Characteristics Of A Resilient Business Organization

The word “resilience” comes from the latin world “salire”, which means to spring up and the word “resilire” which means to spring back as well as “resilo” which means the ability to rebound or jump back (Resnick, Lisa, and Gwyther, 2011; Dalziell and McManus, 2004; Pflanz and Lewis, 2012; Rochas, Kuznecova and Romagnoli, 2014).
A theoretical model is presented identifying the pertinent features that characterize a resilient business organization. Drawing on the systems theory literature, a business is firstly characterized in terms of its technical, social and economic sub-systems. Secondly, the kinds of disruptions business system might need to guard against are identified according to local, national and global spheres of influence. Thirdly, that resilient business system must attend to the goals of redundancy, requisite variety and resources. Finally, when these attributes (sub-systems, spheres of influence goals) are connected certain business artifacts become evident as critical to enabling organizational resilience.
Resilience is seen as an organizational capability, to anticipate key events from emerging trends, constantly adapt to change and rapidly bounce back from disaster (Marcos, 2008). Resilient organizations always strive to be prepared for the best, but also for the worst where organizational learning inward and outward is nurtured and encouraged.
