting him to let the fire, their gateway back to society, go out; this pits Ralph against Jack, who represent civilization and savagery

Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding, has four very important dynamic characters. A dynamic character is a character that develops and grows during the course of the story. Ralph, Jack, Piggy, and Simon are four dynamic characters in Lord of the Flies that adapt to their new lifestyles in different ways. Jack is a very important dynamic character in Lord of the Flies because he goes through the most changes during the novel. While on the island, Jack has many life experiences that change him forever. Jack never thought he would live his life the way he is living his life in the island. Jack’s authoritative figure, savage-like/instinctual behavior, and violence are three qualities that make Jack a dynamic character.

Jack is one of the strong examples that humans can be bad. He enjoys killing pigs, as he states “ ‘There were lashings of blood,’ said Jack, laughing and shuddering, ‘you should have seen it!’ ” (Golding 69). This quote shows that there is evil in Jack and it will be difficult for him to go back to his old nice self. He does not think about getting rescued, he wants to shed more blood. Another quote that proves humans can be evil is, “ ‘You would, would you? Fatty!’ … Jack smacked Piggy’s head” (Golding 71). This shows that Jack is very savage and is willing to hurt anyone. He wants to take control of the kids and become leader. He helps bring meat for the boys, but his brutal side will get him

A good leader is one who knows how to lead with control and has strong leader characteristics. In the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding, some readers support the fact that Jack was a better leader than Ralph, but others feel that Ralph was the better leader. Although many supporters feel that Ralph is the best leader, it is evident that Jack is the better leader because he can effortlessly control the group on the island.

Jack and his tribe show the true meaning of savagery creeping in when the rules of society are forgotten. Ever since the boys arrived on the island, Jack has wanted to be the only one in control. When the boys voted for Ralph over Jack he became angry. The boys separated, some decided to become hunters and the others desired rescue. Jack quotes “ who will join my tribe”, so now Jack does have the power he’s been wanting but only to the savages. Jack becomes obsessed with the thrill of killing pigs that he takes his killings to another level. Golding uses zoomorphism to describe jack and the people in his tribe; “Jack began to dance and his laughter became bloodthirsty snarling.” Golding would use this literary device to show the ptrue animals the savages are. The boys chant “‘kill the pig. Cut her throat. Bash her in’”, this indirectly shows the savagery that the boys have developed since stranded in an environment where there is no authority. After Jack achieves killing pigs he becomes even more bloodlust. Jack and the boys kill Simon with no couth then Jack allows Roger, another savage, kill Piggy. After the murders they all act like nothing has happened. Jack doesn’t show pure savagery because he uses a clay mask when he hunts, which hides his true personality. Jack gets mad at Ralph. Because he blamed by Ralph and he is always a lot of set up. This makes her get bored and go away from Ralph. Jack felt that he more deserves to be a leader. Then, this separate do not make him doubt at all. It is because Jack has an ability of hunting to survive on the island. In addition, there are other kids who follow him and accompanied him to keep each other. it make him sure for what he has decided. Over the summer we all read the book Lord of the Flies by William Golding and had to put of with the one called Jack. In nearly every book there is a so called villain or bad guy to make the story more interesting and eventful, and Jack is just that character. There are many words to describe jack but my word is superior. over all. Throughout the story you start to understand Jacks’s horrid personality and actions which leaves me to believe the best word to describe jack is ¨wicked¨.

Throughout the novel of Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the way Jack is described changes. Not only how other characters view him but also the way he is described throughout the book. At his first appearance he is described as tall thin and bony with red hair, that his face is ugly and freckled. His blue eyes looked like they were ready to turn into anger. The other characters progressively start to see him as evil and violent as he craves to become leader over Ralph. His main conflict is believing that he deserves to be in charge and Ralph does not. Killing turns into a nature although he struggled at the beginning. Jack becomes viewed as an animal as he becomes so obsessed with being leader, when he struggles to kill the pig it shows his true humanity.

Jack’s hunters show the “darkness of man's heart” and the evil of killing when they start to brutally kill pigs and enjoy it. When the hunters successfully kill their first pig, they start to celebrate in a not so sane way. They start chanting “Kill the pig, cut her throat, spill her blood”(69). By the hunters chanting this, it shows that they enjoyed killing the pig. Killing the pig was a necessary task for obtaining food but it was turned into a form of bloody enjoyment. Later when Jack and his group stumble across another pig, they kill it in a not so quick and efficient way. They all jump the pig and “Roger ran round the heap, prodding with his spear wherever pig flesh appeared”(135). Jack helps out by repeatedly stabbing down on it with

Jack Merridew is a character in Lord of the Flies who always fights against Ralph about who should be in charge. Jack is described as a tall, thin, ugly boy with light blue eyes that seem to turn angry at any moment. When Ralph first sees Jack, he also notices a group of choir boys behind him. Jack is the leader of the choir, and enjoys being in control. If he is not in control, he relentlessly tries to become the figure in power. Jack discredits the power of the conch and lies about Ralph so the children will not want him as leader. “‘The conch doesn’t count on top of the mountain,’” (Golding 42). The accused, Jack Merridew, is being charged with 2nd degree murder, armed criminal action, and endangering the welfare of a child, due to his participation in the murder of Simon, brandishment of spears, and lack of regard for the other children on the island, respectively.

Jack, negatively portrayed in comparison to Ralph, tempts the boys with an array of forbidden treats, indulging their most violent, suppressed desires in an attempt to lull them away from the security of Ralph. In a sense, Jack is negatively compared to Ralph throughout the novel, and is often portrayed as confused and violent, very aware of the evil inside of him: “The real problem that arises among the boys involves their own inner nature…” (Johnston 2). When his plan fails, Jack feels as though his seat of power is threatened and therefore resorts to terrorizing, threatening and essentially forcing the boys to join him and align themselves against Ralph, alienating them from their former, comfortable life-style and thus making what they once failed to appreciate all the more desirable.
