Walking down the street, no one will ever suspect somebody is not whom they see. Matteo Alacrán was just a little boy when he found out who he really was. Since then, his life has never been the same. The House of the Scorpion, published by Nancy Farmer in 2002, follows Matteo as he learns about his life’s purpose and how he adapts to the changes around him. Set in the future where hovercrafts and cloning is possible, the book is based on a character who creates clones to live longer passed his expiration date. Every clone has a serum which dulls the brain injected into them. Matteo, Matt for short, never had the injection. His birth was to not bring a life into the world, but who Matt turned out to be was a new life in the world. Matt’s existence and all that he is drive story, but actions have a big influence as well. All actions have consequences whether good or bad, in this case, Matt does leads from one thing to another. The start, after doing the same thing in school every day, not snapping talked for the first time in a long while with a hatred towards his new teacher and how he is a “bad clone” (Farmer 73). After Mattix version, he started to talk more more where kept learning more. This led to being mean to María and stealing her dog; which later dies and Matt is blamed for the death. Additionally, after El Patrón entered the hospital for being sick, Matt was being hunted down to go and help him. Sadly, Matt knew what this meant, that he was going to be used as parts to keep El Patrón alive. When Matt relieved this, he decided to run away with María, not to the “oasis”, but to “dadas hovercraft” so they can go an live at María’s forever (Farmer 218). Unfortunately, his plan fails and is captured. He is then told to be executed, but Tam Lin could never do that so he let Matt go. Matt arrived at an orphanage where he talked back to the keepers and was given the name “aristocrat”, then the other boys began to respect him saying he has more “nerve than a herd of bulls” (Farmer 275). Since his actions to talk back, Matt gained new friends
