Charles Manson is well known around the world for the infamous murders he orchestrated throughout the 1960’s. When hearing the name “Manson,” two words that immediately come to mind are crazy and murders. I believe Manson is insane, and should be in jail for life. Although he did not personally commit murders, he had other people that trusted him, do it for him. Manson manipulated people all around him and could get people to murder whenever he asked them to. There is a huge amount of history and background that comes up when talking about Manson. I have always been very interested in the topic of murders, and when I got the chance to pick Charles Manson as the topic of my research paper, I was eager to start. Since he had no type of guardian or authority, he stopped going to school and began getting into a great amount of legal trouble. According to the book, The Psychology of Criminal Conduct:
Criminal behavior has been a long-term interest within psychology as a whole. In view of the great variety of interests and orientations within general human psychology, however, a psychological analysis of criminal behavior is multifaceted (Andrews 10).
This means the analysis of criminal behavior has been around for many years. Researchers and psychologists are constantly trying to find out what is going on in the criminal mind and how serial killers rationalize aspects in their mind. He began his crime sprees, mostly with small crimes like burglary and stealing cars. Unlike most children his age, Manson was already showing signs of delinquent behavior. Bravin states that Manson was arrested around the age of thirteen and was sent to a detention center in Plainfield, Indiana, where he was raped by another inmate. It was reported that, throughout Manson’s time in confinement, he would burn himself with cigarettes and put needles in himself to build up his pain tolerance (Bravin 49). He was in the news recently, for his engagement, while still in prison, to his 26 year old fiancé, Afton Elaine “Star” Burton. This recent engagement has brought up events earlier in his life, including relationships with much younger women in the “family,” showing his power (Rothman). From this information, I am certain that Manson is still crazy and truly believes he rules the world. I believe it is for the good of everyone that Manson is in prison for life and will not see be able to walk the streets ever again. Innocent lives, including a pregnant woman’s were taken because of his decisions and from the people he manipulated.
