Chevrolet Media Assessment The media plays a critical role in American societal structure. Not only does the media attempt to inform the populous of current affairs, as the fourth estate, the media serves as a form of checks and balances on the political spectrum. It is worthy to note, the role media is given is a challenging one. In general, the media is expected to inform the public of any information which is pertinent or useful to the populous. However, defining exactly what topics, stories, or events are the most critical to divulge to the public at large, also has the adverse affect of shaping the social climate. Of the six articles examined in relation to Chevy, clear agenda setting is found in few. However, after reviewing the various articles it is clear what agenda is most likely to be pushed when an agenda is pushed, is corporate responsibility. Reputational risk. The article covered by The Chicago Tribune, poses great repetitional risk to Chevy, while displaying agenda setting by the news source. The article covers a small strike, involving only nine employee, at Al Piemonte Chevrolet in East Dundee (Danahey, 2015). However, the article is written and formatted in a way which seems to make the story bigger news than it may actually be. The strike incident happened at a local Chevy dealership, which may not reflect on the feelings or practices of Chevy as a whole. The article does not contain any direct statement from Chevy regarding the situation, yet does contain quotes from the employees, as well as a labor board

The effects media has on people are unknown but are becoming more evident as media is expanding. In a world of instant media, people do not realize how much non-truths they are being fed daily. Whether it be a popup article on Facebook or the current news story on the evening news, it is hard to discern fact from fiction. Media is also influencing day-to-day life whether it be on what we buy, which way to take to work, where the bad neighborhood is. Media’s goal is not to always tell the truth sometimes its goal to make the population think the way media wants them to think. Once Jim Morrison said that whoever controls the media controls the mind. This shows that he had recognized the immense power and influence that the media has in our day to day lives. The media plays a very important role in the society as the source of information for every person. Hence, it is very hard for the modern society to live without the media. As a result of the media being the major source of information in our society, it is an undeniable fact the media shapes people’s opinions, attitudes and actions on particular issues (Czopp & Monteith, 2006).
For the last 100 years, Chevrolet has prided itself and strived to maintain the core values of the company and vision of Louis Chevrolet through “performance, durability and value.” (Chevrolet, 2015) Chevrolet, Chevy, has branded itself as a key component of American history and cultures, just as American as apple pie and baseball. (GM Buys Chevrolet, 2015) Chevy remains patriotic and All-American through taglines like, “America’s Best Seller” and “Chevy Runs Deep”, a tagline referring to the American Revolution. (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014, p.412) American sporting events are also locations of product branding and marketing for the automotive company.
Using Media today has become a way of life for people all across the world. It is a way for people to stay informed on current events, form opinions on hot topics, as well as determine their political affiliation. Because the media has become such an influential tool, it is important to eliminate bias in order to allow people to develop their individual opinions and become educated members of today’s society. By creating more diversity in journalism, having a more open mind about certain topics, and forming a new mold of media coverage, Americans can create an unbiased source of media that will encourage a more independent and intelligent society.
U.S. adults spend, on average, over 10 hours everyday consuming media. Media is everywhere around us, whether it is the internet, television, newspapers, or even the ads that you see outside everyday. Americans are surrounded by media and it is practically impossible to avoid media for the average American. For the most part, we look towards media to make sense of the senseless, and to show us what the difference is between the lies and the truth. Many Americans feel as if the media would never skew from the complete and utter truth. But, that is a false assumption, the media, like everyone else has an opinion on topics and many times they use their great voices to make the consumers develop the same opinion.
There is no question, especially in the light of the rear view mirror of the car industry in the last decade, that any book written by an ex-executive the industry will have some revisionist history. In this regard Lutz did not disappoint, and from a self-described product guy, he seems to lay out the reasons for the incredible collapse of his industry everywhere else except at his feet. For some reason the forces that commandeered Detroit, and to a larger extent the car industry as a whole, were in part because myopic leadership was out of tune with the wants and needs of the consumer. This accusation of tone-deafness is certainly nothing new for many industries devastated by the Great Recession.
Think of it this way, all of the debt, problems, and poor choices made by the notoriously distinguished old GM were put on a boat (Motors Liquidation, Inc.) and given a viking burial (code 363 liquidated (sold in parts for as much profit as possible)) while every asset went to a new company convolutedly called General Motors. Basically, New GM made out like a bandit.
Since the United States of America were first established, the news media has had a large and important role in influencing the people. Even during the American Revolution, the press helped to shape the public opinion in favor of the patriotic agenda through newspapers and pamphlets. In the Early Republic, Broadsides became popular with the people and, in the Jacksonian Era, a more voters inclusive press, the “penny press”, and the Associated Press, using a new technology known as the telegraph, rose in popularity. But, more events along the way saw to the growth of the news media as we know it today.
The media, a powerful source of information but what are the affects? While the media is seen by many as a vital source of information offered through a variety of different outlets, the theoretical underlining affects of the media demonstrates how stories from within it can influence society. The imprtance of not only recongnizing but understanding the media’s affects remains a vital priority in all forms of information today in how it is received and interpretated by different audiences. The level of effect of the media however, has been disputed heavingly, as with different forms of media such as online have developed a different affect for the mass media consumer. There are few company names that are associated with Americana more than Chevrolet. From its initial beginnings in 1911, till today, Chevrolet has produced a wide variety of makes and models to meet customers’ expectations and demands. From sporty compact cars to heavy duty pickup trucks, the Chevy brand is known throughout the world. By releasing a wide variety of styles and models, Chevrolet manages to accommodate many different types of car buyers. Cars sold under the Chevy brand name automatically start with certain levels of excellence and popularity. That is one reason why parent company GM produces a wide variety of vehicles under the Chevrolet brand (Ferrell & Hartline, 2014).
The media also influences how the public perceives issues. The placement of political issues during news coverage influences the importance of political issues on society. The ranking of media issues and society’s ranking suggest that the media influence the public (Weaver, 1996). The importance of an issue may rests on its time slot, sequence in the news story, or in the advertisement for the news.
Unfortunately, the same issues that existed with the overall governance existed here. The company may have been acting as an exemplary corporate citizen, but with no overall strategy and minimal communication, there was no consistency or coordination, and the company was not getting the public relations benefits that they might have otherwise gained (Veleva, 2010).
Thousands of our nation's men and women were fighting for their country, yet the media limited the amount of information that they chose to pass on to the public. Each day the media is faced with the choice of making decisions of what news to pass on, when that news could make a significant difference in someone's life, or in the fate of our nation.
