Approximately 45% of my life consisted of “spanking” or “punishment”. In today’s society, those actions are now considered child abuse and mistreatment. In 2014, state agencies identified an estimated 1,580 children who died as a result of abuse and neglect between four and five children a day (https://www.childhelp.org). Physical child abuse is one of the most common abuses we see today, but child abuse can also be emotional, sexual, or even neglect towards the child. Child abuse or mistreatment can cause emotional distress, use of drugs and alcohol, and changes in behavior from the child.
Have you ever been bullied or picked on and felt down or absent from society? These same outcomes happen through child abuse. Children who experience maltreatment,
When you’re a kid you should still have so much hope because you have not seen the tragedies in the world. Imagine just for a second that before you were even five, you had to take care of yourself. As a toddler you felt unloved and neglected. Each year 5.5 million children experience this feeling, not just for a second, but throughout their childhood. Neglect is child abuse, as well as physical abuse, sexual abuse, and emotional abuse. Child abuse is awful because it causes the child to feel worthless, to lose trust, and to have serious psychological problems early on in life.
Child abuse can be a very touchy subject. Some say parents do it because they want their child to listen and follow their rules. Others say that they would never hurt a person because it can cause physical and mental problems that could last a lifetime. With this debate you will see the critics and supporters side of what they think about abuse and what it can do. Most parents who abuse their child don’t realize that its abuse. They believe it’s a different form of discipline that is working to get their child to follow the rules they have set. Child Abuse supporters and critics have their reasons why they agree and disagree with it and what it can do later in their child's life.
The studies on children with risk behaviors were done because the increasing number of children being place in foster care due to maltreatment. This is how the study was done to get a up to date examined on youth that had been though protective services and vulnerability factors in foster care. Some individual predicted placing youth in the foster care system would cause an impact in the maltreatment and physical abuse. Maltreatment and physically abuse don’t stop due a child being place in foster care out-of-home care; children that has been in any type of Truman will need some kind of counsel services.
Abuse is something that has been happening for a while now and seems to be a recurring problem. People are not aware of this problem because they do not step up and speak up for themselves. In almost every situation the victims wish they would have said something sooner but did not. There are many different kinds of abuse, but these are the most common.

Child abuse is a global problem, which unfortunately happens in every society, culture and communities. The term “Child Abuse” refers to intended acts that result in physical or emotional harm to children. Child abuse covers a wide range of behavior from physical assault by parents or other adult caretakers to neglect of child’s basic need. Child abuse is a social problem that affects millions of children each year, children less than 3 years of age being the most frequent victims. (Edelman & Mandle, 2010)
Children get abused and die everyday of abuse and neglect. In 2005 1,460 died throughout the year of child abuse or neglect. The majority of kids who get abused are mostly 3 years or younger (77 percent ). The United States has one of the worst records, losing on average of 3-7 kids everyday to child abuse or neglect. Throughout the year there are referrals to the state child protective services that involve 6.6 million children, and about 3.2 million of the children are subject to an investigated report. Being abused as a kid can damage the kid for life, child abuse needs to stop.
Physical Abuse and Neglect on children research has shown the relationship between the types of child abuse. Promotion of children’s physical and mental health has become a cornerstone of family policy, as reflected in Sweden (7).
“Whoever inquires about our childhood wants to know something about our soul.” I chose to start with this quote from Alice Miller’s book because I think it epitomizes the impact a childhood has on an individual later in their life. Childhood is a practice run for adulthood in some ways, in that we learn how to behave in certain situations and we learn about human nature and how to deal with adverse situations by developing coping mechanisms. We are effectively building a resilient (or non-resilient as it may turn out) soul while we are children. We learn to trust others, or we don’t. We learn how to love and how to share ourselves; or not.
Child abuse is a serious social issue that needs awareness. Two major forms abuse are sexual and physical. Verbal abuse is a form of abuse however it is hard to prove. Physical abuse is when an adult intentionally or unintentionally inflicting or harms a child. Using force such as kicking, extension cords, and boxing the child with objects as a form of discipline. Parents must be mindful of the methods that they use for discipline. Also, Parents should not discipline their child when they are angry this is a recipe for disaster. Lately, parents have been posting videos on social media of them disciplining their child. In response to the increase of child abuse cases laws have been made to distinguish abuse from spanking.
People are appalled when they hear about a child who died at the hands of their parents, yet they turn a blind eye to the signs leading up to their death. In today's society there are currently quite a few flaws with how the safety and protection of children is handled. For far too many children, their physical abuse goes unreported due to factors such as wanting to avoid getting involved, while emotional abuse goes unnoticed. Studies show that currently three times as many children are abused than are reported to CPS agencies (“Child Abuse and Neglect Statistics”). CPS stands for child protective services and is an American organization responsible for investigating the abuse of minors, but they are unable to investigate when abuse is not
Throughout history, children have been subjected to extensive abuse and neglect including but not limited to physical, sexual and psychological abuse and neglect alongside being provided with little to no rights. To combat this, individual states within our nation initiated Child Abuse reporting laws starting in 1963 which quickly spread throughout the nation. However, these laws oftentimes failed to adequately address and treat the extensive instances of child abuse and neglect due to lack of support, funding and recognition. It was not until a full decade later that the federal government enacted legislature and provided federal funds to support and assist states in their ongoing fight against child abuse which provided more adequate
Even later in life as these children grew into young adults the lasting effects of physical punishment could still be seen. The association of love with violence that is learned through corporal punishment causes antisocial and violent behaviour later in life (Straus, 1994; Greven, 1991; Flynn, 1999). Children and spouses of individuals who were spanked have a much higher risk of being battered (Straus, 1994). According to a 1985 National Family Violence Survey published by Murray Straus, the risk of drug and alcohol abuse is also much higher in the population of children whose parents spanked them. The use of drugs and alcohol may create an escape for those individuals looking for a diversion from their traumatic memories of perceived rejection as children (Straus 1994). A child who is spanked not only absorbs the blows, but the message the blows convey, “You’re worthless, I reject you!”
Friday night is his favorite night of the week. After a long week at school he looks forward to spending time with his mom, dad, and siblings. He even plans a movie night for everyone. But when he gets home his dad is gone, and his mom has locked herself in the bathroom to cry. When, dad finally comes home he smells of liquor and finds any excuse to pick a fight with mom. What should have been a fun-filled night has turned into the kids hiding in their bedroom, and their mom wishing that the next blow to the face would just kill her. For some unfortunate children, this is a reality. Every night is a guessing game. Will dad be too drunk to help me with my homework? Will mom even come home tonight? Alcoholism is a disease that often goes ignored
Child abuse can be as simple as one’s parents neglecting them, by not feeding them or even not showing them enough affection. Child abuse happens more often than many would think. “Each year throughout the United States, over three million children are reported to state child protective services
